Karaoke songs you wish would die a horrible, painful death

You know the ones i'm talking about.. Those songs that get sung so often, and almost always very badly, that it makes you want to strangle the person with a mic cord...

Here's my list:

1. Summer Nights.. *if someone asks me to sing this with them, I usually change the last phrase from "Wonder what she's doing now" to "Wonder WHO she's doing now" just to be different..

2. My Way by Frank Sinatra.. The only version I will sing is the sex pistols version.

3. Picture by Kid Rock & Sheryl crow..

4. Don't let your son go down on me... err I mean don't let THE sun... sorry that's my own bad version..

take care all

When I get tired of them I ban them.

Currently Banned at all of my shows:

Picture
Paradise By Dashboard

Before He Cheats is getting there.

I have over 20,000 unique songs people can find something else.

I can understand "Picture" because its a crappy song.

I can also understand PBTDbL by Meatloaf......that's like giving someone 2 songs (isn't that an 8 minute song?)

But the act of banning "Before He Cheats" would be tantamount to career suicide. All it takes is one good-looking chick singer to badmouth your establishment because you wouldn't let her sing her fave.

(That is one of Allie's favorite pop songs right now).

You *could* require that they know the words B4 singing it. Its not an easy song for first-timers. Its a crappy song when its not a quality singer up there.....

Number one is a gimme: The often yowled, sometimes screamed, but NEVER sung- and ALWAYS by more than 4....Paradise by the ( please stick a freakin' ice pick in both my ears) Dashboard dam Light

#2 is Hotel California....( please make it stop? please?)

#3 is virtually anything from G N' R simply because almost no one does them well.

#4 is Wind Beneath My Wings, only because anytime someone sings it someone died. .....and dammit, it makes me misty :sqembarrassed:

# 4 - Kid Rock / Sheryl Crow - Picture

# 3 - B-52's - Love Shack

Is it really right to ban any song though? Karaoke is not American Idol, who gives a rats ass if we like the song, or if the singer sings it bad? We're there to give them what *they* want.

As long as they buy drinks / tip ya / pay thier buck. Understand what I'm sayin? I had to hear Total Eclipse of the Heart and Nothin but a G thang TWICE last night, but the people doing thier songs paid, and I serviced them.

I'm doing the right thing right? riGHT?

One more thing,

Hearing songs you're sick of hearing is part of karaoke. Unless you're some kind of pussy ass wimp KJ who can't take it.

Well it time to think about the masses.

The majority of the people in the bar don't want to hear a song twice in a night or a song that sucks.

If the place is full of energy I will put the no slow or country song rule in effect. My job is to make the bar the most money possible and I do that every week. I been at all the same places over 3 years and the bar sales beat or match projected every week.

I run karaoke, but my shows are for people that like to have a good time. Fun games, and you get to sing a song or two. If you want to sing slow boring music you can go to some other karaoke night.

I take it with arms wide open and that million dollar smile my Momma gave me. The secret is to turn down ones hearing aid at the opportune time.

Cam you go Dawg!!! Rock N Roll. Toqer I also agree with you. Its issues like these that allowed me to adjust my lineup to enhance the energy when possible and I made my singers aware of the rule. No more than two Ballads in a row.

Once again.......If a good looking SWF is asking to sing "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood....my inclination would be to allow it, even if its already been sung that nite.

I'm nowhere near being sick of Before He Cheats. Some gals sang it last night and I enjoyed it. I'm getting tired of New York, New York(was one of my favorites), Paradise By The Dashboard Light(yuk, yuk, yuk), Mac The Knife(used to like it), Love On The Rocks(too slow and too depressing), Desperado, Hotel California, Achy Breaky Heart, Chatahoochee and a few others I can't think of right now, seems like there are a bunch.

As far as banning, near the end of the night I usually take over from the guy who swaps the discs in and out(this guy isn't a KJ, he's just a disc swapper) at the place I go to all the time. At the very end of the night a regular at the bar wanted to sing "She Bangs" and "I said no way, that song is banned". I had a big smile on my face and I was nice about it, but there is no way I was gonna let him sing that. William Hung killed that song for me. Maybe I'm wrong . . .Maybe I'm a bad, bad man . . .

OF COURSE you're right! This is about songs we'd LIKE to ban ( and PBTDB is gonna send me postal one o' these days :sqerr:), not WOULD ban...at least that's what I'm posting about. The only exception is if a song comes up twice it won't be in the same rotation.

Songs I hate at karaoke:

ALL Meatloaf. I like the originals, but everyone does Meatloaf all the time and they go for too long.
I would do anything for love is the most annoying for me.

I hate love shack, it's ****. The end.

All grease songs are crap 'cuz they get done so often.

That's about it as far as annoying stuff goes, some people have annoying voices, making anything they sing painful.. but it's not the songs fault.

Love Shack and all GREASE songs are arguably the songs fault.

Actually I think I will revise my original list to include "Any song that is over 5 minutes"

I don't know about the rest of you but it seems the longer a song is, the more likely it seems to attract very bad singers.. :sqerr:

There have been a few notible exceptions at my karaoke, but not many.

Not that I get a lot of bad singers, but the one thing I like about the majority of people who come to my show, is they know how to pick songs that are suited to their voice and are extremely comfortable with.

I agree with the over 5 minute thing.

..definately puts people off, people are there to have a good time.. not watch some self-indulgent bastard waste everyones time..
