I was really pleased when I figured this out as it saved me about £50 since I already have a cheap Behringer usb soundcard and I now don't need to go out and buy the Numark DJIO or something else like that.
These are the instructions for Traktor, but I'd imagine that it'd be configured in a similar way in most applications, just adjust points 4 onwards to suit.
An aside: you need to have your internal soundcard set as your default audio device before attempting this!
1) Go to asio4all.com and download/install the program for your OS
2) Plug in your USB/Firewire interface
3) Open ASIO4All and make sure that the interface (NOT your internal card) is disabled (for some reason it won't register in Traktor at this point)
4) Close ASIO4All and open Traktor
5) Open the preferences menu, and go to Audio Setup>Soundcard and select ASIO4All
6) Click "Control Panel" to re-open ASIO4All
7) Now depending on your configuration, ASIO4All may have enabled your interface at this point. For my Behringer, I have to go to the advanced menu and enable it manually. Either way the device needs to be enabled.
8) Go back to the Traktor preferences and click Apply
9) Now both your device and internal soundcard should be available for routing in the audio setup menu with Traktor.
I use my laptop's headphone out to connect to a channel in another mixer that's in turn connected to a set of studio monitors and two Pioneer CDJ-800s, reason being that the soundcard in my laptop is much much better than the Behringer. I then use the headphone out of the Behringer to hook up my headphones for pre-listening.
One point to note: set the latency as low as your laptop and software can handle. I was running at 11.5ms latency on traktor and that led to the headphones being out of sync with the monitor. I was used to it, as I'd listen to the mix in the headphones before bringing the crossfader across. My mate, however, was used to having one ear in the headphone and the other listening to the monitor to judge the sync of the tracks and it took him a while to notice what was going on.
Anyway, hope this is useful.
