AlbanyAMS 01-13-2008, 09:36 AM At yesterday's reception, I was going over the plans with the venue manager we walk into the kitchen and talked by the cooks table. The lady next to me was putting together the veggie platter with her bare hands! Not only that, but eating some herself :sqmad: And then putting her hands back into the veggies!!!!
I looked and I bit my tongue...Being in the food business for 12 years, I know it's unsanitary for you to handle raw foods without wearing gloves!
I was totally grossed out...Apparently she didn't think it was a big deal. I DID...
Again, bit my tongue.
The venue manager was just getting over his flu and was hacking all over, then shaking hands with people...I too shook his hand (once) and I immed. went to the bathroom to sanitize!! Argh!!!!!
The owner was present. Don't you think for a moment they would chat and discuss this???
Sorry to rant, but this is disgusting..
Carolyn 01-13-2008, 10:03 AM ewwwwww! I hate that! I actually carry sanitizer in my box, spray and the kind you can use without water.
Had some guy at a Christmas party last month, gag all over his hand and then go to shake mine. I said hon, I would shake your hand but it sounds like you don't feel to well, I really don't want to catch your cold, God bless and Merry Christmas.
AlbanyAMS 01-13-2008, 10:05 AM I can't believe he had the guts to do that! :sqmad:

I have to agree with you on this one! I swear I avoid shaking hands at all cost it's just nasty.
SoftJock Rick 01-13-2008, 05:02 PM Hey Tim, you been watching a lot of Monk lately...? :sqlaugh:
It's kind've funny though, as I live with a dog, and we double dip, yet I wash my hands about 100 times per day -- I'm obsessive on certain things :sqerr:
I very rarely go out in public, and I haven't even had as much as a cold in the last few years... (knock wood).
Our place is a complete and dirty disaster, as I gut and rebuild it, and the dog brings in loads of mud -- but without people, there are no people germs... :)
BTW, I wouldn't worry too much about people not using gloves on the food -- the saliva, stomach and intestines, usually do a pretty good job of getting rid of any nasties. It's peoples breath, coughing and sneezing, that pass most stuff along through your lungs...

Never watched Monk...????
No, I'm just sick of people being rude. You're coughing and you have the balls to want to shake my hand!! :sqmad:
And the food thing, again my restaurant experience had taught me alot..:sqwink:
In NYS, you cannot touch raw foods with your bare hands, it's against health code violations.
Jon Tuck 01-13-2008, 07:23 PM Tim please join us for Dinner and you and I can blast the staff I relish a good lashing LOL. Come on man I want to see you at our 2nd Ourdjtalk dinner.
Playback 01-13-2008, 07:39 PM It's kind've funny though, as I live with a dog, and we double dip.
Yeah, but I'll bet the dog insists on bathing first.....:sqlaugh:
Actually, it's for the above reasons that I never eat from bowls of crisps or nuts on the bar in pubs and clubs, and am very careful at buffets. A survey here in the UK found that there was a high percentage of urine in the remaining foodstuff when shared by lots of people. Just where some use the loo and don't wash their hands after.....
:sqeek:Yeeeeeeetch!!!!!!!!!
Fred Stewart 01-13-2008, 07:49 PM Maybe it's me... but I can't stomach seeing people handle foodstuffs with their bare hands. The fast food joints are notorious for this practice and it really pisses me off.
That stuff is the reason Shirl and I avoid partaking of the meal at a show if we can possibly avoid it. Some people who handle foodstuffs are just plain nasty. Ya don't know what yer eatin' nor who's handled it.
Honestly... we have to wear gloves, hair nets and beard covers when handling product at Playtex. And tampons ain't food.:wtf:
A few years back, we were on our annual Christmas trip to Western PA to visit with the pups. We stopped at one of the service areas on the Pennsy Turnpike to get some Burger King grub.
The manager was the only one in the house at that time of night. He was handling the cash register and manufacturing hamburgers ~ no gloves. Shirl and I prayed we wouldn't get sick and never patronized a BK on the turnpike again.
When we made the trip last year we noticed that there were no more BKs in the service areas. They've been replaced by Quiznos. We got a couple of Quiznos subs and the lady who took our order was wearing gloves. She sliced and wrapped 'em then took 'em to the register.
The young man at the register never touched food. It was prepared and wrapped by the time he got it. I can live with that. :)
Papa Deuce 01-13-2008, 07:58 PM I have to agree with you on this one! I swear I avoid shaking hands at all cost it's just nasty.
But can I hug you?
Brian Martin 01-13-2008, 08:32 PM Tim, this is only what you know about. Think about how many times a day you touch a door knob, stair rail, shopping cart handle, money, or a public pay phone. These are loaded with germs. I've seen people use the restroom and never wash their hands. So you never know what's on someones hands when they offer to shake yours.
To cover yourself, you would have to wash your hands a hundred times a day. I always carrie a small bottle of liquid hand sanitizer or wipes.

Think about how many times a day you touch a door knob - Office door knob, I wash my hands..
stair rail - nope...
shopping cart handle - hand sanitizer provided.-
money- wash before I eat..
or a public pay phone.-
cell...which is dirty I know..
Hey I'm not perfect...But clean!
Papa Deuce 01-13-2008, 08:58 PM Is it wrong that I let my dog take a piece of bologna from my mouth as a trick? :sqerr::sqwink: Yeah, I really do.... :sqlaugh:
Tyrone Blue 01-13-2008, 09:12 PM I ALWAYS wash my hands in the mens room, but now you have to grab the handle to open the door. Why don't they make men's rooms doors that swing OUT so you can push it with your butt (they ALL swing in)?
So many guys don't wash their hands and I now have to grab a dirty door handle that they just grabbed. If theres a towel dispenser, I use that and toss the towel back into the room after I open the door... but if there's only a blow drier... then what?
jokerswild 01-13-2008, 09:29 PM I can understand why you'd be upset with food handling proceedures... but some of the other stuff is just paranoia..... if I lived my life that way I'd never leave the house.... carry hand sanitizer... pffft why? Did you know after prolonged and consistant use of hand sanitizers they become less affective.... and anti-bacterial soap is a falicy.
No I agree food handler's should at least wash before handling raw food and wash between foods and anytime they leave the work area. Surfaces should be sanitized regularly is a must...
Speaking of discusting things.... I did a wedding where the food was brought out family style and as one of the youngest of the waite staff was takin back a used bowl of mashed... he licked the excess potato off his thumb and after dissapearing into the kitchen promptly returned with a fresh bowl of taters... and I know he didn't have time to wash after lickin' his thumb..... needless to say I declined a plate of food instead wife went out to McDonalds for me... not so sure which was the worse of the two evils but atleast my burger was wraped...
SoftJock Rick 01-13-2008, 09:51 PM but some of the other stuff is just paranoia.....
I whole heartedly agree!
Other then absolving oneself from humankind -- much like me, it is futile to resist the germs... :sqerr:
Besides, it ain't cool Guy wise, to carry little napkins :sqwink:
Is it wrong that I let my dog take a piece of bologna from my mouth as a trick?
What do you mean trick? How do you think you learned how to eat Son... :sqlaugh:
Papa Deuce 01-13-2008, 09:53 PM We need germs to build stronger immune systems.....

That works, but...
JD and Corona taste better
Bill Hollick 01-14-2008, 12:38 AM Talk about Eeeeewwwwww, I worked a large outdoor event last year where some of the servers were assembling hamburgers and hot dogs on buns. They were gloved up, just as they should be. This was great until I watched one of the gloved ladies reach into the till to make change and then go right back to assembling burgers. I only noticed this happen once but I'm sure it was the practice of the day. Eeeeewwwwww!!!
DJ Zac 01-14-2008, 01:26 AM I don't know about all this germ paranoia... I mean, heck... I once used my mouth to put a dollar in a stripper's...
Never mind...

Oh well...Maybe I am!
Nobody did mention this Monk thing, is it a TV show? What is it all about??
patrickrlewis 01-14-2008, 07:12 AM Oh well...Maybe I am!

It's a great show on USA.
Tony Shaloub plays a complete neurotic detective (think Jack Nicholson's character from As Good As It Gets).
It's one of the few treats on TV now.
As far as this topic goes, I don't pay any attention to any of the things you guys are talking about (yeah, I know, big shock right, lol).
I think it's just people being a little too sensitive. Everyone has eaten out hundreds of times. and rather it is a fast food place or a 5 star restaurant, the things that go on in a kitchen would sicken everybody.

Yes, I've always thought this too. I do this trick with the towels, and have in the past used a key or something else in my pocket to 'hook' the door open if the handle looks particularly disgusting. Still not 100% hygenic, but better than that door handle!
One local pie shop that I went to on occasions had a member of staff that not only used bare hands with the food, but also used to pet any customer's dog that came in with them, then went back to serving the customers again without going anywhere near the sink.
Consequently, I stopped buying stuff from there........
Yeeeeeetch.......:sqerr:
