Hey guys, its that time when my brain starts ticking and my wallet is itching for new gear. Well perhaps mabye not right this second, as a new laptop is my current concern, but prior to the school season starting back I'd like to add 1 18" powered sub to my lineup. Currently I have 2 SWA1501 subs and they handle most of the gigs I do, but I feel 1 18" would be easier and would pack more punch than the 2 15s and would be a start towards the 2 18"s I want for next years prom season, to run along with my mackies.

The 2 subs in question are the following:

QSC HPR181i- Powered 18" Sub

Yorkville LS800PB- Powered 18" Sub

I've used 2 of the HPRs and I gotta admit that theyre very pleasing and powerful and manageable units.

What do you guys think?

Both units MAP out at about $1200 each. It would appear that the LS800PB is nearly twice as many watts as the QSC but then again, watts mean nothing right? I don't know. I'd like some feedback so i can get a plan together.

I just picked up 2 HPR181i's and they are great. I used to run 2 Mackie 1501's but they were lacking for larger events. I think the LS800p is great sounding but too large. I can't fit 2 of them in my SUV without using up all the room for other equipment.

I believe the wattage given by the LS800p is Peak watts (for marketing). I hear good things about them though. I did a review of several powered subs and posted it on this board. Not a scientific / pro review but my opinion.

I use a pair of Yorkville LS 808. I'm very happy with them. They are the passive LS 800p. I'm using a Peavey CS 3000 amp with them. They hit hard and sound awesome. Because they are a horn loaded sub. The throw is long. You can feel bass hitting you from a good distance away. This is not the case with a bass reflex cab. One problem with the LS 800p is the weight. That why I got the passive types. They weight about a 115 lbs. I have heard the the new LS 800p are having problems with the built in amps. So maybe the QSC sub would make for a better choice. My tops are QSC 153i and I love them. QSC makes great speakers that you can count on to perform night after night. At this time I can't say the same Yorkville. I think the Yorkville is the better sounding sub of the two. If you don't mine running a passive sub. Then the Yorkville LS 808's are the way to go. But if you want active subs then go with the QSC subs. The Yorkies do hit harder at a longer distance and will peak 3 db more then the QSC will.

I agree! I bought my Yorkville's LS 800 back in 2005 or early 06. They work and play very hard. Yorkville made changes to the newer versions. They threw in another driver to bring down the weight, I don't know exactly what they did with the amp. I did a party with a DJ buddy who took his sub out of the box for the first time at the gig and it cut off 4 times on us that night.
I love my Yorkies, but the next best choice would be the QSC 18" sub.
