Kirby Ball 01-20-2008, 12:25 PM What song or songs have cleared the floor for you lately? :sqembarrassed:
Last night we had our last (our was it the first of this year ) company "Holiday" party.
Right after we did "Cupid Shuffle", we went into Kanye West's "Stronger" (I prefer the original by Daft Punk..end of editorial:sqwink:) and I could have sworn that they "ran off the dance floor" which has not happened with this song until last night.
So, again...what song or songs "have killed the mood" at a recent (not something from 10 years ago..:sqembarrassed:) event that you've DJ'd?
Just curious....
Here in CA, Kanye West doesn't have much of a following. He's really big in Chicago & midwest because that is his main stomping ground.
His music generally lacks proper tempo for dancing (w/ exception of Gold Digger).
Last time I played "Stronger"--- it cleared the floor for me, as well.
jokerswild 01-20-2008, 02:41 PM I was in a Disco set and put on Disco Duck... and they about ran out off the floor until I quickly faded to an ABBA tune....
I like the song I think its a fun one....

Ok, Rob...You're scaring me! :sqwink:
Jon Tuck 01-20-2008, 02:45 PM Never had much luck with Disco Duck. The only response if any is a bunch of folks Quacking up for my silly choice and then proceeding to vacate the dance floor. Stronger, Low, Get Buck In Here, Yeah and sexyback amongst my 80's and 90's sets kept my Canadian Tire crowd groovin last night. I will post more on the gig report later.
Fred Stewart 01-21-2008, 01:09 AM Anything with rap in it.
I am serious. I can have a great hiphop or old school funk set going with a full floor. Put on one track that has that ghetto thug chanting and the floor clears. Rap sweeps the floor.
DjDennis 01-21-2008, 08:31 AM not that I have done it of late ....
but a few years ago I was doing a 30th and no matter what crappy song came on they would NOT go home
I did an hour over the alloted time (Got double) the venue wants me back and the client I have done 3x more shows since then
as for songs that clear the floor I really cant remember the last one , because if you can read a crowd and can see what they will dance too you should be able to keep them there...

You Played Disco Duck? That is an abomination that song put the nail in the head of Disco.. Shame on you and you deserved to have them clear the floor
(Loud Whitsle sound) Flag on the play 10 yard penalty unnecessarily playing an incredibly bad song that should have never been recorded.
" Al Brett Farve would have never played that song AAAHH If Brett would have played it they would have danced cause Brett is the.... the best DJ in the world... Brett could play the chicken dance with 4 blown speakers and a dirty needle and a broke Amplifier and still they would have danced cause thats just Brett Farve being Brett Farve oh yeah...Brett Is like BOOOM ....tough actin Tinactin baby
maestro 01-21-2008, 01:35 PM Too funny! I read the title of the thread and already made up my mind that I would enter Stronger as my current floor-clearing song when I read exacty that in the actual thread. That song has sucked for me from the get go, always clearing the floor. You can still play Golddigger and get a great response but other than that, Kanye's stuff sucks for dancing. I can here Kanye now... "That mutha-f'ker white piece of $hit wannabe DJ..."
Don't forget guys that generally, our crowds suck dancing wise compared to 15 - 20 years ago. Now they appear to be much more song-selective. Meaning they pack the floor for one tune and clear the floor for the next. At least I had a kick-butt wedding crowd this past Saturday and handed out more cards that any other gig in my career. :)
Chuck The DJ 01-21-2008, 03:44 PM About a year ago I was at a wedding... playing a rock set, floor was going nuts... I put on Footloose...... wham,,, every single person left!!
I stood there stunned and looked around at the people sitting so I just hit STOP,,, and said... "wow that was a bomb! people laughed and I put on "Dropped a Bomb On Me"
People came down.... funny ****!

Dennis, Dennis, You have never cleared the floor never, ever ever........Barry gives Dennis time to soul search.... really? Come to one of my shows I will show you how to do it from time to time.:sqlaugh:
DJ Cam 01-21-2008, 03:51 PM Stronger is past tense. Good life is on the down slope if your are going to Kanye you need to be playing Flashing Lights.
I can't think of any real prodomite floor clearers. I make sure not to play songs past their prime. The most recent song I pulled from active play for clearing the floor is Sexyback, it's just too old.
Chuck The DJ 01-21-2008, 03:57 PM You know I have been known to at times TRY to clear the floor just for fun.... I'll find some off the wall song, that may work and go to myself.... watch this.... but it's funny, most of the time, it doesn't work! LOL

Interesting... In my parts, any Kanye other than Gold Digger sucks for weddings, period. But then again, this is Canada... lol
Sexyback still works HUGE for me, even with the older ladies. I guess we are just waaaaay behind the times up in the Great White North...
Jon Tuck 01-21-2008, 04:20 PM Hell I still play Wild Thang with Granny and Grand daughter and all in between up on the floor. Chuck when me and my partner used to play the military clubs we would intentionally clear the floor to yank em right back the very next mix. It served the bar well and was a fun challenge to see what the other would use to reel em back in. I once played walk the Dinosaur-Was Not Was (one of my favorites but rarely succesful since its early day success.) I played it cause my crowd wouldnt get on the floor using the previous yrs playlist as a guide. I threw it on sarcastically thinking I'm walking the Dinosaur may as well play the song. It packed the floor followed by ''I Wanna Be A Cowboy...............
barry stamper 01-21-2008, 04:24 PM Jon i wanna be a cowboy was one of my fav's as a teenager.
I love the line, my name Ted and one day I'll be dead yo yo. (barry moves on to the next thread ...with that song in his head.....Yippie Yippie yo yo

I didn't know the post was specific to weddings. I would still play sexyback at a wedding, but for a private event i would say no.
It gets into more than what is a floor clearing song. Most of my non-wedding events are teen birthdays and 20- 30 something parties, so audience takes big consideration into the post.
I did play stronger toward the end of 2007 and it worked quite well. Again my average Bride and Groom age is 21 to 30.

LOL and that one filled the floor for me Saturday night! :sqeek:
Just goes to show, what works one time may not work the next and vice-versa.
(Not familiar with "Flashing Lights" - remember, I'm and old guy:sqerr:)

I nominate THIS POST as Post of the Year.... as long as that part about #4 is sarcasm.
jokerswild 01-22-2008, 03:58 AM Ok Disco Duck is offically added to one of my many guilty pleasures.... cause it just puts a smile on my face when I hear it....
You know I bought the #1 Disco hits CD because this track was on it.... I had to even special order it cause nobody had the CD of course there were other hits on the cd including Funky Town... but I bought the CD for that song in particular... I just like it.... don't know why but I do....
sparkieg 01-22-2008, 04:41 AM Sometimes in the club world, you HAVE to know when to clear the floor - for the sake of the bartenders. For instance, a couple of years ago when I was doing weekends at The Red Rooster here in Winston, and it was THE place to be on the weekends, sometimes I HAD to play something that I knew would clear the floor just so the bars would do some business.
Then again, a couple of times when I intentionally tried clearing the floor with a slow dance tune in the middle of a fast or upbeat set, it back-fired......those that had been at the bar would grab someone and pack the dance floor along with those already on the floor.
I apologized at the end of the night to all of the folks working the bars, that I really tried to help them make some money with the intentional turning of the floor, but they all said the same thing - "We know that's what you were trying to do - and it's appreciated!" The crowd just came to dance those couple of nights instead of drink, and even the owner was impressed with the fact that I kept the floor filled the entire night.
Ahhhhhh, memories........
sparkieg 01-22-2008, 04:44 AM There was this one time, that I got on the mic and told the crowd that if they didn't simmer down (this was at a private party) that I was gonna play The Partridge Family's entire album....... I wish you could have seen the looks of horror on some of their faces.......it was just priceless.......
DjDennis 01-22-2008, 09:54 AM Actually Barry if I try real hard I might remember like 20 or so years ago I might have done it but that is hard to recall
I do get shows that start very slow no matter what song I play they never get up (till they get a few drinks in them)
so not really Barry ... I might have to really do some digging in the sheets I keep and see what they say about what song was a fizzer...
now ya got me thinking see I have always been very prepared for my shows and do extra research on what other guests want at the start of a show... it might be me who knows,
I never say I am the BEST Dj around, but in say the last 4x years I havent really even had a bad show at all happen, maybe some 10x-20x years ago I would have had a few bad ones, but every so often I might, so not much else I can really tell you sorry...
Ron Auger 01-24-2008, 10:27 AM Rob,
Do you mix in from Afternoon Delight into Disco Duck?:sqwink:
I had a wedding a few months ago and cleard the dance floor with "Livin on a Prayer". They told me the crowd was a Disco group. I should have believed them. The Bee Gee's took care of that right away.
