Papa Deuce 12-28-2007, 01:25 AM I have to say, I have never been a huge fan, but as I am currently ripping his GH CDs, that he really does have quite an impressive list of hits.... and my favorites are all from his hits - no deep cuts for me.
1. Piano Man
2. New Your State of Mind
3. You May Be Right
Christie Brinkley turned him into a wuss, though.... :sqeek:
patrickrlewis 12-28-2007, 01:28 AM Scenes From An Italian Restaurant (one of my favorite songs ever)
Miami 2017
A Matter of Trust
The Downeaster Alexa
Request Line Productions 12-28-2007, 09:22 AM There's nothing "great" on his greatest hits. You have to dig deeper like with any artist like that.
GLASS HOUSES:
All For Leyna
Close To The Borderline
52nd STREET:
Stiletto
Rosalinda's Eyes
THE NYLON CURTAIN:
Laura
Scandinavian Skies
...and my personal favorite from PIANO MAN:
The Ballad Of Billy The Kid
The Wizard Of OZ 12-28-2007, 10:20 AM Just The Way You Are and Piano Man. Piano Man is getting tired for me from hearing it and singing it so many times.
I like a lot of his songs and would have no problem playing them at any event, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Honesty, It's Still Rock and Roll To Me, Big Shot, Only The Good Die Young, She's Got A Way, Allentown, River Of Dreams. A lot of them are slow and not good for dancing though.
According to an article at Wikipedia he's the sixth top selling recording artist in the US. Someone must like his music. I think several of his songs are great dinner music for weddings.
SoftJock Rick 12-28-2007, 10:45 AM I'm a huge Billy fan :)
That probably comes as no surprise, since I'm from New Yawk :sqlaugh:
I should probably just name them all, but so as not to bore you... ;)
The Stranger
Movin' Out
Captain Jack
Goodnight Saigon
BTW, I saw the play Movin' Out on Broadway a few years ago, and it was fantastic. Not much of a plot, but the band is incredible, and the dancers were flawless.
If ya ever get a chance to see it (I think they're still touring), it's a fun show.
sparkieg 12-28-2007, 11:40 AM If you haven't heard his album "Songs From The Attic", you really need to.
This album contains nothing but live versions of some of Billy's best work, and every song is from his early days. It's a great cruising album.
If I had to put my finger on my favorites though, they would be:
Summer at Highland Falls
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant
Scandinavian Skies
She's Got A Way
Captain Jack
and of course, last but not least -
Ballad of Billy The Kid
On a related note, I was fortunate enough to see Billy's opening show for his "Stranger" tour in Greensboro in 1979. What an incredibly artistic and cool opening for a concert.......Allow me to paint the picture:
House lights go down...lighters are held high above everyones heads as it's almost pitch black in the coliseum.......and then you hear this tinkling of the ivories.......and opening strains of "The Stranger"....everyone gets quiet except for a few catcalls....and as the opening piano chords of the song are played, a sharp white pin-spot focuses on a glass ashtray holding a smoldering cigarette....as the opening chords continue and the opening whistle chrous of the song begins, the white spot light starts to grow to encompass the top of the piano being played and as the circle of light gets a little larger, it settles on just the smoldering cigarette in the ashtray atop the piano and Billy sitting at the piano playing.....
When the mid chorus of the song hits, full stage lights hit hard to reveal a red carpeted two tier stage......
Ahhh, the memories...............

Yes, we saw the touring production when they rolled into Harrahs in AC last year (right after the Expo).
The band was EXCELLENT - Gee, do I lose my "street cred" from the DJ Union for uttering that statement? :sqwink:
The dancers - while good in their own right, we both thought that they got in the way of watching the band - Oh boy, I'm over the edge now for sure...
We liked the fact that they did pull out some more obscure BJ songs (Billy Joel, Ron...LOL) from his discography for the show...
Not sure if we would've paid to see it on Broadway when it was there - but hey, the casino had comped us a pair for the show... so who are we to complain?
On a final note, noob question - What does "YFS" stand for? (As seen in the original thread).
Thanks,
Joe

Jon Tuck 12-28-2007, 06:35 PM Have to credit your son for honesty!! Lazy, Hows your workout schedule doing Papa? Im at the gym 5 days a week now lol. We will have to go train with my son at Coutures Gym where they turn the heat on during sessions.
Papa Deuce 12-28-2007, 06:39 PM Couldn't do that if I wanted to... against my doctor's orders... And the last thing I'm gonna do in Vegas is workout.... :sqlaugh:
Jon Tuck 12-28-2007, 06:42 PM Okay we will join my Son for Sushi at his out of the way place. They idolize my son there we will be with the King!!!

Precisionpower 12-28-2007, 09:17 PM I listen to Billy quite often.
Fav's???
Only the good die young,
Uptown Girl,
We didn't start the fire,
Piano Man
Bryan Durio 12-28-2007, 09:46 PM 2. New Your State of Mind
Maybe even New York State of Mind!
As stated above, I like "Rosalinda's Eyes" too. Actually, most tunes from 52nd Street. "The Entertainer", "Goodnight Saigon," most tunes from An Innocent Man.

Nah. :sqlaugh:
Kirby Ball 12-28-2007, 10:56 PM Rosalinda's Eyes
The Stranger
Get It Right The First Time
Captain Jack
Only The Good Die Young
In no particular order. Mr. Joel has recorded so many really fine tunes over the years it's hard to limit it to just a few.
Brian Martin 12-29-2007, 12:29 AM One of my favorites is Innocent Man. Brings back memories when I told the Judge..........................
