Right before NAMM, I got another EMU1820. EMU's are awesome, they got some decent near real time (less than 2ms latency) effects. Only sad part is the patchmix application that comes with it doesn't allow for midi control over effect levels.

Using it with the Reaper DAW does allow this, though in a roundabout way. Up until yesterday I had been doing it the wrong way (it's still worked for the last year though)

I just figured out how to do it the right way, i'm super happy. So super happy i'm going to share.

In patchmix i've dropped 3 ASIO sends, but we'll just play with the first one ASIO 1 & 2. This creates new ASIO output channels for the mic. I also "Create New Strip" and create a strip for the ASIO send I just created (in this case, ASIO 1 & 2) We'll name this strip Reverb.

Switch back to REAPER

Create a track with Dock A as the source. Click on the IO button, add a hardware send to Reverb. Also uncheck send to main is optional, try it with, and without, see which you like better.

Now switch back to patchmix and drop reverb on the reverb strip. Switch back to reaper and adjust the track volume.

You can now map midi knobs to the track volume, and adjust damn close to realtime effects.

OK.. Why do I have 3 tracks in reaper and 3 ASIO sends?

You will need to create a send for every effect you want to control levels on. Right now I have an effect that sounds like "Sexyback" AM fidelity, a nice verb, and a delay.
