The new domain registry process is insane. especially the process registrars go through when a domain expires.

Seems like a new twist to the "cyber squatting" racket that was dealt with back in the '90s. That case involved individuals moreso than registrars.

They're gonna get nailed for this, just give it time.

I ran into something similar a month or so back.. I searched on GoDaddy to see if a domain was available and it was. While I was deciding on whether or not to throw a few bucks away and buy it someone else snatched it up and parked it. Three days later it was available so I bought it.

I believe it's called "domain tasting" in the industry, I don't dabble much in domains any more but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth that GoDaddy is selling it's searched domains list to others.

On a Friday in May of 2006 I checked the availability of www.drproof.com using NSI's WHOIS, and it reported that the name was available. The next day I rechecked and it was still available, so I decided that I would grab the name the following Monday. On Monday I tried to grab the name but found that some company in Belgium beat me to it. They parked it for a year...did nothing with it...so in May of 2007 I grabbed it with GoDaddy. I guess they figured I'd want the name so badly that I'd pay top dollar to them for it.

Lesson learned: Don't check for the availability of a domain name more than once if you're not going to immediately grab it!
