RoadRunner Intercepting Domain TyposDougF 02-26-2008, 08:57 PM If you have Roadrunner as your ISP, your mis-typing of a url may get you a sales pitch! http://slashdot.org/articles/08/02/26/1741253.shtml DJ Dan 02-27-2008, 05:17 PM I noticed this last week. I had to hard reset my router and forgot to reset my name servers back to Open DNS. It really doesn't bother me one way or the other, as OpenDNS does the same thing. It would be nice is common typos such as .ogr or .cmo were auto corrected like OpenDNS does instead of showing a page with sponsored links. But then again Broadband prices are pretty stagent these days so the companies gotta figure out a way to juice more $$ out of us. I'm surprised the big ISP's haven't tried increasing rate due to rising rising gas prices. Afterall, they could probably convince half of the internet public that they drive websites back and fourth to their network. :sqlaugh: Just be be glad they aren't doing what Rodgers did up in Canada (http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2007/12/canadian-isps-p.html). Fred Stewart 02-28-2008, 05:11 AM A bit off topic here but this thread reminded me of it. Back in the mid-90s when the Internet was becoming more settled, many online entrepeneurs were purchasing typo domain names in the hopes of picking up traffic from people who were looking for mainstream sites and mis-typed the URL. Domain names like frod.com (ford.com) were common at a time when cyber squatters were being hammered. :) | |
