The Wizard Of OZ 01-28-2008, 12:32 AM Don't know how many of you were aware that Amazon.com is now offering Soundchoice Karaoke tracks for 89 cents each? I know a lot of you folks are old timers and you already have huge Karaoke collections, but for a young whippersnapper like me just getting into the bidness this is a big deal.
Instead of buying a bunch of discs with tons of songs that I don't want, I can buy just what I want. I would much rather spend $500 and get 500 songs that I want than spend $3,000-$5,000 and have a huge collection mostly of songs no one wants to sing. I hope they eventually offer other Karaoke manufacturers too. I am also going to get a bunch of tracks from Tricerasoft. They have some very good quality recordings. This is a very good development for me.
Jon Tuck 01-28-2008, 12:34 AM Stogie thanks for the tip. Not sure if us GWN'ies can gain access to them though. I will have to check into it.
Are you sure they come with the CD+G track?
So far, the online downloads of SC (at emusic.com, for example) have been audio-only.
And, I built my collection of SC exactly how you described, for just about 70 cents a song:
Foundation 1 (450 songs) was on sale for $350 at PSSL (this was 4 years ago). I got a $50 rebate and bought the Foundation 2 (450 songs) for a net cost of $300. (Glad I did this, because F-2 is now out-of-print)
Recently, I bought 3 Bricks (360 songs) and one Mortar (12 Spotlights= 150 non-duplicate songs) for a total cost of $493.00.
My entire cost of 1,410 songs: just over $1000. All SC, and very few crap songs because I have cherry-picked their catalog!
The Wizard Of OZ 01-28-2008, 12:57 AM Sorry, I meant to insert the link and I forgot:

The Wizard Of OZ 01-28-2008, 01:14 AM I just went back and saw that there are other manufacturers, not just Soundchoice.
jokerswild 01-28-2008, 01:27 AM From Amazon's site "Please note that karaoke MP3s do not contain lyrics or graphics."
Jon Tuck 01-28-2008, 01:29 AM so get the graphics maker and make your own screen changes.
jokerswild 01-28-2008, 01:43 AM so get the graphics maker and make your own screen changes.
Yuk do ya know what a PITA that would be.... LOL!!!!:sqlaugh:
The Wizard Of OZ 01-28-2008, 02:41 AM Funny I was back looking at the listings at amazon and just noticed that there are no graphics or lyrics like y'all have just observed. That sucks. I can print up the lyrics and put them on a music stand, but that doesn't help people if I'm hosting Karaoke. Well, back to the drawing board.
Jon Tuck 01-28-2008, 02:54 AM There is a program out there one of the regulars can pipe in and direct you Stogie. It allows you to create the lyrical portion.
When you reach 1500+ songs.....Its getting harder and harder to attain that magic 80 cents per song figure.
I've got another 12 discs on my "Wish List" at SC web site......each one of these Spolight issues have 2 or 3 duplicates (usually ones that are already on Foundation 2 or on one of my Bricks).
On 12 CDG's I can expect 144-150 new songs. (At $179, with Club membership....that equates to $1.25 per song).
jokerswild 01-28-2008, 01:50 PM You can get them down to as low as .99 cents per song at www.tricerasoft.com
Who cares about SC... they aren't the end all to be all of karaoke... I really don't care what some "professional" singers say... just because "one" singer prefers SC doesn't mean that it's necessarily the best product or even a particular version of a song from them is the best... it all boils down to singer preference and more importantly the KJ's willingness to have a variety of flavors for their singers to choose from....
Example I have 4 versions of Under The Boardwalk... three are relatively the same but the fourth is an upbeat version... and guess what... it's my KJ Tools version.... frankly I think it's better than the SC versions I've heard over the years... which is why I haven't saught out the SC version... of course if a singer does request it I will get it for them for the next show.
Rob.....Its not just Allie who's made this preference. My club owner ('99-'06) tried Karaoke for 6 months back in '01 or '02....he bought SC (F 1, Bricks 1-3) back then on the recommendation of Gary, our bartender. Gary is a professional actor and singer, very qualified to make this assessment.
SC is clearly the best....overall its like Toyota.....reliable and dependable.
jokerswild 01-28-2008, 02:28 PM you're missing my point.... that's two people... I really could careless if he was a Golden Globe or even an Oscar winner... his opinion is squat compared to thousands of singers whos preferences are as varied as there are people in the world....
SC is good I'll give you that... but it is not necessarily the best or the only good version available....
I'm sorry that you can't see this... for what it is. I have lots of sound choice discs... and I have lots of others as well... I like sound choice don't get me wrong... but this snobbery saying that it's the only brand that does a great job at making karaoke is crap and you know it.
I'm saying you can buy Ford, you can buy Chevy, or Nissan, or Mazda......but SC is clearly the Toyota of the bunch. Not saying that any particular model of Ford or Chevy is bad, as there are gems in all of the other car brands.
Yet, Toyota is consistently the most reliable and fuel efficient of all the auto manufacturers. Consider that a non-hybrid Toyota Avalon (with a 3.5 liter V-6 engine) gets 28-30 hwy mpg.
My preference for SC is not snobbery, its based on the opinions of singing amateurs & professionals who I've known personally over the years.
jokerswild 01-28-2008, 03:14 PM Your entitled to your opinion no matter how slanted it is....
It is snobbery... when you can't see the tree for the forest... I'm not discounting the opinions of these "professionals" you say swear by SC... what I'm saying is turning a blind eye to other brands just because they don't carry the SC lable is snobbery...
And quit with the car analogies.... that is no comparison what so ever.... because even Toyota has had it's share of klinkers and there for doesn't mean its the best manufature of cars.
Just like SC has klinkers... so do other brands... the point is there is other music out there that is as good or better than SC and limiting yourself to just one brand of karaoke is basically like tying one had behind your back and then trying to clap....
jclaydon 01-29-2008, 03:59 AM Everyone has thier own personal preference. My mom had a volkswagon station wagon that lasted 26 YEARS before she had to replace it. My Dad has a '69 Firebird and it still runs, altho he definately didn't drive it as much as my mom drove the stationwagon.. Still that's nearly 40 years old. Show me a car built by Toyota that has lasted that long.. :sqwink:
If i had the money, I'd get myself a nice cheap but reliable Kia.. :)
Or maybe a subaru.. but that's beside the point..
Well i do like Soundchoice, BUT they do have faults.. I will repost a post of mine from another thread to make my point..
"Soundchoice isn't the be all and end all of karaoke like they would have us believe.. There are some things they are not good at, and one of those things is background vocals. Sometimes they are there when they shouldn't be, but most of the time they AREN"T there when they should be.
Case in point, listen to ANY track made by soundchoice for the Everly Brothers. The trademark sound that the Everly brothers make is that their recordings sound like at least 4 or more people are singing from two voices yet i have yet to find any recording made by soundchoice that has ANY background vocals.
The zoom disc i have of them however, has 26 tracks 13 songs with the background vocals and the same thirteen tracks without and this is more songs that any other disc i have found too...
Also, soundchoice uses VERY cheap media.. Don't believe me, hold up one of their discs to the light.. it will become very transparent *i mean you can see right thru it*. Qaulity media doesn't do that.
Plus there replacement policy was great.. but they have discontinued about 80% of their older spolight series.. So if anything older breaks, you're basically SOL.
Don't get me wrong, I love soundchoice, but there are discs out there that are just as good or better."
