VoxDisc ~ A New Revolution

rlelek

As some of you have already known, I started a new business entitled...

"VOXDISC"

Many don't know exactly WHAT "VoxDisc" is, but I can assure you, you soon will.
VoxDisc is essentially the new competitor for Netflix and Gamefly, but don't let that fool you. This company will push the envelope (haha...literally) for online rental services.

I have MANY new ideas and improvements over the currently offered services.
I tried the services and saw so many grounds for improvement. So here I go, with my friends and family, taking a crack at it.

Please let me know what you think of not only this site, but the idea in general.

Even if it is negative, I would love to hear it!
There are indeed, two sides to every story.

Hi Ryan,

I'm not sure I could give you an honest critique without more content.

Right now, based on your website, there would be nothing that would make me choose your service over Netflix or Gamefly. It just doesn't have any personality, very plain.

I would imagine you're going to have to have alot of resources (money) to upset an established online service.

You are talking about competing with multi-million dollar companies.

NetFlix and Gamefly have cornered the market. I'm sorry but without tons of capital you will never be able to compete. Even Blockbuster online isn't competing.

this will be just local for now...

however, the 15+ improvements should win over at least a few customers.
also, there is a particular advertisement strategy i am going after.

but you are both right. it would take plenty of $$$ to compete, at least on a national scale.

as for the website, I agree! the plain has to go.
I just finished a login feature for other account management, and plan on implementing it this weekend.

Again, i just have a small audience for now. 1% of netflix alone will more than satisfy me! (you should crunch the numbers on that one, netflix has a LOT of people)

Thank you all for your comments!
I shall redesign the site and repost it!

Its a good concept, but will take years of work and lots of $$$ again. I applaud you for tacking it on, and keep it up!

In any case if you take a small pice of market in numbers will be a big buck for you.Be brave and go with head true the wall.

I kept getting an invalid account error.

It looks like a good site, but in reality to please people and have a successful company you will need lots of DVDs, a ****load to be correct. I'd consider getting someone to invest, or a loan to get yourself started. I know its risky, but your already on the right track.

yes, absolutely!

once the website is complete, it is off to the bank!
I will be presenting a powerpoint-like presentation (Except opensource of course) with a little bit of flash integrated.

There are already signs of interest among the community.

Be on the lookout June 2008, and thank you for looking at the site!

You better improve the quality of all the images. Everything will have to be crisp and fresh looking.

02-26-2008, 04:42 PM
what images are you talking about?

I see the covers are a little blurry, and yes, they will need improvement, but is there anything else like the logos?

I'd just like to clarify, so I can fix this issue

I'm talking about the cover images, they are more than a little blurry. I'm also seeing alot of missing images. (box with red X)

Excuse me, Mr Stamper, I was only offering helpful advise. I'm sure Rlelek wants to make this a success and I want that for him too. If we just keep patting him on the back and he takes a half-ass looking product to the bank, they'll push him to the curb.

Okay everyone, thank you for the feedback!

No need to fight now...
Just a quick clarification on what's going on...

I resized the images, and perhaps that is what made them blurry, I'll investigate this further. As far as those red X's, those are intended to be there for the time being. That is just my way of knowing what shows up when there is no image, and just a way for me to see what needs to be worked on. They are there because the only two movies/games in my database are already shown. Because the PHP code is told to display~4, that's why there are the x's (I haven't uploaded and alt image yet).

I work on this 8 hours at least a day, so any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone, and keep the comments coming!

Alright, I spent a good portion of my day yesterday on optimizing the site.

Logins now WORK!
Here's one I created for you all to test.

As do new sign-ups. However, they are under a qualification of ZIP code to ensure the member is in our area of coverage. If your ZIP doesnt work use "46375" Schererville Indiana's Zip Code. I'll be adding plenty of zips today, so expect yours there in the future!

I added icons to the menu bar. Please throw some comments in on that.

I'll be adding movies soon, the "search" and "film_detail" features are not up yet, and neither are the genres on the menu bar, because no movies are posted yet.

I'll continue working on it.

Thanks everyone for your help!!!

Okay,
VoxDisc has been picking up some speed...

The logo is nearing the finish line and the layout for the site is getting much much better, but I'm sure you all can find something wrong with it! Try as I might to get everything correct, nothing is perfect and there is always room for improvement.

Video game support has been added. I haven't gotten around to adding any games yet, but once I do, the game pages should look rather similar to those of DVDs and Blu-ray.

If you'd like to see the new "VoxList" feature, which is a *live* title queue, just log in...

Haven't gotten around to the search feature yet, but i'll try to get it by the end of this week...

Hope to have the whole site done by March 31, in full working order.

Thanks!

I see the movies portion, but what about the games?
I clicked on the tab, and all I saw was the ability to purchase games, not rent them.

Also, it's too busy, in my opinion anyway. With all the ads and other stuff floating around, It's a little difficult to locate exactly what I'm looking for.

What I'm trying to do is slightly different than this, provided they do not rent games. I want users to experience a clutter free website, with only the essentials, and well placed at that. Why? Many people who are just starting to use the internet (yes, there are some) are so scared by sites, it's insane. Even I have an *Extremely* difficult time navigating IBM's site. Surprising isn't it? Too busy, and I cannot locate anything as far as support pages go without google. All I'm saying is, using the internet should not be about selfish ads posted EVERYWHERE, but rather about making the experience as realistic as possible.

Granted, ODJT has ads, but that is entirely understandable. It is a free, clean, well developed site, and it has to support itself somehow. But if you pay for a subscription to service, should you really see ads? Maybe I'm crazy...

Not to attack you or the site you posted, everyone's vision of perfection is different. Mine's just a little more extreme to some than others. Also, My site is far from perfect as anything and everything can be improved, but it doesn't look near what I want it to yet.

However, the site listed above courtesy of DJDennis, is another player in the online rental game. Good news! If they can make it, why not anyone else?

All I'm saying is this...
In a world of business and money, why do people forget about the consumer?

DjDennis
04-05-2008, 02:36 AM
well rlelek as you can see thats what happens here

changes all the time...
I have local Video stores that do all this and more from hiring games , buying them etc all the time
as the technology changes so does things at the stores

the local online thing here is dead as it cost more for transport than anything

just hope you get what you need

Alright, VoxDisc is about a month from launch...

~ Initiate "Crunch Time" ~

Here's an update of the styling... the orange color I posted in another thread, with the new "non-boring" flash header. Soon to add the rounded rectangles (underneath the content) for contrast.

Also, things are becoming W3C validated (HTML 4.01 Strict). In case you don't see the value of validation of web pages, it's for cross-browser performance as well as better access for people with disabilities.

Here are the links!

When Mcdonalds came out and became a giant....did everyone else say...oh we cant compete?? Heck no!

When I started my DJ business, and there were 8 other DJ companies to worry about...did I throw my hands up?? Heck no!

And right now.....I would rank myself #2 in our area.....based on bookings and services! I rank another competitor #1 since he has been doing it for 20 yrs, and he has multi-oped! Hes a great guy, and its still going to take a few more years to gain on him......but I already am gaining day by day!

So ya.....dont give up.....chip a little by a little on those giants....and even if you dont become the "giant" settle for what you get! Because....
YES.....THERE IS MONEY TO BE MADE!!"" Dont worry about that!

As soon as your doubt your plan...will be the day you dont become sucessful...."TRUST ME ON THIS ONE!"

Good Luck..I personally use Blockbuster online which is now as big as Netflix here is a little synposis from an article on Helium.com:
So which company is better, Blockbuster Online DVD rental service or Netflix? It is probably safe for now to say that Blockbuster is still in the lead. However, at the same time, as Netflix is able to develop their systems and programs a bit more tightly and more advanced technology in general becomes available to computer authorities, they very well may be on to something with this instant DVD watching approach. One can only see in time. In the meanwhile, though, both Blockbuster Online and Netflix do a fine job of serving their customers with the latest and greatest popular and obscure films through readily available options of decent prices. So no matter which company you feel comfortable with, there is no doubt that you are still renting your DVDs through a company of great quality and a future of cutting edge ambitions.

rlelek
04-27-2008, 02:29 PM
Thanks for that bestdjinfl!

Yes, blockbuster may still be in the lead, but they are falling in rank rapidly. Every day netflix will gain on them.

This industry is still in its infancy, so now is the time to jump on the ball! But everyone must differentiate themselves in some way. VoxDisc isn't Netflix, Gamefly, or Blockbuster and while that may seem like common sense, many people want to imitate, rather than be who they really are.

If everyone did the same thing, what fun would there be? VoxDisc aims to address some issues and problems of Gamefly more than Netflix. Many people dislike Gamefly, but other love it. Netflix is usually 95% positive in its reviews. Although, if you subscribed to both of these services, you have 2 bills to pay, and 2 accounts to manage.

Consolidate! Spending less at VoxDisc because everything is on one bill, saves time and hassle (or maybe I'm wrong) and that is just one of the 15+ improvements VoxDisc will make.

"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

Watch out Netflix/Gamefly :0

Well, after bloody knuckles from typing so long,
I think we have a winner.

VoxDisc is not entirely complete, but from what is available now, it sure does look promising.....

The layout was carefully designed for ease of use, and the code, tested multiple times.
So here it is...

www.voxdisc.com

Please share your thoughts honestly! I really would like to hear them, good or bad.
Also, some links/tabs may not take you anywhere, I am still working on those :D
And the White-boxed graphics? Those have to be updated!
All in good time....

Randy A
07-17-2008, 10:59 AM
That is much improved!!

A couple of things. I don't like that you have things aligned to the left when clicking on a release. To much empty space on the right.

I'd personally have all the preview boxes the same size and add some more space between the rows and add a light divider line.

What would it look like bringing your VOX logo down out of the navigation area. Almost looks a little to busy and cluttered up there and doesn't really stand out. Thinking about advertising spaces you could eventually offer, maybe pulling it down to the left of 'New Releases' and then maybe in the future you could offer some sort of banner ad space to the right.

Just some thoughts. But, it has come a long ways.
