Stairway To HeavenThe Wizard Of OZ 01-24-2008, 11:13 PM Any KJs get requests for this song? Anyone sing it? Very long song. . . toqer 01-24-2008, 11:43 PM I consider all long songs my "Cigarette Break" songs. kayleigh 01-25-2008, 02:13 AM Actually, yes. I had a regular once who wanted to sing the song, but couldn't hit the high note in the bridge towards the end of the song, so he asked me to sing it. We had fun. :D Jeff Romard 01-25-2008, 03:01 AM We used to have a guy when I did Karaoke years ago who did this one every night we played. Ive seen alot do it over the years but I have yet to see one who dosen't mumble through the words at some point in the song toqer 01-25-2008, 04:15 AM I just heard a great cig break song right now, DKK paradise by the dashboard light. Full 8 minutes of smoke a marlboro and balance your checkbook. Jon Tuck 01-25-2008, 04:25 AM I have yet to have it requested thus far. Stogie what songs do you prefer singing? DJMC 01-25-2008, 01:37 PM "American Pie" is the one bathroom-break song that seems to come up frequently. I only recall Stairway to Heaven being sung one time. jclaydon 01-25-2008, 02:06 PM The only time my Kj friend in Vancouver would let someone sing a song like Stairway or American pie was if he needed to go to the nearest bank machine which was like 3 blocks away. And once, he had a flat tire but he was slightly late for his show so didn't have time to fix the tire AND set up so he left it.. Luckily somone requested Stairway to Heaven so he got to fix the flat before he had to go home.. :sqlaugh: -James DJ Cam 01-25-2008, 02:12 PM Once or twice. Not very often. November Rain seems to be the long one as of late. 9 min Harryoke 01-26-2008, 01:08 PM Stairway used to get sung a lot...if the person were really trashed or painful to listen to, I would use the edited version on the Druid label....otherwise, no problem using the full version. It is one of those songs that if it is being performed halfway decently, the people actually enjoy it, but if it is being done poorly it makes you suicidal, LOL... Like American Pie or PBTDL... The Wizard Of OZ 01-26-2008, 03:04 PM I was just wondering about this topic because I've never seen anyone sing STH when I've been out for Karaoke. I like the song and I can sing the majority of it until it gets really high towards the end. I'm planning on performing it and I'll just fade the last part of the song out before the high pitched finale. If not many people at Karaoke sing this song then that's a good thing. I'm trying to not have too much cheese in my act. I want to keep things interesting and as fresh as possible. I'm always looking for good songs that people haven't heard lately or aren't familiar with. IMO if a song has a pleasing melody/sound/instrumental quality and it's sung well, people will like it whether they know it or not. People like what they know, but I don't want to perform the same songs that everyone else is doing or that people hear on the radio to the point that they are sick of them. I tried some Queen songs that I like and NO WAY! Way too high for me, too bad, a lot of people like Queen. Oh well, gotta do what you can and not worry about what you can't. rictrax 01-26-2008, 03:57 PM I just heard a great cig break song right now, DKK paradise by the dashboard light. Full 8 minutes of smoke a marlboro and balance your checkbook. PLEEEEASE.....you're bringing back terrible memories of Karaoke days gone by! Now I'll have to go back to therapy! :sqerr: Thanks a lot, :sqembarrassed: Rick The Wizard Of OZ 01-26-2008, 04:24 PM Paradise By The Dashboard Light is by far one of my least favorite songs right now and one that seems to be pretty popular. The people singing it always have a good time and then crowd seems to like ti too. Way too long for my taste. Jon Tuck 01-27-2008, 03:48 AM When I get a steady gig I will qualify to comment. djkenowens 01-27-2008, 11:22 AM no on the stairway to heaven, I've had a few attempts at paradise by the dashboard light by really paid duets though... american pie I've had sung quite a bit though and it's one in my list as well for filler. now keep in mind I should say used to be in my list, I haven't been on the road for over a year now, but I keep hearing that I need to un-retire and get back into the biz. but after over 25 years, it's nice to have saturday nights to watch a movie. I go out once in a while, but when i do, i see why people want to get me back on the block... bad sound, bad entertainment, bad song selection... what has happened to this business, lol. that's dj'ing as well by the way. i saw a guy a few weeks ago running dual 15 cabinets whose bass was so distorted it wasn't even funny... wanted to help him eq, but figured he wouldn't have appreciated the help and it was his show, so i just sucked it up and had another beer. Harryoke 01-27-2008, 12:08 PM I like the song and I can sing the majority of it until it gets really high towards the end. I'm planning on performing it and I'll just fade the last part of the song out before the high pitched finale. Speaking as a music fan and singer, dont fade the last part. If you are investing the time to sing the first, the listeners appreciating the song would not be wanting to hear the last part cut off...that is musical blasphemy. Rather, sing it, but instead of emulating Robert Plants nasal high voice, sing it in your natural voice...start with your speaking voice, then sing it, yet stay in key. You will find rather than attacking the high not and missing, you will still be performing the song and not editing it. You can sing ANY song using this method. The Wizard Of OZ 01-27-2008, 04:06 PM I sang Stairway To Heaven last night for the first time in public. I waited until the very last song of the night when almost everyone was gone except people I know really well(it was late). I lowered the key, I think 2 half steps(it's a little hazy now). Finally I came to the dreaded end of the song and no way, no how I could sing it(I tried anyways). Definitely need to practice that song a bit more. Next time I'm going to try Harryoke's method which I have tried with other songs that are too high for me, I just go down an octave lower. Most likely I'll just let the music play and not sing since that part is instrumentally very good. I started to do that last night with Suite Madam Blue by Styx which is one of my current favorite songs to sing. After a longish instrumental break the last part of the song is repeats America, America over and over. I really don't like to sing that part so I'm going to just put the mic down and let the music play to the end in the future. The people last night insisted that I finish the song, but after that, no more. I believe more and more that a performer needs to take some creative license and make songs fit their voice and performance style. I started out trying to be exactly like the original version on every song. Now I'm letting my own style and personality come through a little bit as I become more comfortable. Carolyn 01-27-2008, 07:45 PM Totally agree with that Wizard, you have to make each song your own, because when you are singing it is your own. I change every single song I sing to make it my own, sometimes including changing the words as well. The Wizard Of OZ 01-27-2008, 08:44 PM Funny you should say that Carolyn, I change some words occasionally for comic relief or to make a song easier to sing or if I just don't like the words. Jon Tuck 01-27-2008, 09:17 PM I am known to sing Secret Asian Man with an Asian friend of mine. jclaydon 01-27-2008, 11:28 PM i change the words to karaoke songs all the time.. Mostly because all my really close friends have the same warped sense of humor.. some examples.. summer nights "Wonder who she's doing now" My way by frank sinatra "The record shows, this song blows, yes I'll sing it my way" elton john - "Don't let your son go down on me" paradise by the dashboard light "i was long ago, it was far away.. it was so much bigger than it is today" i'd better stop before the FCC shows up.. :sqeek: goodnight all, -James Kirby Ball 01-28-2008, 01:19 AM Heard a couple of DJ/KJ people attempt to sing today at a Bridal show. They now have ruined for me the following songs......: Grease Megamix Ticket To Ride Just The Way You Are.... If I would have had a gun, they'd all been dead!:sqeek: The Wizard Of OZ 01-28-2008, 01:25 AM That's a shame. Kirby Ball 01-28-2008, 01:27 AM That's a shame. What, that I didn't have a gun? :sqeek::sqerr::sqwink::sqfrown: | |
