Does anyone know of any lightscribe dvd burner that is gaurunteed to be CDG compatible? I'm not just talking about *will it rip CDG properly* I'm talking about a drive that will properly read and write the subcode data on a CDG disc. In other words, i could also use the same drive to play the discs if I needed to.

Pardon my ignorance as I don't know much about the CD-G format, generally speaking hardware is fairly "dumb" and just does what the software tells it to do. In other words as long as you have a good burning program that is able to encode and send CD-G data to the burner properly you shouldn't have an issue.

LightScribe adds something else to the equation, you need a burning application that can both write CD-G data and LightScribe the disc this may limit you to 1 or 2 choices unless there is a separate LightScribe utility available.

Edit:

A quick Google revealed this: http://web.ncf.ca/aa571/cdgfaq.htm take a look at the bottom of the page "Copying CD-G Discs"

Hope it helps. :)

Any good software can write a decent CDG disc as long as it supports a writing protacol called DAO *disc at once*

but for a drive to be TRULY called compatible, it must fully support reading and writing of what is called subcode data.

The way you can tell is if you can read or burn individual karaoke tracks.

90% of the hardware made will not support this properly.

Plextor used to be a pretty sure bet, but they stopped posting info on this and they currently don't make a lightscribe drive anyway.

Thanks anyway

I can't say for creating, but I've had very good luck with the LG Super_Multi series of Drives for reading CD+G discs.

I have a GSA-H10L and another I'm not certain of the model number... Possibly the GSA-H60L... both replaced 2 Plextor drives that failed prematurely. I've been very happy with the resulting CD+G imports to Ots studio with these drives.

I'm not sure what the official CD+G capabilities for these drives are.

PowerKaraoke and MTU both have a list of drives they are compatible with and they also sell drives that they guarantee will work with their software. Based on what I've read, these two programs are the best you can buy.

The older Plextor drives such as the 716 model which can be external or internal and a couple other older plextors are the only drives I can think of that will rip, write and read cdg allowing you to convert, burn, or play like a cdg with plugins for winamp for example CDG Renerer. by Dro

I have a LiteOn drive that will do everything except playback of the lyrics directly from the disc.

I know I've said it in other threads, but MTU's Microstudio software will do a lot of stuff. I have to say, though, that I haven't tried it on my non-karaoke computer for CDG playback (my karaoke hosting system has a Plextor 716; my home system has just a plain-Jane DVD/CD burner). Let me test that when I get home & I'll post an update.

I just tested Microstudio with my standard DVD player - the CDG played OK. So, at least with that program, you shouldn't require a burner that specifically reads CD subcode.

I wouldn't recommend Microstudio for show hosting, but I've used it to play the odd CDG for customers who'd bring in their own disks.
