Valerie Ruste 04-27-2008, 09:24 PM Kinda pressed for space, even though it is in a large room. Had barely enough space to set up; this was as small as we could make our little stereo! lol Tweaked the system and tracked down a phase issue that has been occasionally bothering us. System ROCKED after that. Loaded up in 2 1/2 hours--a very speedy load out, especially with extra equipment to deal with (followspots and camera for grand march).
flipper06 04-27-2008, 09:29 PM Val,
That is phenominal! I wanna be you when i grow up..lol. Your setups always amaze me, i do hope someday to do the type of events that you do. Thanks for posting.
That's Phenomenal absolutely phenomenal <spoken in my best jim rome>

DJ SVO 04-27-2008, 10:09 PM Awesome!!!! Still drooling ;)
jtnichol 04-27-2008, 10:10 PM Everytime I see your pics, I just keep thinking I'm gonna figure it out.....lol
Valerie Ruste 04-27-2008, 10:43 PM It's nothing someone else couldn't do with a little (ok, a lot of) ambition and a couple hundred thousand dollars to spend! :sqwink:
Just for fun, here's a look in the back of the truck loaded with the DJ system. Complete with a shameless plug for Nlfx (note backpack next to camera case). There's still room for more....
Valerie Ruste 04-27-2008, 10:52 PM Here's the 'other side'.
Steve Cie 04-27-2008, 11:10 PM I gotta ask. Where do you get the electricity that you need from?
Your set up looks great, and wow, you really have a lot of gear.
Valerie Ruste 04-27-2008, 11:54 PM Steve
We require 50A of 220V power plus a couple extra 110V circuits. If the facility doesn't have it readily available (which they usually do), the will many times have it installed or temporarily installed for us. This particular facility is well powered, and they drop a 220 line off the ceiling for us right in the corner, meaning no extensions to drag out. [Yay]
We are fortunate to be in a position where our clients are eager and happy to meet our technical requirements. Most of the venues we play at already have sufficient power available. We carefully choose additional equipment purchases to avoid using our 3 phase distro; that's something not quite to readily available.
DJ JohnThe1 04-28-2008, 07:30 PM Wow! I love your set up's. I always show the Piece your pictures and all she says to me is to keep dreaming.
Steve Cie 04-28-2008, 08:35 PM Valerie, thanks for the reply. I have had power problems at several older venues. And even at some of the newer and remodeled venues, they often have a single 20 amp circuit for the whole room.
I was thinking about using 220 volts supply. Can you suggest a reasonable way to break it down to 110? Is there a panel box that is sold, or something.
How do you do it?

We make our own distros because of the sort of extensive system we need to supply. Many distributors do make a small 220 distro that is handy. I'm sure Ben can set you up.
Way back when (in multi op days) we had a small distro that went 220 to 4 circuits. It was a small plastic breaker panel with outlets mounted in the sides, and a short 220 tail. Remember when you get a distro you will also need a few adapters. We use this particular 220 (a 4 wire range) because it is very common. We carry a pigtail in case we need to tie into a box and also a few different other adapter ends for the unusual buildings.
Granted, a 220 distro won't help you if you don't have power to the building. There are older buildings that just don't have much service. For us, it's not an issue as they are typically too small for us anyway. :sqwink:
Travis B 04-28-2008, 09:31 PM Good Job Val,
Where are the orange "safety" extension cables ;)
Valerie Ruste 04-28-2008, 09:35 PM lol. We are pretty monochrome. Black road cases, black speakers, black cords. The cords on the floor in front of the amp rack are 1/3 of the speaker cords. THe power cords are on the other side.
Sorta dreary looking in the back of the trailer--you lose all depth perception in that photo. Hard to tell just exactly how many boxes and speakers there really are. (just ask Brian aka PrecisionPower if in doubt. He's had his share of toting speakers!)
RaskyKat 04-28-2008, 09:45 PM Valerie, thanks for the pics of your recent gig. Can you post like, say, a buttload of pics from this and other gigs so we can lust wontonly over them? ...or at least so we can show our wives and accountants and loan officers?

lol Will!
Actually, I have a dj friend far, far away who keeps photos of our system handy so when his wife complains about the amount of gear he buys he can pull them out and say "See, I don't have THAT much stuff!!" Guess it works. She settles right down.
DJ Cam 04-28-2008, 09:49 PM I wish people here would pay more than $500 for a prom. I'd so be pimping a system like yours. ......but Turbosound.
I can't get enough money to bring out the 4 -Dual 18" and 4 Dual 15" cabs with 2 Video screens. Every time I tell people $1500 they say they were thinking about $400 - $500 max.
The normal prom here is DJ'd by someone with 2 powered eons.
Thanks for the pics, it always nice to see someone out there is doing some real work.
Travis B 04-28-2008, 10:10 PM How many conventionals do you have? 48K? I'm just trying to throw around some idea's here.

jtnichol 04-29-2008, 10:31 AM super cool!
RaskyKat 04-29-2008, 02:32 PM Very kool, Val! I love the final pic of the tractor-trailer movin' on down the road w/ the sun rising in front of it!

A *mostly* current equipment list can be found
http://squareonesd.com/equipment.htm
In general, 32 narrow spot Par 64's. Lots of specials, truss lights and some intels on top of that.

Steve does all of our video editing. I tell him what I'm looking for and he puts something together. I never quite know what I'm going to get back till it's in my hands! Lol He is quite handy with Adobe Premiere Elements.
Anthony M 04-30-2008, 10:28 AM Val, what's your secret for getting all of those light fixtures on the truss in a reasonable amount of time? Is the truss pre-rigged with the lights? Do you have some sort of custom cable that drops all the right connections in all the right spots? I can't imagine having to run power and signal to all those fixtures!

We do have much of the truss prewired, with custom cable drops off the 3 sections to run back to the dimmers/distro/control. Takes about 3 1/2 hours to set up once we're loaded in; about 35-60 mins load in depending on distance.
We also have road cases for everything, and take directly from the box to the truss; no moving things twice. Clamps are attached, and we know exactly where everything goes in order to fit. We've spent a lot of time on mounting brackets, etc so things are as efficient as possible setting up and tearing down.
Travis B 04-30-2008, 01:07 PM Alot of production companies have PRT's (Pre Ran Truss) as they are called. They really help get your show assembled quickly. usually they put the par cans in the correct order before going, they have a stored position and have wheels on them sometimes for easy carting. Also, some feature Sacapex connections so its easy to wire together. I personally love PRT's!
Valerie Ruste 04-30-2008, 04:06 PM Yeah, our par cans are mounted on bars of 4 with dimmers, so power & signal and they're ready to go. Also consistency speeds things up a lot.
Steve Lynch 05-17-2008, 04:20 AM very very nice!
Val, the places you always show look like friggin' arenas.... don't they have any small banquet halls out yonder???

Val, the places you always show look like friggin' arenas.... don't they have any small banquet halls out yonder???
Yeah, there are small banquet halls here, but we don't fit in most of 'em! lol Our system is just over 65' wide. Most of the school dances near here (within 3-400 miles) have their events in the gym or fieldhouse. When you get beyond that distance, you start seeing more schools having them offsite; especially formals.
Since we don't have a 'small' system, well we do but I get made fun of when I call it the little stereo, we don't see much of small venues. They are typically wedding sites anyway, and we don't market weddings.
sparkieg 05-23-2008, 02:03 AM Val - if you think of it next time you guys have the camera out, could you get a couple close up pics of the distro? I'm sure there are those that would love to see it.

Actually, Steve is in the process of rebuilding it right now, so inside and out are very available. I'll take a camera with me to the shop tonight and take a few pics.
sparkieg 05-23-2008, 07:24 AM Thanks Val. I started a thread in the Gear Heads Forum concerning that very topic with pics of my distro.
