DJ Stacy Zemon 05-30-2008, 02:55 PM I'm DJing a 17 year old girls birthday party in a couple of weeks. This will be the first time in quite a while that I've done a youth event. If anyone could recommend maybe the top 25 songs for this age group (I assume there will be boys there too), I'd really appreciate it!
Jon Tuck 05-30-2008, 03:02 PM I would like to direct you Stacy to the music forum and Cams top 20 for some of the hottest most current perhaps look back a month or two as these are songs more mainstream now and Cams list is ahead of current for his nightclub stuff. Lollipop,Love In This Club, Chris Browns latest-Forever, 4 Minutes -Madonna and Justin,Ray Jyung Berg-Sexy Can I, Canada's own Kardinal Offishal-Dangerous,Rihanna-Take A Bow, Miley Cyrus- See you Again to name a few.
A DJ of your stature hopefully has informed the client that you might not know all the current hits and that you will rely on a awesome forum like ODJT to assist you in making their event a success. Oh and one other Novel thought your local areas top 40 Radio Charts likely will cover most of their needs especially if regional likes and dislikes come into play google or visit their site for the best list.. Thanks!

Gee, do I dedect a note of sarcasm here?
Actually, I would not inform the client of such a thing. I would do my homework (as I am starting to do here) and show up prepared. Oh, and I do get the mainstream radio subscription to Promo Only, so I am also prepared for on-the-spot requests.
Also, from the client's perspective, they don't really care what chat boards I learn from or share with. I am aware that there are other resources for me to obtain the information from, but I thought I might have received a friendlier response here. Feel free not to answer any of my questions anymore, okay Jon?
DJ Stacy Zemon 05-31-2008, 06:56 AM Thanks to everyone who took the time to share their info...I feel all set! :sqlaugh:
jokerswild 05-31-2008, 09:02 AM I feel for ya Stacy... I'm up for my first youth event next Saturday which will be a graduation party on the beach at a beach house.... I've been boning up on the newer music but when I got the music request list there was a lot of what in my day would have been called heavy metal.... I'm gonna like this gig....:)
Lots of Korn, Disturbed, Bullet For My Valentine, Panic! At The Disco, Metalica, AC/DC, etc....
Probably not good music for your party but mine is going to love it.
Thunder 05-31-2008, 10:36 AM I generally try to stay away from the 17 year old girls, it is not that hard to wait until they turn 18.

You're sooooooo bad!!!!!!
GoodKnightDJ 05-31-2008, 11:13 AM I'm DJing a 17 year old girls birthday party in a couple of weeks. This will be the first time in quite a while that I've done a youth event. If anyone could recommend maybe the top 25 songs for this age group (I assume there will be boys there too), I'd really appreciate it!
Stacy, I feel very flattered that you have asked folks on this board for assistance.
Two suggestions, The Cupid Shuffle and Crank Dat.
SoftJock Rick 05-31-2008, 11:13 AM The legal age in NY is 17 -- any way I can help out...? :sqlaugh:
Ron Auger 05-31-2008, 12:21 PM not only are we 3 hours behind the Mainland (ca) in time,,, we take awhile to catch up with music! LOLI hear ya Chuck. How are you Islanders enjoying that new dance craze "The Electric Slide"?
Jon Tuck 05-31-2008, 03:34 PM IF you looked beyond what you perceived as sarcasm or in negative light you would have seen I shared several proper choices. However I have been known to be brutally honest when it comes to music and gig preparation.
We dont always know everything about every new event for which we book but if Im not up on the music, I allow my client to know where I am with their very important music of choice. I certainly dont wait just a couple weeks in advance to get an exhausted list from folks somewhere out there on this large planet. I do at times mention that I network with DJs from all over the world discussing world trends in party coordination and music ideas to assist in staying current with my clients needs. Sometimes they like that I have resources such as this and seminars, conventions etc to increase my knowledge.
One last thing.
Though I use ideas presented by you and others here, when selecting songs for kids in my area usually I rely heavily on the local music format as well and it has served me well. Example at a wedding here I would play Rasputin and it work everytime if I suggested you use it in your neck likely it would bomb miserably. Cha Cha Slide never worked here but Follow the leader was a smash hit. Get my point?
No need to throw my contribution aside amidst what you might perceive as sarcasm.
:sqwink:Gee, do I dedect a note of sarcasm here?

Thunder 05-31-2008, 04:01 PM Stacy,
I have been doing this a long time as well and one thing I always do when contracting a gig is send out a song request list, it gets me on an even keel with the people I will be playing for. I don't know what area you are playing in but here each different group may require a majority of music in a certain genre regardless of age, be it Country, Urban, Rock, Pop or oldies even a group of high school kids can throw you for a loop from time to time.
kevwebny 05-31-2008, 07:00 PM Stacey ask the client for a playlist or some suggestions. most 17 year olds have ipods and access to the net. IF YOU HAVE DIRECT TV THEY HAVE A MUSIC STATION CALLED THE HEAT. It plays all the latest stuff and it is also on sat radio. I also look at billboards top 100 and promo only hit list and itune will show u the top downloads int he country. good luck
Scott Hanna 06-01-2008, 03:09 PM anytime I do a teen party, I just go to the billboard top 20 and make sure i have all of those. that and my normal collection always works well.
ian23 06-02-2008, 10:09 PM artists
rihanna
cris brown
soulja bow
neyo
my chemical romance
akon
mariah carey - touch ma body
that's pretty much i can think of right now... hehehe
Travis B 06-02-2008, 11:19 PM Scott,
We ALWAYS print out a list of the Billboard top 40 before we head out to the gig. Sometimes I have brain farts and can't pick a song. I use billboard to keep me on track :)
Mr. K 06-03-2008, 01:10 AM I just did a teen event, and the three most popular requests were, in this order:
1) "SLOW SONGS"
2) AMERICAN IDIOT
3) SWEET HOME ALABAMA
captd108 06-04-2008, 01:40 AM if they're in the nj/ny area just go to z100.com and look at their playlist and their top 20, it's on the right hand side. You can't go wrong with those. country is a big no no round here, and the cupid shuffle hasn't really gotten big yet. Cha cha slide will work, and if the girl is from the central or northern area of jersey they might be into "techno" as well.
