GoodKnightDJ 12-14-2007, 02:58 PM There are only a few people in this world that I care about what they think of me: my wife, my boss at the day job, and my current client and I am not really sure if I even care about the last two.
Not caring is the ultimate confidence builder. It means that you can walk into any room, any group, or any situation and simply take charge; become the alpha.
Now, I am not saying act like a complete idiot. But I am saying act like the situation requires; that is, if being formal is required, then be formal, and so on.
For example, your client has told you that it is a formal event and a tux is required. You get there and you are overdressed because most people are in jeans or business casual. Don't feel out of place because it throws you off. Run with it. Make jokes about it. But don't agonize over it.
When you are DJing, be the alpha.
patrickrlewis 12-14-2007, 03:20 PM Does anyone really need my answer on this one? hahaha
flame 12-14-2007, 04:00 PM is there any other way???..when you ARE the entertainment, just do it or find other career options...
SoftJock Rick 12-14-2007, 05:29 PM Do you care what everybody thinks of you?

DJ Gray 12-14-2007, 06:20 PM I think we all care what people we care for think of us,.................. don't we?
Will I change who I am to please others, ..........not at my stage in life.......Do I care Yes, am I concerned...NO...
"It Is What It Is"...........
SoftJock Rick 12-14-2007, 06:25 PM rick...absolutely love your sarcastic humour....are you irish by any chance???
Nah, half Italian, half Dutch :)
But, I can hold my own in the pub with the Micks (which may explain it) :sqlaugh:
GoodKnightDJ 12-14-2007, 06:39 PM But caring about what they are thinking or at least caring about what we think they are thinking can get in the way of confidence, particularly if you are the MC.
The simple way to overcome this is to become the alpha. Every group has one and group dynamics or social engineering can determine who the alpha is. Some group alphas are easy to spot; bosses, coordinators, anyone that is liked by the group that can maintain social control over it.
If you are DJing an event, being the alpha can make your job much more easy. Now, I am not saying be an idiot, bossy or a pr*ck. Just go in with the confidence that you are in charge but in a friendly way.
flame 12-14-2007, 06:52 PM well, we MICKS enjoy the company....even if you ARE a mixed breed!!!have-a-pint, lad??

Excellent Post!!......
From a work standpoint, in really any job, that you deal with the public, taking the "alpha" approach, is preferred provided you don't "monopolize" the situation or conversation.
Most controlling/alpha personalities can be in the "Alpha" role and those being controlled/manipulated, have no idea that they are being..........controlled/manipulated..! That's where it becomes an Art. Most of your very successful sales people have this "natural" ability
I only care what the Hiring Party thinks of me. They are the ones who write the reviews online!

I believe that's an oxymoron Jim
Sorry, I was doing the alpha slide :)
Scott Hanna 12-14-2007, 07:55 PM I think we can be very confident in what we do and still care what people think.
Caring about what people think doesn't mean you have to keep changing everything you do to please everyone.
When at a show, If the event calls for an "alpha", I'll be glad to do it. But if the client feels they want to do it, I'll be glad to follow to give them the event they want. If something they want along the way could affect their party negatively, I'll let them know.
I'm very confident in what i do. If a client says i want this list of songs played in this exact order, I'm confident the party will be a dud. I'm also confident that most people will think the DJ is a dud. I'm very confident that the guests at that party will not be eager to hire us for their event. So, i obviously care about what those people think.
I say you SHOULD care about what others think of you. At the same time, you should care what you think of yourself.
WaydeWest 12-14-2007, 09:18 PM I agree completely...unless you don't think I should.
Do these pants make me look fat?
Jon Tuck 12-14-2007, 09:38 PM Thats the stance I take in my Sales meetings but I attempt at all cost to plant the idea as if it was their own. Works well.
''You want your client to feel they like you right?''
