Putting up lights?

So being new to all of this I have a dumb question. How do you guys "put up" your lights? I have two spare speaker stands, can they be used with some sort of bar or do they even need a bar? I'm planning to get 2-4 smaller lighting effects thingies to start with. Lighting wasn't even on the radar when I started looking at/for equipment. All I was concentrating on was the mixer, speakers, mics, stands, cables, music etc.

We guys (and gals) attach our lights to either a T- bar single light stand if the show is a small one or doesnt require much, or if the show requires more, we attach them to a trussing system.

I wouldn't use your spare spkr stands for lights.
