Wedding tomorrow and no voice

Ruben Mora

I have a wedding tomorrow night and I’m trying to get back my voice. Major head cold since Xmas Eve. What a fun way to spend my vacation. May have to go to plan B if my voice does not make it. Plan B is taking another DJ with me to do the vocals while I handle the music.

I only miss two events in the past 26 years. How many of us had to use a backup plan because we were sick?

Kirby, what are you doing tomorrow?

Hey Ruben,

Here's a little trick, if you can't find somebody.

Literally snort a small line of black pepper about a half hour before you need to speak. You will spend the next 20 minutes blowing your nose, but it will clear the nasal passages out pretty good, and yer voice should be somewhat close to normal.

It only lasts for a bit, but it does work.

Rick,

You want me to snort what? You are kidding? What no home remedies that involve alcohol?

SoftJock Rick
12-27-2007, 05:23 PM
Serious, it works Ruben!

I've done it many times. It only works for so long though, and ya have to blow yer nose a lot during the process.

I wish there was alcohol involved, but pepper is a cool remedy for certain things, voice and breathing being my two favorites

I once snorted Tequila at the Airmans Club Okinawa. Boy did it burn but it too cleaned out the sinuses.

Can't say I've ever tried that one Jon, but maybe one day...

I love pepper though, as I have allergies that annoy the heck out of me, and it works much better than the crazy drugs on the market.

Ya just have to get used to the sneezing, and blowing yer nose for 20 minutes, then yer good for a couple hours (YMMV), and other than that, there's no side effects :)

You will make it thru your gig.

I've had this scare a few times before and it always went away, in time for the big performance.

(For the last 10 years, flu shots have reduced the number of head colds to almost zero, and this laryngitis problem hasn't flared up in a long time)

I've been performing in your area over two decades and I've never missed a gig. http://www.yelp.com/c/sacramento/arts

Hey Ruben, my Emcee services are available for only $300 an evening. Allie is included in that price.

Just so happens I'm available, as are my other backup DJs (the ones I have to replace me should I ever become sick or unable to speak---god forbid and knock on wood!!!).

Matt,

Thanks for the backup offer. I have a friend/DJ on stand by. My wife went to the drug store and loaded me up with more meds. This vacation sucks!

I use Chloraseptic Spray. Spray it in your mouth, gargle for 15 seconds, spit it out and you're good to go! It actually numbs the throat and irritated areas.

Straight honey shoot about a tablespoon right to the back of your throat. You can do it over and over, try to speak as little as possible before your gig. Works like a charm, probably not as much fun as the pepper thing though.

Jon Tuck

no talking is the best thing as the meds wont work no matter what if you dont completely rest the vocal chords.

I have also used warm water. I googled it when I woke up one day about 4 in the morning and had no voice and a birthday party that day. That and limited talking. My wife lost her voice the other day and now I have the same called so far voice is hear. I have recorded a few announcements like the new years count down and I can lip sinc them if I had to, Room will be dark etc etc. I really would not want to do this but tis better than nothing but whispers.

Rub your chest with vicks, snort the pepper, gargle with warm water and salt and then light a joint. You will be as good as new.

Cool Mist vaporizer before the gig, and the Honey, just before you go on, will do the trick. Though the Tequila & the Pepper thing could show some promise........

Feel better today. The voice is coming back, it sounds like Barry White. Been using everything recommended expect for snorting black pepper and Vicks on the chest. Let’s see what the rest of the day has to offer.

Was not on my A game last night. Let’s see, accidentally stepped on the power cord, killed the music, and almost crashed on my system when I forgot about a step. All this happened in the first 10 minutes of the dance program. After that, I was back in control. My voice made the night with nothing to spare. The vendor that provided the decorations was in the same medical boat. I was her Hall’s supplier and no, she did want a line of pepper.

Over all, the night went great. The mother of the bride was very happy with my performance, along with guests that came up to me at the end of the event.

I’m back in my South Park pajamas now.

The church/hall is at the corner of Cottage & Walnut. From your Mom's house, you come down Fair Oaks Blvd. and turn right at Walnut.

I'm about to have a margarita now. Heavy on the tequilla. Here's to you!

Great job!!!

Oh and BTW I've done the above before.... four times in one night!... I didn't trip and almost crash into my system I actually unpluged my system with my big clauding feet... and it did finally crash my system to the point where I could only shut down by unpluggin' and even though I couldn't shut down... Ots DJ continued to play what was qued even though I had no control over it... Thank you Ots DJ for continueing to work even though my clumbsy feet decided to fork with the system! When I got home I had forked my music drive and had to restore it from my external backup drive and all was good with the world again.

Lessen learned, I now tape my power cords down so that I can't step on them in such a way again.
