jtnichol 12-17-2007, 12:47 PM Well, it may happen to me by friday.
Building a custom computer for myself. Mainly for video and photo processing. (batch photos)
not really a gamer, so I got a pretty cheap card.
I'm scouring around for known compatibility issues and haven't found any so far.
Intel G33TL mother board Micro ATX
Intel Core 2 Quad q6700 2.66 Ghz times 4
8 GB of Ram, DDR2 800, A-data brand
Genuine copy (finally) of Windows Vista Premium
power supply
256 MB Asus PCI Express video card 7300GT
LightScribe DVD Player SATA
Using my regular ATX tower for now and my regular hard drives...maybe get a micro ATX case down the board if my CPU cooler has room....Then a hard drive 10,000 rpm whenever I want to get serious.
Shipped for $842.00
Some off newegg, some of ebay....
I'm hoping its all good to go!
I'm curious about the combination of MOBO, RAM, and Processor will work perfectly or not. From what I've read, the MOBO can be a little tricky with RAM according to some reviews. I doubt my system will really ever use more than 4 GB anyway....
Thoughts?
Travis B 12-17-2007, 12:52 PM JT, I was trying to check the compatibility of the components but I did not find a mother board by that model on intel.com is that a typo? Even google returned no results.
jtnichol 12-17-2007, 12:56 PM I'm sure I screwed that up.....
G33 Chipset for North Bridge
Here's the link:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121315
It was listed on ebay with a part of the model number
G33TL
By the way, Thanks Travis, I knew you'd be interested in this thread.
Read those reviews on Newegg....you'll see what I'm talking about....
I'm all for testing the system out, then selling the board if I think I can do better for around the same price....
I got the MOBO, q6700, and the Vista Premium for $500
jokerswild 12-17-2007, 01:41 PM Oops you bought Intel.... Should've gone AMD my friend...?
All kiding asside sounds like a nice setup...
If your worried about compatability with memory you will need to detail a little more about the memory and mobo you got.
jtnichol 12-17-2007, 02:57 PM Thanks Rob for looking:
Intel DG33TL (http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/DG33TL/index.htm)
Intel Core 2 Quad q6700 (http://www.intel.com/products/processor/core2quad/index.htm?iid=perf_desktop-digoffice+body_core2quad-q6700)
A-Data 2 x 2GB Ram (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211188&Tpk=A-DATA) (I bought 8 GB)
Since my original post, I have learned the only OS that can even see 8GB of Ram is Vista 64. I do plan on upgrading to that once I find out which program I have will run on it.....
Also, this was a good read (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1227706)about OS, Ram etc.
As far as Processors Go, Here's a killer CPU Comparison tool (http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html)using a ton of different benchmarks.
You can choose 2 processors to be compared and highlighted against 60 others or so.
Mine is not listed, but is one step higher than the Q6600.
Choose the Q6600 and run it against any other AMD chip and you can see why Intel is dominating right now. I figure for an extra $80 it will be well worth it. I'm running AMD right now, and am happy, but its an AMD 64 3200+. Compare these two and you will laugh at where I was, and where I'm going.
Q6600
AMD 64 3200+
On the comparison tool I was most interested in the Video encoding and Audio encoding benchmarks....

Very good read... on the 64bit software. One question nags at me... since people are just now starting to support Vista wouldn't it be prudent at this point to go with XP 64bit vs Vista 64bit?
Since I have a AMD 64 X2 Duel Core 4400+ Brisban 65w 2.5ghz and 4gb of Ram... my mobo can handle upto 8gb of ram and I never considered whether or not it would see the 8gb... at all. It does see the 4gb no problem.
Now as for the ram you got... A Data, I probably would return it for G.Skill if you can. I've heard of problems with A.Data before but that may have more to do with "Overclocking Gamers" but I wouldn't risk it... that's why I got the G.Skill instead. See my post on "Geeking Out" if you haven't already.
What benchmark were you using to compare processors?
Just want to compare yours to mine to see who's CPU falic member is bigger... lol
Travis B 12-17-2007, 04:13 PM You may already know this, but for those who don't... Remember the FSB (Front Side Bus) speed has a lot to do with how fast peripherals go! Go for the bigger FSB speeds :)

From what I was reading, and maybe I'm wrong, but the XP 64 bit OS doesn't support more Ram. Either way, I'm not going to do 64 anything until my key programs are re-designed for it. Particularly Photodex products and Adobe Audition. This I just found out today.....
As far as the Ram goes, I'm gonna test it and see. Its kind of like a Vizio TV; If it works fine out of the box, it will be perfect for me. It ain't a sharp. I spent my money on the processor, I doubt I'll send it it. I'm not into Overclocking. I don't think I need to overclock to play Pong. I'm more interested it multitasking and video/photo/audio editing. the G.Skill WOULD HAVE COST ME $125 MORE
Um....Benchmark comparisons, your wang vs. mine.
AMD X2 4400 Brisbane (running and working right now)
VS.
Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 (mine runs a bit faster Q6700 but not on the list, also running away from me from fear I'll do something stupid with it)
Ours our both colored RED on the following links:

My board has 1333FSB.
The chip sais 1066? Is this the same FSB throughput?
I dunno...

From what I've read, the 8 GB can only be seen by Vista 64.
So....I think what I'm gonna do is partition a brand new drive.
One side XP 32 bit
the other Vista 64 bit.
I know there is plenty of dual boot software out there to do this with....
jokerswild 12-17-2007, 04:34 PM Still even though the quad is out doing a dual, which makes sense, I'm still not dissappointed with the comparison we are only talking a 1 minute difference between each in most comparisons... but again we are comparing a quad to a dual.
So, k your your cpu wanker is bigger than my wanker but, I still like mine anyway.

For a more apple to apple comparison i'd do:
One side XP 64
the other Vista 64
According to what I was reading on both that forum you referenced but also some of the comments about vista vs xp 64 on newegg... I'd lean towards XP 64 because they are saying vista is a resource hog.

But if I'm rendering an entire DVd or somthing crazy like that....
The other thing is that most of these tests were done benchmarking one program.
The other 2 cores will be helpful for background programs.
I can honestly say this is the first decent computer I've ever built.....
SO this is my first wanker ever.
jtnichol 12-17-2007, 04:57 PM For a more apple to apple comparison i'd do:
One side XP 64

either way, 32 bit on one partition, 64 on the other
jokerswild 12-17-2007, 04:58 PM hahaha....
Well play with your wanker often... then!:sqerr:
jtnichol 12-19-2007, 11:52 AM Update:
I just found out from Photodex that Prow Show Gold Photo and Video Montage software supports Vista 64!
Thats so sweet. This way I can actually justify having 8GB of ram.
(if I don't burn anything up before booting of course)
I just got my heatsink for my processor in. Its huge and copper. Very cool....
