Precisionpower 03-29-2008, 06:44 PM What do you Karaoke masters use to clean up scratched up CDG'S???
Do those little Disc Doctor machines work???
The local used cd store will do them for $2.00 a piece, but they use a bench grinder withsome sort of wheel, and it sounds like sandpaper....Will this wreck the karaoke disc's??
Brian Martin 03-29-2008, 06:58 PM If the scratch is deep enough, they can sand them down all they want, it won't get rid of a skip. It's kind of like when they grind down your rotors on your car that are badly scored. Rather than buy the disc over, maybe you could download just the tract that is bad.
Precisionpower 03-29-2008, 07:01 PM I bought these used.....so they have the normal use light scratching..
Nothing serious.......
jokerswild 03-29-2008, 07:11 PM since the data is stored in the silver which is actually the label.... as long as the scratch doesn't penetrate the plastic all the way to the silver layer you should be able to resurface the CDG just fine....
hiredpower 03-29-2008, 07:13 PM This might be too expensive, but:

Fred Stewart 03-29-2008, 07:19 PM Brian's right. If a scratch is deep enough to affect the data layer, no amount of patching is gonna fix it.
I dunno if this will be of help but I'll pass along some experience. We had some discs that were seriously gouged and wouldn't read the affected area on a standard player. Yet, the disc will play on the Pio with no skips, stutters, nothing.
Pro grade players are engineered to overlook interruptions in the data stream and replace them with what "appears" to be the correct data.
Thoughts?

Just an add on. Most players will overlook light radial ( from center out ) scratches, but will have problems with circular (track following ) scratches, which is why you have to clean across rather than around.
The store is using a slow speed buffer and jewelers rouge. Not a great idea as if accidentaly held in one place too long the disc will melt.
BEST idea: Burn back-up copies using correction software- effectively re-mastering. Time consuming on a PC, but worth it. I use a Microboards QuicDisc standalone burner- the correction firmware is built in, and the process is much quicker. Although it costs over 300.00, it has earned it back many times over....
Next best: Yes, the Disc Dr. works. The electric version does a better job, but you MUST follow the instructions. This machine uses a much lighter abrasive ( think pencil eraser). The disc must be kept wet at all times, and the polishing process after the repair is IMPERATIVE. If time allows, I would backup what you have for safety's sake, resurface, then back up the repaired discs ( you can then get rid of the old backups)
If the label side is damaged there is nothing you can do but buy a new disc..

Somebody get me a towel.... If that thing does half what it says it does it's worth every cent and more. Just put it on my "to buy soon" list. deep gauges? I actually have the DK 1-99 collection, but most are, at this point, un-useable and un-correctable. If this thing can fix them well enough to back up, I'm in heaven....:sqcool:
hiredpower 04-01-2008, 06:56 AM Joe,
If you trust me and want to send one of your discs, I'll will try to repair it.
OR
Post a pictue of the gouge and I will duplicate the damage. Then try to repair it and post my results.

Teh offer is greatly appreciated, and I DO trust you! However, I meant what I said about the "buy soon".
Out of the DK 1-99 collection, I have maybe 15 that I have corrected and remastered. That means I have a LOT of repairing to do. I have some old Sound Choice discs that are no longer available as well. These are discs with serious damage. I can already correct lightly damaged discs. I believe that this investment is well worth it, and will keep me disc based a long time. I plan on ordering it within the next two weeks. Once again, I thank you for the offer! :sqwink:
Precisionpower 04-02-2008, 01:49 AM Joe,
Are the old Dk disc's hard to come by??

The set has been off the market for some time. The versions are not only top notch, but there are many songs included that are unavailable elsewhere. This particular set is considered gold by many Karaoke Hosts. If the set that you find is in good condition, it's most certainly worth buying, but it will probably be rather expensive. It's up to you. I inherited mine-literally. One of my mentors in this business willed them to me, along with some other hard to get older discs.
Precisionpower 04-02-2008, 05:50 PM The guy that has them, doesn't use them.
So, maybe i should make him an offer. What's a fair price???

Gonna have to do a bit of research for that. Haven't priced them recently. However, since the guy isn't using them, why not ask what he would take for them? Bring the number back here, and by that time I will have researched it. I think you will get a better price this way.....:sqwink:
