The real reason some people use LinuxDougF 03-15-2008, 04:55 PM (myself included!) http://blog.anamazingmind.com/2008/03/real-reason-we-use-linux.html DJ Dan 03-16-2008, 03:47 AM That's a great article, Thanks Doug! :) djMarco 03-17-2008, 09:43 AM I was considering to use Linux but not even one decent Dj program dont work with the Linux. So i stay with Windows for now and I think to go for Apple and OSX. DJ Cam 03-17-2008, 11:39 AM To look cool to the computer community? That's my final answer. SoftJock Rick 03-17-2008, 12:57 PM The real reason some people use Linux Top 5 reasons people use Linux: 5. They visit a lot of porn sites. 4. They use a lot of P2P file sharing stuff. 3. They hate Bill Gates, because he is successful, and they are not. 2. They're cheap, and want everything free. 1. They have no idea how to open or close a Window properly. GoodKnightDJ 03-17-2008, 01:33 PM 1. They have no idea how to open or close a Window properly. It depends on what you are using. C++, Vb, Java, etc. The calls are just so different. Personally, I prefer to just press and hold in that big button on the front of my computer. That closes all of the windows... Speaking of Java, my cup is empty... DougF 03-17-2008, 01:33 PM In response to the above.... 5. Wouldn't admit it if I did. 4. I don't share files, toothbrushes, or combs 3. You mean the AntiChrist right???? 2. One thing I am not is a cheapskate, tight with a dollar yes, cheapskate no. 1. In a world without walls and fences who needs windows and gates! :sptongue: :spcheesy: :spwink:  :splaugh: SoftJock Rick 03-17-2008, 02:02 PM In a world without walls and fences who needs windows and gates! I don't know about you Doug, but I have walls, fences, and two gates :) It's to keep the transients (Linux people) out :sqlaugh: Never, have I seen sooo many people, spend sooo much time and energy, to save $150 for a properly working OS, that is supported by the company that designs it -- instead of a bunch of ragamuffins who want to strut their programming stuff :sqlaugh: It's like doing yer own taxes -- it costs you much more in the long run, then hiring an accountant... Better yet, it's like hiring a bottom feeder DJ, instead of getting a quality DJ. Life is simple -- if you live it that way :) ;) toqer 03-17-2008, 04:04 PM Top 5 reasons people use Linux:  You forgot: They copy and paste slashdot headlines to ODJT. DJEP Troy 03-17-2008, 09:59 PM Most of those reasons are the very reasons that Linux won't achieve widespread usage for a long time. The average user doesn't want to "play" with their system. They just want it to work. Having so many flavors of Linux is not helpful to the promotion of the OS. I'm a techie, and I wouldn't know where to start. Note: I'm no Windows fanboi. I like the web because it is OS agnostic. jclaydon 03-17-2008, 10:49 PM I don't know about you Doug, but I have walls, fences, and two gates :) It's to keep the transients (Linux people) out :sqlaugh: Never, have I seen sooo many people, spend sooo much time and energy, to save $150 for a properly working OS, that is supported by the company that designs it -- instead of a bunch of ragamuffins who want to strut their programming stuff :sqlaugh: It's like doing yer own taxes -- it costs you much more in the long run, then hiring an accountant... Better yet, it's like hiring a bottom feeder DJ, instead of getting a quality DJ. Life is simple -- if you live it that way :) ;) Well that's where I disagree. The ONLY OS that works properly *ie the way it was designed to* is Mac's OS 10. XP still has bug fixes released on a regular bases, and is a joke when it comes to security. Vista shows promise but I don't plan on installing it until they release a service pack for it. I'd use Linux, but unfortunately there isn't any decent dj or karaoke software for it and I don't know enough to play around with setting to make programs i use work with Wine.. DJ Dan 03-18-2008, 07:51 AM Top 5 reasons people use Linux: 5. They visit a lot of porn sites. 4. They use a lot of P2P file sharing stuff. 3. They hate Bill Gates, because he is successful, and they are not. 2. They're cheap, and want everything free. 1. They have no idea how to open or close a Window properly. BOOOO!!!!!!!!! You're killing me here Rick. :sptongue: 5) Once in a blue moon 4) Once in a blue moon to grab legally shared files such as Linux ISOs via Bit Torrent. I do sample a new song here and there if I like it enough to copy over to my MP3 player, I buy it. It's just the right thing to do. 3) Nah, I'm actually a fan of his success not necessarily his products though. I could learn a lot from him. 2) That's was part of it for me, though not necessarily a huge selling point. I was very happy to find a completely free operating system with Ubuntu when XP locked me out from reactivating because I'd formatted an reinstalled one too many times, on the SAME machine 1) Hey Linux has Windows too! :D For me as I said above I first introduced myself to Linux when XP locked me out from reactivated for formating and installing too many times, funny thing is the format and reinstall process was caused by XP's crappy built in security. I doubt I had to reinstall all those times, most of the times it was a preventive measure as security was possibly breached, it could've been nothing but it's better safe than sorry. The only way to truly know how secure you system is after a breach is to with a start fresh. This is OS independent BUT Window's is much more easily breached due to it's lack of security features. This was with XP, Vista is a different story. As a computer user paying 'the MS tax' of roughly $200 on nearly every computer you buy off the shelf, I shouldn't have to pay for additional software just to safely use my computer. MS has made some headway here, mal-ware tools are included in the default install of Vista. This is called Windows Defender and protects against spy & adware. Most users still need to pay for anti-virus software though, most companies are going subscription based for this which winds up being expensive. As for Linux, it helped me squeeze another 18 months usage out of my old computer and build ODJT. ;) I was amazed by what I could do with Linux with my old system's specs which wouldn't even run Vista and struggled with XP with Zone Alarm and AV running in the background which was necessary with XP. With Vista, surprisingly I'm really liking it. It's not as bad as people are making it out to be. It runs Firefox, Open Office, The GIMP, and Winamp very well which in the grand scheme of things is what I use most of often. I suspect those who are complaining so much about it being a bloated piece of crap cheaped out and bought a bargain basement model. Don't get 1 GB of RAM and a single core processor than expect a superfast system it wouldn't even be that fast with XP much less the latest and greatest. Spend a few bucks and get a powerful system that's going to last you until Windows 7 comes out in 2010. My only other beef with Microsoft is vendor lock in. It's a smart business model but not good for your customers. Most recently they're trying to push their office format as an open standard when it isn't truly open like the Open Office formats but can you really blame Microsoft? Any company's prime objective is to maxiumize it's profits. For me on my new computer one of the first things I did was paritition and install Ubuntu. On the laptop I just picked up over the weekend I did the same thing but still left Vista as the default operating system because as the Apple guys like to say, "It just works". I still use Ubuntu for web development work as it has lots of built in tools that make my job a helluva a lot easier. and that's my $.05, :) Dan djMarco 03-18-2008, 09:48 AM One for Rick! Why realy no one make a good Dj program for Linux? Are there only few people using it or some other reasons.I ask because in Europe some series of Acer and HP laptops comes with Linux on it. I must tell another story too. When Vista was comming out and people see it Mac computers was selling better for 300%.I know Mac with OSX 10....is a perfect tool but Vista is not popular at the moment.Europe was never Mac friendly teritory but now i must tell-things changes Mac is speeding up.Maybe the reason is design from computers too.iMac and MiniMac are werry cute soo... SoftJock Rick 03-18-2008, 11:07 AM Why realy no one make a good Dj program for Linux? Because Linux users expect everything for free -- and I can't buy beer if I give away my software ;) :) | |
