Which External Sound Cards Work With VISTA?

So I was thinking about getting the Behringer to use with my new laptop, but I was wondering if it for sure works with VISTA.

I have the USB model of the Creative XFi and the PCMCIA version too. If they work OK with VISTA then I don't need to get the Behringer.

I've shot my wad, I'm tapped out, between the EV subs and the laptop Il'l be lucky if I don't get divorced. No way I can afford an expensive sound card so please don't recommend it.

I figured I would ask before I start plugging stuff into the new lappy and cause some sort of windows meltdown or damage the windows kernel or some such horrible software damage. Help a brotha out.

Same here -- I have a couple of them, and they work great :)

Any USB sound card will work fine with Vista -- you will only run into problems if you load their drivers, and that will be dependent on whether they have Vista drivers.

I don't load any drivers for any of my sound cards, and so far, every one has worked fine on Vista...

Almost every Card which work with XP work with Vista as well.Only a few Cards need some driver and its done.
My M-Audio Fast Track work well.

I love my turtle bay micro's. Smaller than a pack of gum, only $30 each (I use two with VDJ) and work with Vista.

Kris - did you load the drivers from TB or just let Vista detect it?

Did you get the lists?

Steve, I did get your lists this morning. I really appreciate it!

I didn't load a thing. I let Vista do the work. VDJ had no problem recognizing them and so far about a year of flawless performance.

Using 2 at once?

Yep, I run one for the main output and the other to cue up the track. Each runs to a seperate channel on my mixer so I can cue up tracks while plugged into my main board and not through the computer.

That's what I do with the Behringers as well -- each deck gets it's own card and mixer channel.

If you don't load any specific manufacturer drivers, and just use the generic Windows drivers, you can plug as many as you want in :)

I got the courage to plug my USB Creative Xfi into the new laptop and it works fine. I'm still thinking about getting a Behringer or Turtle Bearch and use the Creative on some of my other older computers.

I'm reluctant to try the PCMCIA version of the Creative Xfi on the new laptop because I don't know how VISTA will react. I'm being super cautious with this new laptop, I don't want to mess anything up in the operating system. I experimented a lot with some of my other computers with lots of different programs and now things are shaky, I may have to reinstall XP on one and VISTA on the other and start fresh-I really hate the idea of doing it, but I may have no choice.

With the new laptop the plan is to install very few programs and as little hardware as possible. I want to keep things as clean and as simple as I can and not give VISTA any reasons to crash or get glitchy.

You have a PCMCIA slot in your new laptop or Express card?...If it is that latter...I can give you a great deal on an Xfi Expresscard card....lol

Wouldn't worry too much about breaking Vista with a sound card -- the audio has been abstracted out of the core kernel in Vista, and moved into the user area. Worst case, they just don't work :)

You can break XP though... :sqerr:

Actually I don't know what the slot is on the laptop. I assumed it had a PCMCIA slot, I didn't know there was any other kind.

I already have a Xfi for a laptop and used it with my Toshiba that I gave to my daughter. I had to delete/uninstall the creative labs media software because it was causing problems. At this point I think I'm going to put the Xfi laptop version on ebay and just use the onboard audio or use the USB Xfi. Or I'll get a Behringer or Turtle beach USB sound card.

Vista Home Premium here... ESI U46DJ is what I always recommend.

If it's a new laptop, it's probably Expresscard...

Does expresscard take PCMCIA cards too?

Well the Xfi worked in my Toshiba laptop that I got about 6 months ago. I have no idea if the Xfi is an expresscard or PCMCIA, but I assume it's a PCMCIA. I don't know...
