What would you like to see?

DJ Dan

With the new forum software installed we have much greater flexablilty for add ons and hacks. Truthfully, if you know anything about forum software you know that vB is much easier to modify and hack than any other software out there.

The absolute first thing I have to do is change the style of this board, vB's default theme definetly has a lot to be desired. I seen a DJ related theme a while back.. I'll have to try and find it.

The first addon I'll be adding is an arcade with flash based games. It's been successful on other forums, I've installed it on and its a fun time waster. :) Look for that very soon.

vB has a couple of portal systems like I briefly had on the previous software. I'll look into implementing that.

The only question remaining is:

What would you like to see?

Okay so it's been a couple of hours, well more than a couple of hours of searching and modifying code. As far as I know everything I've changed is working as it should.

Here is a quick run down of what's been done:

Changed the theme from vB's default
Added arcade
Added shoutbox which you'll see on forum home
Manually changed all user accounts to use the enhanced post editor
Lastly, I added the scrolling marquee which you should see on every page

That's it for today folks.. Time to go swimming! :D

Hey Dan!
The Forums looks awsome now!

Except I had to change the view to the line mode.

Other than that I would leave it like this!

Dan That was me!
It apperntly didnt accept my new password!
Well if unregistered people can do that could result in spamming. Dont get me wrong the forums are awsome this way but unregistered users acces to the boards?

I see what you mean. :) Actually I purposely set the permissions for this board to allow guest posting but it's only on the Feedback board. If we start getting spammed, I can just disable guest posting.

By the way, I merged the two posts for ya ;)

I think a bottom feeder plugin would be nice... a simple flash game that allows you (as the adjradio.com commercial suggests) to fry them in cajun sauces!

I may have to move away from the current sites theme and get something better. For three reasons:

It's buggy, I had to manually fix some code.
It's a bitch to modify. You should've seen the run around I had just adding a few buttons to the navigation header.
I don't think this dark theme really fits us at ODJT.What would yous like to see, a light theme? Lighter is normally better for users friendly-ness. I'm always open to suggestions.

PS: I'll shortly be announcing two more domains pointing here. It'll make getting here a little easier.

vBulletin released their newest forum software a couple of days ago and I spent all morning upgrading, I'm still exploring some of the new options so I'll let you know what's up once I figure it out. :)

Some of the new features you'll notice are:

New theme: I found a DJ related theme and in my opinion it's great! I'd rather the red highlights be a blue. Maybe I'll play around with the graphics a bit. I've set the new skin as the default.

Multi-quote: You click the little + sign at the bottom of more than one post and reply to the thread.. this automatically inserts the posts of the users you've quoted.

Give Thanks: You'll see a little thanks button by each thread. If you want to thank someone but have nothing to add to the thread just click. :)

So, what are you guys thinking about the latest updates? I'm liking it on the admin side. :) There's still a couple of features I haven't played with yet.

Two things: The arcade (http://www.ourdjtalk.com/arcade.php) high scores were lost in the upgrade, I tried to avoid this but I messed up. You live and ya learn. :tshirt:

I'm considering getting rid of the shoutbox, its slowing down the loading of the index page. Do you guys like it that much?

Umm.. that's all I have to say for now. I bought 2 more domains pointing to this board but my host boinked the settings so I'm waiting the DNS records to update.

do you have to click the last button to do a quick reply? That's bothersome to me... Sure i'm a stickler... just an extra step i don't think has to be there... or is it just for the different views... i honestly have seen the vbulletin acp in a while.

Fixed.. It's one of those annoying little things that didn't convert right. The upgrade installer also crashed the database twice (always make backups!) and screwed around with some of my permissions. :(

The ACP is getting bogged down with all the stuff there adding, most of it is of no use to me or most boards I'd imagine.

I'm pretty sure everything other than that is working correctly, I haven't poked around in vB's default template much so if something seems out of order let me know.

One interesting addition is the user infraction system, sort of like regular users being able to moderate each other. I haven't enabled it yet, because a whole other permissions system goes with that.

Another interesting thing is the ability to import RSS feeds as new threads, I'm going to try and sydication adja radio in it's own forum. That's my task for tomorrow.. I've been working on this place and helping someone else upgrade to 3.6 pretty much all day

Dan in my opinion I would like to see our dj talk stay put. Everything changes everyday. From one day to another. You see different templates, colors, etc. Can we keep it put :p.

Are we set with our title and avatar on the left side? I think it says to much on the side. Like the thanks thingie. It says how many thanks and in how many posts. There is a lot of stuff under our avatar. The arcade thing.

Blogs would be a nice thing but would that slow down the server? Should Maybe only administrators, Super Mod, and Moderators only have blogs and maybe members with over 800 post's just an idea.

The Shout box is cool

Maybe the sub-nics thing should only be for mods or something beacause we might have people PM'ing mods to change there sub-nic which would become a hassle all the time. And if pepople did it them selves they could put "Moderator" or "Adminstrator".

I think all of the section on the website are excellent

Maybe a newbie section where all the new people can seek advice. JTV can mod it since he is good at training newbies. :)

Thanks Dan,
Brian

Good stuff.

I did add an extra theme but didn't set it as the default. All the members seem to like this skin (DJ-red), I'm happy to keep it set as default. The new theme added (SmartBlack) is a dark skin. I've gotten more than a few complaints that this skin is to bright, so at least the option is there to view the site in a different skin.

As for the posters information on the left side, that's how it was done on old forums. I'm thinking before vB 3.0 (Bounce..maybe you know?). Personally, I think it sets us apart from other boards. I don't want to look like every other plain vanilla board out there. As a websurfer, I cannot stand visiting an "install and run site" where the webmaster installs everything than leaves it at the defaults. vB is the most powerful forum software available, it doesn't come cheap but there are still minor tweaks that can be made. Hence, I've been spending a lot time behind the scenes tweaking every little thing I can.

That being said, all the time I spend tweaking I rarely get the time to test in other browsers and resolutions. I personally run a high resolution so the layout looks okay to me.. Start a poll in announcements, see if people want the poster information on top or the side. I'll go by the results of that. As for the games in postbit, I have to option to remove them and was already considering doing so. ;)

The custom user titles are going to stay, I think it adds to the open community aspect. I've made a post in the annoucments forum explaining things to newbies. I've set it up that by default anyone can change their title. Supermods or Mods cannot edit others users profile with me giving them access to the ACP.. I'm just not comfortable opening up the ACP even with permissions "locked down".

Blogs are just an idea I was kicking around and haven't gotten any feedback on. We will eventually roll out a shared blog for aDJrevolution (on that domain). If we did start blogs via this site, each one would have a subdomain on bestdjsonline.com all in all the software (Wordpress) isn't very server intensive.

We're still a very new website, since we've started I've added a couple of boards, these were added on the fly. I don't anticipate adding new forums right now, we'll see what happens. That being said, I kind of figured the teen board was for newbies. We have about 10 forums as it is, with such a small membership; Do we really want to keep breaking down posting areas?

I've had contact from a webmaster asking for a dedicated forum and I refused. Only because it was basically the webmaster being a cheap SOB, his forums constantly crash because he doesn't want to pay for a decent host. The only thing he could offer me is maybe 20 new members which all in all isn't worth the aggravaton of creating a new forum, bringinng on a new mod (the forum's former admin) and I could see from the get-go he and I would be butting heads all the time.

Dan I think the Thanks Thing is wierd :p. Why do we want to know how many times we have been thanked and in how many post's. Hi guys,

It is really great to be here guys. You have done a great job!

There are couple things that I would really like to see. If we could have a wedding forum that would be great.

The other is just an idea, but it would be nice to have the site just for DJs and people that will actually state where their company is.

Just my 2 cents. Thanks.

Carolyn.. IMO the "where your company is" would be under introductions.
Wedding forum could be a nice supplement since we have an Bar DJ Club area, however, what about school djs, we have a teen forum... At this time, i think we have too many forums for the small amount of members we currently have. Adding more could add confusion to the site.

Dan the site looks good

Maybe there should be a few sections left private like the big show section etc. So it would make the members want to join here.

Just a Thought.

I like that the shout box is private. Is the shoutbox visible when the person registers then just comes here without submitting the activation link in there e-mail?

Other than that the forum looks awsome dan!

Travis B
08-20-2006, 03:22 PM
Having elements in my opinion hidden, would take away from the attribute of an open community... Even if we help a dj, even if he doesn't register, it still improves the industry, in a sense, however, we would like to intise members to join as they will be able to experience other interactive parts of the site, which dan and possibly I may be working on in the future.

Hey, I just thought of something. It is necessary for us, as DJs, to have resources; for example, I keep a handy list of the fifteen most reliable online shops from which to purchase vinyl, and Brian B has links to handy dandy new music charts.

In other words, while we do not mind posting things like, "Hey, so-and-so brand of speaker stand is pretty good," perhaps, for other things, we should post things like, "I have a very reliable list of online vinyl record retailers--any member of OURDJTALK may contact me for more info."

Eh?

For now, anyway, I am keeping my post with the record shop links available.

This is true and why I've kept all boards open but at the same time we need to give people some incentive to sign up. In viewing the server logs, I can see about 50 people or so have come in during the past week and viewed threads but none of them have signed up.

I didn't read every reply, but I would llike a Noobie section. Ok, name it something politically correct, but my point is the same:

A Noob FRIENDLY area where ANY Noob ? can be asked, and answered by those who especially don't mind helping noobs. I know that "some" folks hate reading post from noobs. I know that some noobs feel intimidated to ask some questions.........

And make damn sure that THAT particular borad is FRIENDLY, as we want to ENCOURAGE people to grow as DJs. Hell, we were all noobs at one time..... and I even feel like one after my layoff. Make it known that ANY hostility in that one board will be moderated out or something similar. Just for that ONE BOARD.

Actually, I have a pack of over 1100 games sitting on another server. The problem is I don't know which are doubles. I have see what games we have now, and compare the two then remove the doupes.

Plus with all those games there are bounded to be a few that don't work and that going to make bulk installing them a headache.

I have a few more paid jobs to tie up, then I'll start working on the arcade. :)

I'm probably in the minority on this one, but I use the "Thanks" button not only for people who I agree with, but for people that I disagree with.:sqerr:

Just because I may not agree with them doesn't mean that their post was not valuable to me and that I may have learned something from them.

Jest my opinion! :D

I use it much the same way, just because I don't 100% agree with something doesn't mean I didn't glean good information from the post. I also thank funny posts.

Some people just like extra buttons. :D Seriously though there's another system we can use for agreeing/disagreeing with another persons' post, I have to read up on it though. That shouldn't take too long. :sqwink:

Not a problem with me either way...more buttons or not! :sqeek:

My personal opinion is the "Thanks" button is a "positive" tool....

Thanks,

Kirby

How about making the logo at the very top of the screen a link to the Forum Home link? That's a pretty common feature on a lot of vBulletin forums I visit.

The only thing I really want to see here that I haven't seen yet is DJ Sue doing a nude modeling pose on her Harley!

I think a popup window that is displayed when we have a new PM is in order. This is the ONLY forum I visit that doesn't have this feature.

I get pop ups--the pop ups pop up when I pop up over to pop up another page, or if I pop up to re-pop up the existing page.
