Run Forest, run... :sqerr:

too late I'm already paid and signed....

I already got 131 of the songs on that list.... where it said (dirty) if there was a clean version I got that along with the clean version.... the clean version will get preferencial play over the dirty versions depending on what "dirty" means.... it is as she called it an "African American Reception"

I will stick out like a "White" thumb.... but I'll play the music like a good 'ol white boy.... lol

Actually because of the style of music they want I welcome the list.... she's givin me control over the mix for the evening... but the music selection is hers and his.

All I ask from her is to tell me what the top must plays are so that I'm sure to play them... she's well aware that we wont be playing everything from the list but that I will have them all just in case....

Plus it really bumped my song count up....

Jon Tuck

okay so If you BPM count them you can sample and quick mix that list and then some. In this case use your white thumb to make sure you can Beat mix flawless and know the beats so as to not train wreck the event.

Funny the bride and groom are probably my age in thier 30's...

This is her party and this is how she wants it.... who am I to argue....

what's in yellow is just blanks nothing to see... I think it's her way of keeping track of information she doesn't have yet.... you see that mostly in the artist column's I believe.

Actually I've been listening to the music and if the crowd is right I think this is going to be one off the hook wedding reception...

I really need to buy or rent a Subwoofer .... I just wish there were a place I could rent or borrow one from for that night.

Although when I asked her if she was looking for big bass club sound she said no... my two speakers on sticks would be fine... they do get down... but Iiiiiiii don't know....

This is standard request stuff in my area. The old stand bys are what we have to talk them into. It seems we wend up there because their lists don't work too well, but this kind of stuff is where they start.

Yeah me neither I'm not totally up on this type of music so I'll be listening to it and making up playlists long before the event and then I'll tweek them at the event....

She wants smooth R&B, Jazz (especially saxaphone jazz) like Kenny G, and so forth for the arrival of guests and dinner music.... that's cake for me I like that stuff too...

Then all the special dances.... etc.

After 10pm we are to rip loose and rock the house... as she puts it.... lol

I think I really need to update my OtsDJ license to OtsAV and soon.... I'd do rockit but I truely love the way Ots mixes.... no offence rick.

I would not have a problem at all with the client submitting a list like that...I think that the client probably knows what they like and what their guests like as well or to a degree anyway. Now look at the list, over 10 hours of songs selected so that means that you can go through that list and play the best of it.

I have DJ Intelligence and have my music list set that the clients can choose 15 must plays and 200 play if possible songs, you would not believe how many clients actually fill up the play if possibles.

Once the contact is signed it is kind of hard to Run from the event. A couple of years ago we had a wedding booked and we were having our final meeting a couple of weeks before the Wedding to finalize all the little things and they presented us with a playlist for the evening, not only did they choose the songs, but also the order that they wanted the songs played and we were not allowed to take or play requests. It was quite the playlist and alot of the songs I have never played and will probably never play again.

I was worried about how the event would turn out with the restrictions they just put on us. So what I did was made an announcement Something like this. (it was a little different but you get the idea)

Ladies and Gentlemen, Barney and Betty have taken considerable time and and effort to chose a selection of music for you their guests, They hope you enjoy the music and join them out on the dance floor this evening....

Guess what.. the party rocked and everyone had fun.

I think maybe some times we take it to personally when someone who hires us gives us a list of songs that we do not normally play and maybe we don't think they will work. But ultimately who are we working for and who knows their guests the best.. they do....

I have a similar situation this Saturday night. The B&G are control freaks. But they paid my full fee for me to essentially be a human jukebox, as you see below, so what do I care?

Want claasical and sinatra type music.

After our get-to-know-you meeting, they were eager to hire me, but her parents balked at my price. I spent over an hour on the phone with her mom, who apparently got mixed up with things I told her, because I then got this:

Hi Bryan.

I spoke to my mom and she said that she had called you. I am a little concerned about a couple of things. The first concern is that she said you were not aware that we did not want any of the guests requesting songs. We absolutely do not want people requesting songs. We would like to choose our music.

With that being said, my second concern is the limited amount of music that we are allowed to choose. Xxx and I are very particular about what we would like played and we would like to choose more than 10 songs. Actually, we would like to pick out a lot of songs. We also need to be guaranteed that this music will be played.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Best,
Xxxxx
Hoo boy. I replied with this:

Hi Xxxxx,

Thanks for your email. I should have known I'd get in trouble with that.

I have absolutely no problem with you not wanting me to take any requests. I even said that to your mom and I suggested things I could say to your guests to convey that fact. I didn't think she would take it and run with it. I don't understand how this could be misconstrued!

I also explained how my Request Lists work, and I thought your mom understood that. Please understand that it's perfectly fine for you not to want me to take requests and I will honor your wishes, but I haven't had too many clients who had that in mind. Yes, I have had some; read Colleen Scruggs' write-ups here ( http://www.atlantabridal.com/showcase/dj.asp) and here ( http://www.atlantabridal.com/showcase/dj2.asp). She was a bride who didn't want me to take any requests. I didn't, and her reception was successful! I rarely have a client who does not want me to take requests, so the following is to illustrate what happens if a client has a full Must Play list and also allows me to take requests to satisfy the guests' tastes.

Given an average length of 4 minutes per song, a typical 4-hour party would allow somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 songs (15 per hour) to be played if nothing else occurred. Of course, a lot of things happen in a wedding reception to interrupt the music, so the number may be less than 60. I limit the Must-Plays to 10 because, depending on the songs on the list, the guests' responses may lead me in an entirely different musical direction than the songs on the list. The list may have 8 Must Play slow songs. The list may have 10 Must Play Reggaeton songs. What if the crowd is unresponsive to the Must Play songs? But I can sprinkle in 10 songs over a four-hour time frame.

I also have the Play-If-Possible songs limited to 45. Those are for my clients to give me a pick list of songs to select from, and they also guide me in the general direction(s) to take the music. If some of the songs on this list aren't played, that's okay. But I typically get quite a few of these songs played.

I also have the Do-Not-Plays limited to 30. If there are more than 30 songs that need to be specified, then I haven't done my job in getting to know my clients and their musical tastes.

But your situation is not like what I just described. Since you don't want me to take requests, all of the above--except for the number of songs per hour--flies right out the window. It does not apply. I can't set or release song limits to the three lists on an individual basis, so any songs you specify on either list are Must Plays. Just understand that if you put 60 songs total in your lists and expect them all to be played at your reception, given what I have described above, they may not all get played unless a lot of them are very short or I speed them up! I can't change math.

I hope this eases your concerns. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

She sent me:

Hi-

My mom was fine with everything, I just wanted to make sure we were all right.

Thanks and talk soon.

Xxxxx
WTF?? Then why all the consternation?

After perusing my DJI database, they sent me:

Message: Hi Bryan.

Is there a way to add more Johnny Mathis songs? Thank you. Xxxxx & Xxx
I only get the rare request for Johnny Mathis, so I don't have much of him in my music arsenal. I responded that I could get the additional Mathis tunes no problem.

All in all, 41 emails have gone back and forth between the two of us.

So the adventure wound up last week with our planning meeting. After that, I got this email:

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks so much.

Yep...there were several more dups that were in the unsorted DNP List!

The bride told me that the DNP List was actually her sister's DNP List from her wedding, and the bride pretty much has the same musical tastes so she just forwarded it to me.

I have gigbuilder so my clients can do much the same thing as DJI they can make up to 4 lists... 1. Must Plays 2. want played 3. custum and 4. DNP also I have the Guest Request system...

It's getting them to use it that's sometimes the hard thing.

Bryan Durio

Yup. Gigbuilder's Request System is essentially a clone of DJI. I have disabled the Custom Request List. My clients really like the fact that they can have as big or as small an influence on the music for their event as they want!

I rarely have clients who do not use my Music Database.

That's true most do like the idea they can make these kinds of requests online without having to play phone tag with us....

In fact my Jun 21 wedding was booked not only because they liked what I offered at the meeting but also what I offered online by way of pre-event planning.... this is very convienent since it seems the majority so far have been college students that live outside of my area.

They like it because there is no need to schedule multiple meetings to go over their reception plans.. they simply log in make changes exchage a few emails and have maybe one last face to face finalization meeting and we are good to go.

Looks like my normal wedding request list.

I'm sure you will do fine. I generally play the normal stuff and drop a few more well known rap songs in the begining of the eveing. After the boquet and garter I pretty much turn it over to the rap music.

Cam: I'm not sure that it's going to be that bad. These people and their guests are older and more mature, and they like the kind of music they specified. The reception is from 8 PM until 11:30 PM. Dinner will be plated multi-course. Open bar. The schedule is compressed as it is, so I fully intend to give them exactly what they paid for: an elegant evening with a bit of frivolity (http://www.answers.com/frivolity) toward the end.

I rarely have weddings that end as early as 10 PM. When I do, I really like it because there's a pretty good chance that I'll get home before midnight!

Again, they are paying my full price, so if they want me to only play from their song list, that's what I'll do. I still get to read the crowd and sequence the tunes in addition to being the Master of Ceremonies.

I find that wild. 99% of our weddings here are at 1PM or 2PM and reception is 4pm to 9pm or 10PM at latest. Is this wedding on a Friday with such a late 8PM start?

It just proves how different weddings can be regionally.

All the others are 9PM or 10PM and I have 2 that end at 8PM

I have done weddings from couples from Canada. They party late!!

Most of my weddings are at wineries - about 90% of them outside - so we have to end at 10pm. I rather like it.

Of course I will be tweaking this before the show .... I can already see some flaws in the flow of the music especially in the Dance portion.

The reception last night was pretty darn good! Things got started late and the meal actually took up most of the reception time, but I had good participation the entire night.

That is, until the inebriated (http://www.answers.com/inebriated) bride vanished right around 11:00--right when I kicked in her 80s tunes--and things went pretty much downhill until 11:40, when she showed up for the Last Dance. Then after giving my congratulations and best wishes, she--and several of the remaining guests--insisted that I play the proverbial "one more song!" At that point her "keep it professional and elegant" went out the window, and we continued for another three songs.

Most people had left by then, and she kept insisting, "BUT I'M THE BRIDE! LOOK, PLAY 'DANCING WITH MYSELF!'" even though I had just played it right before the Last Dance. And I think she would have been dancing with herself. Alone! Her mom (the one who paid for this) overruled her, and we wrapped up a little after midnight.

Surprisingly enough, most of the older people stayed until I started the 80s set at 11:00.

All in all, it went exceedingly well. The bride even took me aside before things got going, and she said, "If I don't get to say this later, I want you to know I love you. You've been great through all the planning, and I really appreciate all you've done for us." Go figure!

I'll see what she has to say in her Satisfaction Survey!

Here's the playlist. Her brother, Peter, is a Major in the Army who's stationed in Hamburg, Germany, and flew in with his wife for the wedding.

Rob, your post is very timely for me! I am doing a wedding in...I forget the date...but it's an 8-hour backyard wedding. I just found out the client is African-American. I probably would have declined the opportunity if I had known that up front, just b/c I am not sure I have 8 hours of the music genres I suppose they might want. But your list will be very helpful for me. Thanks for posting. Best wishes for your event.

The list I posted in the pdf came from my client. Your clients tastes may differ... best thing you could do is have her compile a list of music they'd like to hear for you to build from. I use my online planners and music data base for this very purpose... what I do is I list as many songs as I can online whether I have them or not... this gives the client a wide variety to choose from and then I just go and purchase the ones I don't have.

Thoughts?

My experience with an exclusive list isn't exactly the same as yours, but for what it's worth here is what happened about five years ago.

One week before the wedding we received a music list for the dance that was put together by the groom. 114 songs, and we were to play them in the order that he had them listed. We had no idea that this was going to happen. I explained to the groom that we wouldn't have time to play 114 songs and asked about song requests from his guests. He said no to requests and told me to just keep playing the list until time ran out.

The dance started a few minutes after nine. Fifteen minutes into the dance, a couple approached me to see if I had any Italian music. I told them that I did but was not allowed to play it unless the groom changed his mind about requests. The groom didn't change his mind and they left. By 10:30 all 215 people were gone, and I wonder how many of them (and the staff and management at the venue) thought that I was incompetent and unable or unwilling to play to the crowd.

I would never accept anything like that again. One bride tried to do that out of the blue at an interview last year and I got out my cheque book and asked her whose name to put on the deposit refund cheque. She was rather upset but the groom was on my side. Her dance was a roaring success and she gave me a big hug and thank you at the end of the evening.

Of course I encourage requests from the bride and groom and will always yield to them in matters of taste, but no exclusive lists. Good luck.

Your right that does mix very well with Low - Flo Rida....

one question is Flo Rida pronounced as Florida... or Flow Ride-a?

I hate to be that white guy who can't even get the Eubonics right.... lol:sqbiggrin:

Its Flow - Ride - A

The good thing about this 10 hour list is I don't have to play every song on it... it really is just a list of music they'd like to hear throughout the evening... some of it is requests for dinner music and for cocktail time...

She is putting together two 10 song Must Play lists.... one for early in the evening and one for late in the evening.... the reason for two is because she has some Explicit music she wants played for sure and the idea is to play the clean stuff early while youngsters and those with more sensitive ears are there and then later after 10pm when they have left we can play the more explicit stuff.... and by explicit this stuff while offensive is mild it's not like it is dropping the f-bomb more to that it is dropping the N word and could be particularly offensive to children and well the sensitive type.... it's music for her new husband...

I've listened to all of the Explicit stuff and for the most part it's just sexually explicit with a spattering of the N word as I said.

I'll have my finalization meeting some time this week and we will go over the music... and order of events then.

Well, well, well! I got this email this morning. Just goes to show you, sometimes you don't really know how people REALLY thought a party went. :)

Hi Bryan-

Thank you for the BEST night ever! EVERYONE had the time of their life and the music was key! You were more than Xxx and I ever could have asked for. (Sorry for the extra requested songs that we originally did not want) We all had a little too much champagne but so much FUN!!!

As soon as we settle in a little bit today, we will happily fill out the attached form. I would HIGHLY recommend you to everyone.

Thank you again for the best night of our lives!

We will talk soon.

Xxxxx

Canadians sure do know how to party. I can't count the amount of times i've shut down at 1:30 and been asked if I would set up my gear at an after party. I have yet to take anyone up on their offer because I always look forward to spending the next day with my family but if I was young........er and single I would think about it.
