I saw a 6ft piece of triangle vertical truss at chealights. However, I saw the WEIGHT listed as 75lbs.

Could that be right?????

Isn't a vertical truss sort of "lightweight"?

It all depends what material the truss is made from. Now if it's aluminum, you would expect it to be lightweight.

The truss you refer to must be an awfully strong piece to weigh in at 75 lbs.

Harry, I believe that is a misprint...

It's gotta be a misprint. 75 pounds... that's around the weight of a dually 15" poplar plywood cabinet. I shouldn't think a 6' section of truss would weigh that much.

If you look at the description the real weight is in it, the other weight is the one they use for shipping cost calculations. I've heard (after I bought mine), that if you question the higher weight they will adjust the shipping cost. The higher weight is due to the size makes the shipping cost higher, but I think theirs is too high.

FYI. UPS has three oversized levels.

1 - When length and girth exceed 84" you are charged for 30 pounds of freight

2 - When length and girth exceed 108" you are charged for 70 pounds of freight

3 - When length and girth exceed 130" you are charged for 90 pounds of freight

A twelve inch box truss six feet long would be 72" + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 = 120" Therefore even if it is aluminum and weights only 10 pounds, the shipper is charged for 70 pounds of freight.

Cheaplights new system is a little funky for shipping costs. I call my orders and have them recalculate things. It's saved me a few dollars.

My bad. I see the real weight is like 13lbs. That makes MUCH more sense. So, to hold a light do I go with triangle, or box truss.

Yup... I'd forgotten about that. When it comes to shipping, size matters. :D

I believe one aspect that's considered is how much room the package takes up in the courier truck. It may not weigh a lot but as Bill mentioned, they'll stick you with a higher freight because it's so large.

Just for everyone's info, triangular truss can be very heavy depending on what it's constructed of. For instance, Rhone Tower truss pieces usually weigh in around 75 to 100 lbs. per 10 to 12 feet. BUT! That's because of what it's used for: Radio Broadcast Towers. It isn't much larger in diameter than the standard Global truss sections of pipe, but the material it's constructed of (hardened re-inforced steel) makes it much heavier.

I've seen this type of truss used for lighting, but only for permanent installs and many times in an outdoor patio/bar area, since it was orginally designed for outdoor use anyway.

Just my thoughts............

These vertical trusses can indeed weigh a few pounds depending on their construction

I can speak about the horizontal triangular truss system. I just got my brand new American DJ Dura-truss System. It is a Triangular Style Truss,(2 - 5 ft sections).

It is extremely strong, and it is very heavy! 83 lbs to be exact!

The weight is in the two crank up stands. The truss sections are very light weight. But the stands are every bit of 35 lbs each!

As for stability---FANTASTIC!

As for strength---I hung from the center by my hands--no sag -- and I weigh 225Lbs!

The crank up feature is absolutely wonderful. Hang and wire your lights just a few feet off the ground, then crank it up to 9 ft if you like!
