Not A Bar Show, Not a Private Event...?

Something intersting has Happened. While doing a bar show, the man in charge of a local country club's restaurant/bar came in, decided he likes what I do, and needs something to bolster the restaurant, especially during the winter of (courses closed) season.

Since this was not to be a regular weekly thing, but he has booked be for more than one show, I am charging my lowest [B]private event[B] fee, which is still much more than a bar show.

However, since it is at a restaurant that's open to the public, and not event based, I plan on operating it as if it was a regular bar show ( my regular shows are all -with one exception- in upscale restaurant bars).. This is a Karaoke show only. Some filler music if a slow start, but not a DJ/karaoke mixed event.

Does my mentality in regard to this situation seem about right? So far he has me booked twice in February, but if successful, I'm sure more will be forthcoming, as well as a LOT of referrals and leads for private events.

Any input at all will be greatly appreciated.

What is the clientele like? Are they older gentlemen and their wives, similar in age to DJ Gray? (He would probably have some good input on this topic)

What is your new boss expecting? Does he want the same thing as your "Bar" show, or something different?

My advice is to bring some ringers for the first night out of the box.

If you know some pretty girls from one or more of your bar shows who are good singers, maybe you can offer to pick up some of their bar tab (maybe a couple of drinks) on the 1st couple of nites.

then, negotiate with the Country Club manager, for a cheap price for Drink Tickets (say, 10 drinks for $15). On the first couple of nights you'll be out $30 in drink tickets.

But the word will get out among the members of the Club.......Hot Chix are comin' to Karaoke Nite at the CC.

Matt do you bring some of the girls from your crazy horse days to your upper level events or better yet your previous life efforts at the moose or legion? Do you bring those folks along to support your Hilton Hotel events? LOL sorry. I think Country Clubs in some areas are members only! Joe good luck and keep us posted.

My input was based on what I believe Joe was communicating to me:

(1) The Club is not "private" (Members Only) on the nights he's been hired.

(2) The other bar gigs are at upscale establishments. Therefore, he is attracting High Class white collar executive and admins, why not steer them to the new digs, with some free drinks. then again, it goes both ways since we now have "Cougars" (40-50's divorced or widowed females, looking for a boy toy...RRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrow!)

Clientele looks to be 40s +, and I have plenty of titles for them. Is there something else I should be thinking that's age related? Spit it out- that's what I'm looking for.....

My ringers ARE pretty girls, some who can sing, some less talented ( so newbies won't feel intimidated) Standard practice... they'll be there - drinks or not. But ALWAYS an excellent idea..

Wouldn't negotiating cheaper drinks make ME look lower scale to the management?

Right on ALL counts- including the "cougers". Bringing in some male singers for them too. Good Input!

I don't know if free drinks are the ticket. If they are haning out in a CC they probally have a few bucks or like to pretend they do.

I think the ticket is being yourself and having fun.

In this situation I think the dj / karaoke will be the best idea in keeping people there. Few karaoke songs some dance music. Take request if they don't want to sing offer to play a song.

Being that you are getting paid more than a bar to your standard. Step up your service bring 2 subs instead of one. Bring a nice lighting setup maybe 4 fixtures. Ask management for give aways instead of free drinks. Most CC have pro shops ask managenet for golf related giveaways.

Run a short contest like a TV tunes kamakazie contest and most applause gets 9 holes of golf.

Be creative and think out of the box and most of all step up your performance this is a great selling point.

Sell apperance in your self and your company. I'd wear at least a collared shirt every night if not dress pants also.

i've noticed, in a similar venue, that the cougars are the key...if you get them active, you win!!!...i ALWAYS work "my" cougars to show up, even if i have to give them rides and pay the cover..and it never hurts to have a few "studly boys" flirting with new arrivals..i may be a bit more flambouyant in dress than most but "dress to the nines" with a stylish shirt and slacks, never jeans and a T...remember, first impressions last the longest and it only takes about 15 seconds for that first one...chat with the owner about how far you can take your show...do not dismiss the KJ/DJ format..you will probably need to do that until the clients develope a "trust" for you which will probaly take 2-3 shows...i believe HIGH IMPACT creates maximum results...the first few gigs, give them everything you can...

Thanks Cam. However, I was hired to do a KARAOKE show. So filler only.

I WILL upgrade the lighting ( good suggestion) for this show, but no extra subs. It's my opinion that the extra bass is a detriment to karaoke, where midrange is king.

The TV Tunes thing may be a VERY good idea, as I have a VERY comprehensive set of TV theme songs...THANKS!

BTW- Even my "casual" dress is fairly formal...I NEVER wear an uncollared shirt or blue jeans...

It sounds like a great gig, and you've gotten some good advice here. Don't forget - young executives still golf, too!

I *almost* always buy drinks or drink chips (no absolutes here :D) - a reward for happy singers and non-singers - I'll do some trivia, maybe, or reward a bold singer who gives in to a friend's song dare. I figure, it never hurts.
