Thanks

Ya, I'm definately going to go with Rockit.... it seems to be the best bang for the buck

And it occured to me that since the smaller skins ie the 1020x768 and 800x600 on a display that is set to 1280x1024 gives me space to the right and at the bottom of the skin that if I just fill in I can then use winamp over top of the empty space for karaoke and have both on screen at the same time..

So, once I get something like photoshop elements I can fancy things up too.... I do like the skin you've made so far and ya having the automix open is great.... i've been just setting it off to the right as I practice and get to know Rockit...

jokerswild

Ok so this is a bit generic but here was my idea....

Take say the Dark Gray 1024x768 and simply add to the right and left some gray area to make it 1280x1024 like this: (post continued in next post)

jokerswild
01-15-2008, 09:27 PM
Now add to that Winamp in "Always on top mode" to the right side and you get this:

jokerswild
01-15-2008, 09:35 PM
So to continue this:

I'd like to move the My Computer down to the bottom of the screen the size is fine and make the My library one longer....

Then move the middle library down size is fine and move the buttons with it... and extend the AutoMix playlist screen down and make it longer...

move the request list down like the my computer and extend the length of the search window...

Honestly, that is a tough skin to work with -- it is the one I used while designing Rockit's skinning system, and has about 60 layers on it :sqerr:

It was not really meant to be anything more then a template, as it has most of the functions available on it.

Yer best working with a background that is the same color, and not gradiented in any way, as that requires quite a bit of overlay work for the button holders, knob backgrounds, etc...

Took me hours to get the round button underlays, and all that good stuff worked out.

I suppose that makes me the difficult one now...:sqwink:

I just like the idea of being able to have both programs up on screen at the same time and by extending the skin to match the height and width of my monitor I reduce the risk of me moving it around on my screen and ruining the x,y locations of things... if the deck locations and stuff moved with it I'd have no problem....

Really it don't need to be as fancy just so long as it has the main things...

the players, automix list, library tree, library, search window and request window... heck I don't really see the need for the deck lists at all... those could be scrubed...

Yeah, the base is the easy part. I made a few new knobs/butons and tweaked the existing ones. I only squeezed the base in about 20 pixels, but I had to move everything to it's spot.

There's always a way.

It's tough to make skins with all the features present. They look too busy (IMO). All the stuff is just a click away anyway.

SoftJock Rick
01-16-2008, 04:32 PM
My next ones (after garbage and cleaning day), are gonna be actual photos of the different controllers as backgrounds. This should be fun... :sqerr: :sqeek:

After that, come the touchscreen ones, as Rockit fully supports them and overlays as well.

And yeah Hank, I agree. If you put too much stuff on it, it gets too busy and hard to work with when playing IMHO. I keep the skin browser showing on startup all the time, so I can pick what suits my need for that given session.

Dude, this one is sweeeeeeeet.... way better than what I'm working on... can ya do it in 1280x1024 & 1280x800? My **** is lame by comparison:

See??? The idea with this one is to have the controls obviously up at the top in the two decks.... then in the narrow window with the crossfader would be the buttons from the DarkGray skin... below that in the first box would be an extended MyLibrary with a simularly sized MyComputer window the size of the one from the Darkgray skin.... the middle would be the tracklist of course... the right box would be an extended Automix window with associated buttons and indicators from the darkgray skin and below that would be a request window with buttons that i could use in conjunction with highlighting a song then click a button for queing it into the automix que instead of drag and dropping it...

Well that's the idea and would translate well to the Denon Skin....

Thoughts?

I'm probably going to keep working in 1024 x 768 since it's pretty common (and what I use).
You get more space in the bigger ones, but that's way too much for my hobbyist brain to handle. You can always do that stretchy trick for the lists or I can extend the carpeted area to the right and bottom?

actually yeah if you could just extend the side and bottom no need for you to do anything with the xml I can make those changes now that I'm getting the hang of it... I just can't do the fancy static graphic.... so if you could provide the larger size without the updated xml i can make that change myself....

I'm working on an extended version based loosely on the DarkGray and Bluemetal skins.... I like the buttons of DarkGray and the layout of the Bluemetal so I'm stitching them together so to speak.... might take me a day or two to turn on the buttons but I will post the finished product...

Because they haven't read the Appendixes to the manual ;)

For example, let's say you had Rockit running on your machine attached to the Internet. You give me your IP address, and I can send you requests, that will pop up in your Request list :)

You can also control Rockit remotely -- the commands available (the ones I documented), can do just about any feature that a skin control can, from a 1000 miles away.

I'll pe putting a test client app up soon on the website (mine works fine, but it's not pretty yet) :)

Quick question about the Headers....

This could be because I'm working with the demo version but I can move the column headers but when I shut down and restart the program they do not remain where i moved them... is this a function of the order in which they appear in the XML file or something disabled in the demo version?

Request Line Productions
01-17-2008, 07:37 AM
If you are talking about the white headers (title, artist, etc.), then "yes", they will stay adjusted in the registered version. As far as I can see, there is no option to change the order, color or text in these fields. Much like when you "frame" something in CSS.

I have slid the indexes over only to reveal the title and artist. I don't like crowded screens.

SoftJock Rick
01-17-2008, 09:05 AM
Ahhh, the headers... :sqerr: :sqlaugh:

No differences between the trial and full version, everything is enabled on the trial :)

Rockit will remember the header sizes, but not the order, as we use that internally for various operations. I just size the ones I don't want to see to a zero width.

As Hank mentioned, the actual header text cannot be modified, although the list text can be. We use slightly tweaked Windows list controls, so you get the header that comes with it... ;)

I'll be experimenting with that for the next update, and see what I can come up with... :)

All in good fun and one of those 'cool factor features', but nothing that I'll ever use Rick.

Don't be sooo quick to say that Randy, as it opens up a lot of potential -- think about it, users can text you requests from their cell phones from the dancefloor, etc..., they automatically get looked up in your library, and popup in your request list ;)

Yeah, that's a cool feature for some situations (night club?). I certainly wouldn't want wedding guests to pull out their phones, PDAs and blackberry during the function.

I'm not a hardware Dude (anymore) :sqlaugh:

Actually, our Remote Request System does that already -- you supply the hardware though.

RRS doesn't interface directly with Rockit 4's library, but they still work together fine. The new client I'm developing, will be used to interface directly with V4s Comm layer.

Note that although Rockit doesn't currently do Karaoke, it may... ;)

If I put it in, it would be a perfect match for the Comm layer, as the singers could input their choices from a remote station(s), which will automatically feed into Rockit.

Always trying to think ahead...

I don't know that it's impersonal... I use a system simular to that for karaoke... hadn't thought of using it for weddings and such.... I tell ya I had a great idea last night... I think I read somewhere in the XML that colors can be set to solids or can be transparent...

If that's the case I'm thinking I could choose just about any background I want like oh I don't know.... some album art from Iron Maiden featureing Eddy.. I think there was some artwork of him with headphones on if I remember right.

But, really goes further than that.... say you work directly for a club and they want their logo to fill your screen or somethin.... just load it up as the background and build a couple decks like I did without filling in with color just boxes....

My mind is spinning and I'm probably not making sense the possiblities are endless if this is the case!

Thanks man,

The sad thing is, that I rarely get paid to use them. Outside of doing logos for you guys and some stuff for my wife's office, it's just a hobby. I work at my buddy's sign shop now and then, but not designing. Just application and layout. Most people don't want to pay extra for the designing and just use text & clipart.

I have no degree in art. In fact, I dropped out of high school and got my GED in 1983. Since then, I do what it takes. :sqfrown:

Maybe I'll get discovered by exercising my talent out here in cyberspace. I'd pack up the family and go tomorrow if I could.

Speaking of LED lights.....

The level indicator lights... even after I set everything to zero the outline for them still appear in all of my skins and I can't turn them off to design my own... style.

What am I missing if i have all of the visable="0" set and they still show?

I am using the DarkGray xml as my launching pad along with the graphics... I like the round buttons... but, it seems that if I set everything to zero they should dissapear, right?

If they are touching other items on the screen, the may still show. Check the xy. If you don't want them at all and they are showing still. Set the xy off the page.

That is what we call an "undocumented feature", in the business :sqlaugh: :sqwink:

It only happens if the value="vu" type is used. I didn't catch that before release, because all my skins had them showing.

Take vu out of the value, and it will then disappear :)

Hank, downloaded the Exec. Try something on your end and see if you get something weird. I have my desktop set at 1280x....when I want to drag the RockIt window, the background in your jewel cases get wacky. See if you get that too. Looks like you have them transparent. Maybe drop a black background into them.

The actual line. The wav from. Also the entire progress line. I labeled 1,2,3 the same gray color as the text and they show as white.

The actual line. The wav from. Also the entire progress line. I labeled 1,2,3 the same gray color as the text and they show as white.

On the progress lines, make sure nothing is in the value="" field. That overrides the colors, and uses built in hatch brushes I made. If there is no match for a hatch brush, I'm not sure what it will show...

Hang on, let me look at my source code... tic-toc, tic-toc...

For progress controls, the value can range from H1-H7, anything else is undefined.

For VU meters, the values can be V1-V5, H1-H4.

On the viewpeak, the linecolor is the actual color of the wave itself. The gridcolor, is the little dotted center line.

I sorta knew that, but the linecolor and gridcolor are not accepting my choices.

EXAMPLE:

<viewpeak action="vp-a" visible="1" x="427" y="120" w="129" h="025" linecolor="6E6B68" bkcolor="82AEBF" gridcolor="6E6B68" tcolor="000000"/>

<viewpeak action="vp-b" visible="1" x="605" y="304" w="129" h="025" linecolor="6E6B68" bkcolor="82AEBF" gridcolor="6E6B68" tcolor="000000"/>

Hank,

Also, you need to update the drag-n-drop rectangles. If you drag into the request list, it places the song into Deck a. Dragging into Deck B, does nothing.

I don't need a larger resolution. I was just thinking of a person who may prefer to have a smaller resolution of RockIt on their screen and another application. When I move RockIt, the jewel case displays get some weird artifacts. It looks like you have that area transparent. I think just throwing a black background on it, would fix the problem.

Ah, never mind, I see your post above on the empty art cd. Duh!

SoftJock Rick
01-19-2008, 01:00 PM
Yeah, there are certain combinations of background and line colors that don't work all that good.

Reason being, we have to create a monochrome mask to do the drawing and transparency stuff, and some combos just XOR out the actual color, so white will come out.

I honestly have no idea what combos will do that, so you will have to experiment a bit. I put it in the "Rockit Upgrade Notebook", and I'll see if I can add a parameter that will override that for future versions... :)

Request Line Productions
01-19-2008, 01:54 PM
Hank,

Also, you need to update the drag-n-drop rectangles. If you drag into the request list, it places the song into Deck a. Dragging into Deck B, does nothing.

You don't drag a song onto the the flash drive that says "Request List". You click on it and it opens a new window that you can then drag songs into (even though the "no" symbol appears, it still accepts drag and drop).

Right clicking on the tracklist will enter songs into the "automix list".

Randy A
01-19-2008, 02:07 PM
Rick,

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hank, try dragging a song into either of the decks and see if it works?

There are hidden rectangles set up behind the scenes (located in the XML file) that have to be set up to where your deck displays are located on you skin.

You know what it's missing.... a voice drop gain control...

Basically a button that can be engaged to reduce the music volume that has an adjustable db gain setting which would allow the DJ to do voice overs without having to go to the mixer drop the volume make the announcement then pump it up again.... all he/she'd have to do is click a button with a pre-defined or variable gain drop .... not a sudden one but a gradual one.

This is useful because once you get your mic settings to the point of being loud enough... you can simply drop the music level temporarally then disengage the button to return the music back to where it was.... without having to mess with the mixer, be it your physical mixer or the Rockit mixer.

Booch,

Start in Photoshop. Think of a theme and make a basic background image.
Then, skim through the existing skins to see what buttons and knobs you like.
Assign them positions using the XY coordinates. Basically play around. You learn so much just by playing around with something.

Yes, there are tons of images and textures out there to find. Many are on white or you can cut them out with the lasso tool. I then add shadow and/or glow effects for depth.

However, many objects I created from scratch with basic shapes layered on top of each other (like the ipods and the jukebox). No photos were used in these cases. I'm also trying not to use existing buttons where I can. Sometimes, it's just too much work to create every little thing though.

It's just arts and crafts time for me anyway. Hopefully it will spin into some logo/card work. Paying design fees for a ground up skin could be as expensive as buying the program itself. Too much time involved. Especially with back and forth changes that would occur.

YIKES!

It will take me some time cause I'm still learning... heck I just figured out the Magic Wand thingy ... now I need to figure out the lasso.... I've be just draging to a bigger blank layer and separating the images there then moving them to my work in progress... would the lasso make this easier?

I haven't used elements yet, nut I here many of the commands are the same.

BTW,

With the Rickster's help, all my skins are now self-installing.

Get them all here (http://home.comcast.net/~djboston/gallery/rockit.html).

Actually yes, some side work. My wife's office moved this week, so I was setting up their computers. How many skins do you need anyway? :sqconfused:
