First of let me say, I'm not an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) expert nor do I play one on TV. What I'm writing here is based on first hand experince.
#1: Google is not the only search engineYahoo was on top before Google came along. Google has been on top for a while, the only place they have to go is down. Google's latest algorythem update, named BigDaddy, has a lot of professional webmasters really pissed off. PageRank changed, search engine referals are down, and people are loosing money.
Even after you submit your site to Google it doesn't appear immediately. There is something called the Google sandbox there is a lot of mis-information floating around out there. Basically in short a site don't appear right away Google keeps it jail for a period of time, waiting for back links to verify it isn't just another Search Engine Spam site.
When ODJT first started we ranked #3 for Bose PAS DJ and # 5 for DJA Radio. As of right now, Google only lists this site twice.
#2: "SEO Professionals" are much like Professional DJs no one certifies them.
In short many are just looking to make a quick buck by changing your meta tags. Don't waste your money!
#3: Use good clean SEO techniques, manually submit your site and you will be listed in time.See #1. All search crawlers aren't the same; They rank sites differently what makes Google rank your page higher may lower your MSN or Yahoo rank.
#4: Don't waste your money on submission servicesAll the major engines have a free submission page. See Carolyn's post. (http://www.ourdjtalk.com/showpost.php?p=6525&postcount=3)
Those claiming to submit to a 100+ search engines are a joke as 90% of them are useless.
#5: You only need to worry about the 5 major search engines
Google (http://www.google.com)
Yahoo (http://www.yahoo.com)
MSN (http://www.msn.com)
Ask Jeeves (http://www.ask.com)
AOL (http://www.aol.com)---
What else have you heard about search engines that you would like to know about?
