jokerswild 01-14-2008, 11:39 AM This topic is not meant to bash anyone of these software makers or their products and is just my opinion and my way of trying to weight out my options...
If you'd like to make your own comparisons and list why you do or why you do not use one or the other feel free to sound off.
Rockit:
Pros:
Skinable
Shows BPM
Album Art
AGC
Hellofa Service Tech
Cons:
No Karaoke
No Auto Beat Mix
No Key Signature Display or Mixing
Difficult to do non-predesigned slideshows
Playlists have limited manipulation capabilities save for Randomizeing and Right Clicking to move tracks
OtsAV DJ
Pro:
BPM display and Auto Beat Mixing
Adv. AGC control
Dynamic Processor: Includes Compressor/Limiter
Low Latency when making changes to EQ or Dynamic Processor
Easily do Slideshows
Karaoke
Easily manipulate all playlists and work areas
Cons:
Non-Skinnable
No Karaoke Rotation Handling
Does not show Key Signature
Does not mark played items (which is a con of Rockit too)
VDJ
Pros:
Shows BPM and Auto Beat mixes
Shows Key Signatures
Marks Played items
Easy to do slide shows
Auto Gain Controls
Karaoke
Cons:
No Karaoke Rotation Handleing
Most expensive of the three
Not crazy about it taking over the desk top in full screen mode
Bryan Durio 01-14-2008, 01:41 PM You forgot that OtsAV plays music videos and can beat mix them...

True but I was listing what features I liked that were important to me... I could live without being able to beatmix video... since I don't do video.... and probably never will... however, it is a nice feature to have should I change my mind... but not important to me at this stage....
good point tho thanks
Keep 'em comming I will be making my decision by the end of February.
Bryan Durio 01-14-2008, 03:08 PM That makes sense. The video aspects don't mean much to me as a DJ either since I don't do video! But it is a big feature of OtsAV.
Jumpin' Jeff 01-14-2008, 04:16 PM You mention Slideshow in VDJ, but not in OtsAV DJ....
It's very easy for slideshow in OtsAV also. Just point to a folder, and determine random or sequenced order. It also shows album art, but then again, VDJ has cover art too. Or at least a cover flow...
You mention AGC in 2 of the 3 products... Why not remain consistant for all items, and list the same item for all, whether it be pro or con. Otherwise it unbalances the whole scale of things.
You did the same with skinable... Listed Pro for Rocket, and con for Ots, but nothing for VDJ.
You've listed 10 items for Rocket, 11 for otsAV DJ, and 9 for VDJ.
Stay consistant! ;)

Understand I'm trying to hash out why one might be worth more to me than the other....
This is by no means a total list these are just my observations on what things I like and which programs did them easier or better than the other not that they don't have them...
All three have the ability to do slideshows it's just that I've used VDJs and not OtsAV's so I can't speak on it from a live performance standpoint.
Same with the AGC the thing with that is there is little to compare.....
Rockit's don't do it very well... sorry Rick
VDJ does it better
and Ots DJ does it best...
Beat mixing:
Rockit don't
VDJ does
OTS does it better
Skinning
Rockit does via XML pages which is cool (and if I had Photoshop I'd do some neat stuff with it)
VDJ has skins (whether they are user creatable and how easy that process is I have no idea so can't speak on it)
Ots DJ does not have skins
Album Art
They all display it in some form or fashion
Video
All do video some do it easier than others
Ots AV - Easiest IMO
VDJ - Easy
Rockit - Not as easy but it does it in a separate player. (which is nice since I don't have to tie up an audio player) I think VDJ works much this way too.
Basically I'm trying to get the features and benifits straight in my head before I invest between $130-$350 in software....
I've been demo'ing these products for a while and actually used VDJ to do a live show and I own a license for Ots DJ Boombox, which I've outgrown... I need BPM and possible Beat Matching.... Key Signatures -eh- maybe.

Just Added:
PCDJ RED 5.2
Pros:
Stable as H311
Skinable
Shows BPM
Able to run two 4 players at the same time
Easy to location your music by the use of tabs
Keeps a running log of what has been played. (Not as nice as Newer softwares :( )
Easy to set CUEs
Easy to set cross reference of music sets (which also help searching them out)
Easy waiting list to build
Easy upload of client music list (once you set it up)
Stalbe as H311 (oops I said that already... :) )
Cons:
No Auto Beat Mix
A lot more work to file and log your music within the software recordcase
It is old software which may not be able to be found anymore
Has not been updated... :(
It's no longer supported by it's creator... :(
:)
jokerswild 01-14-2008, 04:50 PM Oh yeah forgot all three... well all four are easy to set pre-defined cue points.... that's important in order to cut the pillow talk off of most of Barry White's music.... lol
And of them VDJ, Ots and Rockit... no stupid PITA record case.... which I personally hated about PCDJ Blue VRM which I have... to much of a pain in the but to try and rip files directly to or to move them to specific file folders for the purpose of organizing a record case....
Jumpin' Jeff 01-14-2008, 05:08 PM Sorry, I guess I would have listed my points of interest, and then applied them to all the products pro or con, so as show a visible weighting of each product.
It's your list though, so go for it. ;)
You said you weren't interested in video, but I can say without doubt that, although I haven't seen Rockits video first hand, OtsAV produces the most supurb video I've seen.
(Coming from a guy who owns both OtsAV and VDJ.)
You're spot on with the Karaoke rotation bit.
I can see where boombox is not enough for you... If you plan to do slideshows though, you'll need to skip Silver, and go to OtsAV DJ. I'm sure you're aware that there was a new release 1/12/2008... Be sure to give that trial a shot.
jokerswild 01-14-2008, 05:20 PM Ya and with Ots latest releases it's all the more confusing for me
You have:
Ots Silver - not much better than Ots Boombox
OtsAV DJ - Adds video, audio streaming via Shoutcast, Beat Mixing... etc.
then theres:
OtsAV Radio - Can't quite figure out the main difference between this and OtsAV DJ
& the Grand Daddy of them:
OtsAV TV - This one really peaks my interest due to the fact that I'd like to broadcast video of my gigs and audio via Shoutcast or other type of web broadcast solution... agian there is little to go on... they lack good descriptions and when you try to compare benifits their page only compares Ots Silver and OtsAV DJ
Then there's the price tag difference... I can upgrade Boombox to OtsAV DJ for $219 but the others don't have a discouted upgrade price tag, which also make them less appealing to me....
Which brings me to VDJ... it's price tag is $299.00 very high IMO
then there's Rockit at $129.
If it were price alone and all things were the same I'd go for Rockit and probably still will.... once I hash out what I want to do.
Rockit also has one really appealing thing about it..... SERVICE.
Jumpin' Jeff 01-15-2008, 08:46 AM I'll admit that even I am confussed about the new Ots Structure.
OtsAV DJ and TV both do Video, Radio does not.
Radio is an audio only solution.
Between DJ and TV, I don't see much difference except for TV offers 720 definition video support, where as DJ offers Enhanced Definition.
To the second scheduling can be done with Radio and TV versions, but not with DJ.
OtsDJ is supposedly geared with all the features that a DJ would need. I wouldn't think it'd be necessary to even look at the radio and TV versions personally, but that's just my opinion. They are really geared for another market, and can get quite pricey.
djMarco 01-15-2008, 10:42 AM I use VDJ because i can see the waws and its important to me if i do some small aplikation and work only with one sound card.
We forget to mention two also wery good Dj programs:
Traktor Dj and BPM studio both excelent programs with good and bad sides as all other softweres. But i think the debate to find the best one is useles. For me is VDJ.Why?I like it because the simplicity. But thats me.For someone else is Rockit the best. Why?He knows.
jokerswild 01-15-2008, 10:20 PM After weighing all the options and the price.... I feel the product that will give me the most bang for my buck will be.....

Rockit
Now I'm not saying that the other products in this topic are less of a product in comparison... actually some outperform feature wise... but lack in other ways for me.... All are great products BTW
Randy A 01-16-2008, 08:31 AM I don't think you'll regret that choice!
CadDog 01-16-2008, 12:50 PM Well not know Rockit
One on the big things I can say is
In come with a nice price...
If there's a demo I will down loading
and try it out to see what all the big talk is about...
More at 11:00
djMarco 01-16-2008, 01:21 PM Softjock Rick 1:0 other softwere..............Bravo Rick
I hope you choose the best for you Rob!If that is Rockit OK!
