Fred Stewart 02-17-2008, 04:55 AM On radio, that is. Patrick ain't got nothing on Wolfie, lol. :)
Where to start?
Let's start with the endless self-promotion that pervades FM radio these days. Not commercials... I understand that commercials are a necessary evil. They pay the utility bills and the royalties.
I'm talking about the constant barrage of station self-promotion. All day and all night, all you hear is endless spots that promote the station's website. "Keyword: race day" or "Keyword: _______" (fill in the blank). Damn but these people put more work into making those annoying website promo spots than they do programming music.
I don't give a care about your website nor your "keywords". STFU and play some music, please. And I don't give a care about your concert ticket promotions. Despite all your pomp and circumstance that constantly interrupts my listening, I am not going to "win" anything.
Here's another thing that irritates me to no end: "The 'New' 94.7." For crissakes, the format change was done last year. It isn't "new" anymore. So STFU already, will yas?
While I'm on a rant I'll let youse Clear Channel people know exactly how I feel: Get your goddamned ballgames off my FM radio. That's what AM is for. Put the ball games and NASCAR crap back on AM where it belongs. I wanna hear music on my FM radio and I don't want it interrupted by sports crapola.
It really pisses me off when I have to shut the FM radio off during weekends because you people have usurped the FM band with your useless sporting events. I do not care to hear about your ball games. Last time I looked, every radio that has been manufactured since the 1920s has AM reception. So take the sports back there. Keep it over there. We listen to FM and we don't want it.
When I was a pup growing up in the '60s, the Country station in Norfolk, WCMS did a simulcast on both FM and AM. The AM station switched to preaching at 9:00 on Sunday mornings. The FM station continued on with music. The AM station went off the air at 6:00 PM. The FM station broadcast 24/7. That was one hell of an incentive to buy an FM radio, which I did just to get away from the preaching and dead air at night.
Now, you've ruined FM... and you wonder why people are paying for satellite radio. I think that's sad.
CC Country music radio is a joke today. Sure, I like Kenny Chesney and George Strait. But not all day long, every day. You people have access to more than that. Christ, you promote the biggest music library, yet you play the same old tracks over and over. Why the hell don't ya play some Kacey Jones for a change? You've got the same promotional releases I have.
You won't play 'em. Why?
Riddle me this. http://www.ourdjtalk.com/images/icons/icon5.gif
Bryan Durio 02-17-2008, 12:57 PM Amen, Brotha Fred!!
barry stamper 02-17-2008, 01:17 PM and the choir sings hallelujah
GoodKnightDJ 02-17-2008, 01:46 PM Now was this a rant or a "Patrick Lewis"? :sqcool: :sqerr: :sqlaugh:
SoftJock Rick 02-17-2008, 02:04 PM We really need to chip in, and get Fred a satellite radio... :sqwink:
DJ Dan 02-18-2008, 01:21 AM I find it annoying that's why I rarely listen to FM any more, I'd rather hear commercials than constant self promotion. My guess is it's all about driving traffic to their websites, they sell ads space on those sites the more visitors they got the more they can charge.
TV is the same way.. You remember how the network logo used to be the only thing in the bottom right hand corner? Then it went to the network logo and website address. From there it went to "You're now watching [show name]"..How stupid do they think we are?? We really don't know what we're watching?
From there it went to You're now watching X, next is X and after that is X on the bottom third of the screen. Annoying yes, unbelievable so.. Then it went to promos for big shows up coming "next Friday season premier of lost". Now it's all of the above + plus this show sponsored by Cadillac. give it a rest already.
These constant promos have been snuck in so slowly that people barely noticed. How long before 1/3 of the screen is completely taken up by advertisements?
One cannot really blame the media exes, with satellite and internet radio they're loosing listener ship. On the TV front, DVRs (TiVO) are so widely available that people just fast forward through commercials. Heck, I know I do..Advertisers know this and won't cough up as much dough for the Ad space.
But with these execs armed with the knowledge that people jump ship and use other outlets as soon as they become available or even pay money (TiVo) to skip commercials should be a sign to them that their advertising is annoying and not to be come more intrusive. Come on an hour show is over 20 minutes (1/3) commercials..WTH?
Fred Stewart 02-18-2008, 02:48 AM Thanks, Dan. Don't even get me goin' on cable television.
Too late. I'm on it. :D
Last time I checked, we were paying around $100.00 per month for cable and broadband. I'm not sure how much of that is for the cable television... but whatever it is, 'tis too much. Cable TV is worse than broadcast ever was with commercials... and that was free. We're paying to watch commercials. The cable companies are double dipping. I'm gonna bitch to the shop steward. Where's "Little Ricky" LoPiccollo when ya need him? ;)
My usual TV viewing time is after 2:00 in the morning. Guess what's on at that time of morning? You got it. Infomercials. Give that man a dog biscuit. :D
So, the way I figger, we're paying for the privilege of watching infomercials and UFO crap on the History Channel.
Aw, them watermark ads really piss me off. I used to think they did it to deter people from recording TV programs. Now it's completely gotten out of hand. :(
lets dance 02-18-2008, 05:17 PM Listen to radio why? Just annoying same as tv, I do like the websites though to check out the latest whats hot to add to my music collection. Speaking of getting preachy I have a motto( If I am going to watch tv I stop and think thier must be something better I can be doing with my precious time) and usally find lots to do.
For whatever it's worth.
Fred Stewart 02-18-2008, 05:30 PM The station websites have their use. Sometime back, Shirl heard a song she liked on the radio. The song title and artist weren't mentioned on the air (big surprise) so she hit the station's website to review their playlist. The station apparently keeps a running playlist log available for view on their website.
Yep, it has its uses. But to come on like a 21 gun salute every few songs? Honestly, that stuff gets old very fast. :(
SoftJock Rick 02-18-2008, 05:45 PM Fred,
We really got get yer sorry ass into Sat radio...
I don't even know where mine is, to be honest, but you can also listen on the computer as well, which is what I do, since I's in front of it all the time :sqerr:
Come to thunk, it's probably in the car -- which I don't often drive. I have the home and car kits.
I usually listen to the 70's or 80's channels, and not much hype, and no ads. Rick Stacy, who's the DJ on the 80's in the morning, is a blast (totally non-PC, and I almost guarantee he's got a bottle under the desk) :) ;)
Try it, ya just might like it...
Fred Stewart 02-18-2008, 06:03 PM Rick, you're absolutely right. I can't argue with the truth. :)
I dunno... maybe I just have this thing about paying for radio. Sat radio is sweet and I'd like to get into it some day. It's a lot cheaper than cable TV or broadband and there's more programming to choose from.
Let me get some bills caught up first. December wiped us out. I may get into sat radio yet. :)
SoftJock Rick 02-18-2008, 06:20 PM We'll get ya into the 20th century soon Fred...
The 21st may be a bit too much for you old farts just yet... :sqlaugh: :sqwink:
djxpress 02-18-2008, 07:17 PM Amen, Brotha Fred!!
Brian, that's "brother" not "brotha"; just keeping it real...:sqwink:
Papa Deuce 02-18-2008, 07:19 PM FM? What is that?
I only listen to satrad or AM.
Fred Stewart 02-18-2008, 07:55 PM AM? What's that? I haven't listened to AM since the days of Wolfman Jack. ;)
Papa, I gave the AM dial a scan not long ago just on a lark. This was with a late '70s vintage GE portable. GE made very sensitive radios back in the day. It's a combo FM/AM/UHF/VHF tunable scanner. It picks up everything. :)
All I heard was talking and preaching and some indie music. There doesn't seem to be any mainstream music on AM anymore. I just wish the FM stations would put the NASCAR and ball games back on AM where they belong.
Besides, I don't like static. Also, I don't care for the lopped off audio frequencies. I understand that it's the physics of AM propagation but I still don't care for it.
Plus, it's a personal thing. When I was a pup, an FM radio was still a luxury. I had to save to buy an FM radio when I was little. No one gave me one. It just ticks me off to see how FM has been ruined by corporates.
sparkieg 02-18-2008, 11:40 PM Here's a small clue Fred - there's a real underlying reason the stations keep hyping this new HD radio you hear the promos for - remember the old days of PAYOLA? These days, it's called promotion - same thing. It's just another trick to get you to part with your hard earned dollar - which is why they keep hyping "HD channel is commercial free" on the analog channels. The stations are in cahoots with the manufacturers to get you to go down to your local Wally World or Radio $h*#k and buy one of these new fangled HD equipped radios for your vehicle.
Conspiracy theory? Try again -
Just my thoughts.
Bryan Durio 02-19-2008, 09:51 AM Brian, that's "brother" not "brotha"; just keeping it real...:sqwink:
Not if you pronounce it the way it was intended!! :D
(Well, if you REALLY want to spell it the way it's pronounced, it would be "Brutha.") :sqwink:
Oh, and it's Bryan, sir!
djxpress 02-20-2008, 11:22 PM Oh, and it's Bryan, sir!
Not if you pronounce it the way it looks...BrIan, not BrYan...:sqconfused:
Your spelling looks like Br-why-an...:sqlaugh:
