DJ Screen?

I just found this promo video for DJ Screens on YouTube and thought it looked cool.

Anyone ever use one? The $250 price tag seems steep for a piece of spandex cloth (when I work in the NYC fashion district)... do you think you can make the same with some fabric from one of the local wholesalers?

What could it cost to try? Just add a few grommets.....

and of course make certain it fits minimum fire safety standards. Fire retardant code. Make sure you super soak it with the solution.

DJ Scottie has one like it I think. Someone here does Im sure of it. Briar ? Kevin Nichols? I forget.

I used to use a 6' X 6' spandex screen mounted to the top of my old truss a couple years ago. It was fine to get started with video projection but looks a little amature in hindsight. The video doesn't fill the whole spandex space and when streched out it isnt a symmetrical shape. Don't get me wrong it's a cheap way to get started with video, but in my mind a nice da-light fastfold is the way to go for the long term.

I was more thinking of projecting a vue 2 or revo type led fixture then video.

It would make a great backdrop to my facade and maybe give an easy basic presentation surface for corporate holiday parties where front projection would be fine.

Yeah, I like the idea of using them for backdrops and don't get me wrong they're cool for video too I'm just super happy with my fastfolds...rolling case and all that they come in. Those screens are also great for sillouette (sp?) screens a par or two behind them and let the JH or HS kids (heck even the corporate folks) cast thier funky shadows on that bad boy.

They are fine for things like school dances or anything video at a youth event.

I feel embarrassed for the guys I see trying to use them at corporate events. Strung on trusses or between poles with no dress kit - it's just butt-ugly.

Yes, we made our own... spandex from a store.

Now that being said.... my wife did all of the work, and she spent a fair amount of time sewing the edging onto the spandex.. it isn’t the easiest fabric to work with.

I use mine for school events only, I agree for corporate, they wouldn’t have the right look.
here is a quick promo video from a Halloween dance recently

Check out the Bret Michaels Concert I recently did video at, I posted a thread in the big show not to long ago. They used a 12' by 12' span of custom made white spandex. The Martin Mac Washes were used to create a collage of lighting goodness upon it.

Agreed.
Truthfully,I think it looks like crap.
Yeah it may be strong now, but I'd bet after a series of gigs eventually it's gonna start ripping.

Why not invest into something that looks better than a fat woman's slip stretched between 2 tripod stands?

As for the Da-Lite fast fold screens, their dress kit prices are not that unreasonable.

I have the spandex screen, but haven't tried it yet. I'm thinking of just using it for JH & HS dances and some weddings. I don't do many corporate parties.

Bill, my goal is to get the screens you've posted. However, I'm a single op and I'm looking for fast setup and tear down.

DJ Scottie I would like to see the Halloween video. The link doesn't work can you put it back up. Thanks!

If you have a person setting up with you I HIGHLY recommend the Dalite fastfolds, they are rock solid and look very professional.

No it's just little old me. (lol)

DJ Scottie, are you using two Spandex screens in that video?

(I'm just starting in video.) How do you run two screens from one source?

I just bought the same screen as the DJSCREEN.com for half the price. WWW.danzian.com scroll to the bottom and they have premdae shapes. I have used it twice and they are fantastic.!!!

Abbey Lane,

I too am a single Op DJ, I have this Da-Lite screen.

I'll bet I can have this one up in 1/4 the time it takes 2 DJs to rig up Aunt Bertha's underwear between 2 tripods.

This Da-lite is sweet for weddings or smaller gigs but for HS dances you will need at least a 7.5 X 10' - but I agree that your professinalism goes up 10 fold when you go from spandex to a Da-lite or something with a frame. Having said that I used to attach two 10 foot conduit pipes to each side of my old truss and suspend a spandex screen above my rig (the projecor was on a tripod behind me) and it worked and looked pretty cool....I was able to upgrade a couple years into that rig and haven' looked back.

I bought the 66" one from Hiredpower - used - for $175 including shipping if I recall.

I agree they're ugly....

I own several of them, and rarely use them at all because of this..

I buy the fabric bulk from Dazian fabrics.. they have an east coast and west office.. they will also sew them for you..

This is where DJscreens gets their screens.. then they tack on $200 and sell it to you..

The bulk fabric is $20 per yard and is 100'' wide...

$60 can get you a 10x10 screen.

the material you want is called Trapeze.

Nice thing about this...if it needs to be higher, you can set it on a banquet table. It does not have big tripod legs.
