Djcarolina 05-04-2008, 03:39 AM So i was wondering what the best route would be for me to go down and i thought i'd get the oppinions of the ODJT crew. I just invested arounde $1200 in lighting so this will be a summer-long project but its worth knowing what your goal is. I currently have: (main gear)
2 JBL EON15
2 QSC HPR122i
2 Mackie SWA1501z
I was thinking of selling the EONs and replacing them. I didn;t know what to go with though. I'd like to stay QSC, and the 2 products in question are the HPR 152i and HPR 153i. One is a 500W 2-Way, 15" speaker and the other is a 600W 15" 3 way speaker. For those of you who understand the specs better, which would be a better choice for me? I'd likely be running them with the 2 15" subs and down the road adding 2 HPR181i subs to continue the QSC chain.
djMarco 05-04-2008, 05:25 AM 15inch subs and tops?:sqerr:
Especialy for 153modell you will be needed 18inch subs.:sqwink:
DJ JohnThe1 05-04-2008, 08:39 AM I would keep it all QSC since you already have the 12"s. Keep in mind the 15" tops are a bit heavy. If you decided to keep the weight down, add 2 more qsc 12"s to the arsenal for your bigger events. So down the road you will end up with 4 12"s and 2 18" subs. That set will be killer.
kevwebny 05-04-2008, 10:47 AM dj carolina whats up w/ the jbl eonsg2's how do they compare in sound to the qsc 12 u have. I purchased the 2bose L1s and 8 b1 subs and 2 packlite amps.
sparkieg 05-05-2008, 02:03 AM Hey Carolina -
How 'bout this system?

DJ Cam 05-05-2008, 03:04 AM Replace the Mackies before they Blow Up.
I suggest 2 QSC HPR 181i
djMarco 05-05-2008, 04:17 AM Im with Cam on this.
Hey Carolina what do you use to actually play?
jtnichol 05-05-2008, 10:16 AM Don't forget a Powered Speaker Driverack by DBX.
Skip the QSC and the EONS and go straight for the PRX by JBL.
Your back and ears will thank you later.
Djcarolina 05-05-2008, 07:10 PM I don't like the PRX systems. In my oppinion, they have an overall high-harsh sound just like the eons when you push them. The QSCs are a warmer sounding speaker and I'm a 17 year old football player, a 75lb speaker when lifted correctly is really nothing to me. As for the mackies, If they were going to blow, it would have DEFF. happened by now. I've run them with peak lights solid before for over 10 minutes before i realized it and not the first sign of overheating. I need larger subs, yes, but i like the mackies for smaller stuff. I'm between the HPR181i and the LS800P. I like how th 181i would keep things QSC, but the LS800P packs a HUGE punch for a very good price and is hailed as a great speaker both here and on other boards. Its something i'll have to give thought to.
Right now i'm thinking of trading out the EONs, putting a little money in and getting an additional set of 122i's, then i'll work on 2 more subs and then the 152i's. Seems like "stick" speakers work for me best and take up much less space than 3 ways.
jtnichol 05-06-2008, 12:02 AM IMO any self powered speaker being overdriven sounds like crap to my ears. You are saying the Mackies sounded fine clipping?
Djcarolina 05-06-2008, 11:57 PM Not necessarily, first of all remember, we're not talking about speakers, but subs which have a different configuration than powered loudspeakers. To me, they didn't sound any different when i was getting peak lighting than they did when they were running at reg. full power. I try to stay away from the clip zone though as, any speaker can be seriously damaged or fried if left in the danger zone too long.

I'm running 2 Mackie SRM450's and 2 QSC HPR181i's... I love the subs. I would have gotten the York LS800p's but they are too heavy/wide. 2 of them would fit in my SUV but leave me little room for anything else.
Good idea on getting RID of the EONS. Those are some of the most unprofessional / odd looking powered speakers out there. I can't imagine seeing a video of a public speaker or TV show with a fat 'EON' grille and storm-trooper vent ports sitting in the background. I'm gonna replace my 450's with QSC HPR122i's eventually. I don't like their lack of low-end but the overall sound of the QSC's are so much smoother and less harsh at higher volume levels than the Mackies.
jokerswild 05-18-2008, 11:36 AM I'm sorry did I miss the memo that said JBL was outdated junk that no self respecting DJ would use?
What a bunch of garbage.... "Storm Trooper Vents".... hahahahahahahha you owe me a new keyboard.... that was sooooo not funny.:sqwink:
Thunder 05-18-2008, 12:09 PM Wow,
Somebody had a bad experience with JBL
Jon Tuck 05-18-2008, 01:10 PM what a surprise.

It wasn't meant to be funny, I'm just stating what I feel is obvious. I just don't find these as a professional looking speakers: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://digitalmedia.jhu.edu/files/Image/JBL_EON10%2520_G2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://digitalmedia.jhu.edu/node/220&h=500&w=355&sz=19&hl=en&start=11&um=1&tbnid=4oa3R7wqO0_TpM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=92&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djbl%2Beon%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client %3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN

Here is the latest EON model: http://www.unitedmaskandparty.com/Character_Heads_And_Helmets/images/stormtrooper_formed_helmet.JPG :sqlaugh:
JBL makes some great stuff. The SRX speakers are absolutely great, the MRX's aren't bad either. I'm not a fan of the PRX powered line. I think they're over-priced and aren't the best sounding. JBL put too much concentration on making it lightweight and not enough on the sound quality (as experienced with the PRX 18" sub).
jokerswild 05-18-2008, 10:25 PM Ok JBL EONs venting is above the speaker http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document?cpd=0OEY&doc_id=99371&base_pid=600200&index=2
And Mackies is below http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document?cpd=0OEY&doc_id=99371&base_pid=605255&index=0
What makes either look more professional????? I see no difference in the professional look of either of these two speakers systems... and IMHO both systems sound great....
Fred Stewart 05-18-2008, 10:45 PM They all look like snot in a wind tunnel to me. Plastic is for toys, not professional speaker systems. :D
The passive Eons ain't bad for what they cost. Just don't push 'em too hard. As with any speaker system you've got to EQ and process 'em right to get a good tone. I haven't seen the actives at work so I can't comment on them.
