It's nice to know that as soon as we get caught up, the Japanese raise the TV Tech bar on us again. This time with a 33 million Pixel picture, 24 point Surround Sound it should be ready to launch in 2015.

Hopefully the feds will keep the broadcast standard at HDTV levels for at least 10 more years.

It's gonna take us at least that long to get rid of the "copper" infrastructure to become 100% digital fiber optic, which from what I read sounds like this is what this new system was designed for.

If past experience is an indicator, I'd say twenty years or longer before the technology is available here in the USA. If it ever gets here, it will be priced above the average person's ability to buy it. Remember $8000.00 flat screen TVs?
It took 20 years for US television manufacturers to finally figure out that NTSC TV sound (which is FM) could be offered in stereo.
It took 20 years for HDTV to get to the masses here in the US. Yup, Japan had it on the market back in the '80s.
As it is, the US doesn't have much in the way of HDTV programs to watch. The infrasructure is finally in place, yet much of what is available is not true HD. It's compressed and distorted all to hell. But that doesn't deter the cable providers from gouging customers for it. Cable bills are too high as it is. We're paying a lot of money to watch endless commercials. 100 channels and television is still the "vast wasteland" it has always been. And we haven't seen the last of it. HD programming shouldn't cost a damn dime extra.
Folks, I apologize for the rant here... but this has always been a sore subject with me. :)

I have read we should start hearing something in the next several years about 3DTV also on the horizon projection TV using Red Blue and Green Lasers.
