Precisionpower 06-16-2008, 11:11 PM Have you ever done a school dance????
If not, you better do your homework.......
Otherwise, the kids will hammer you with the big "You Suck"
Just a fore warning.
Chuck The DJ 06-16-2008, 11:27 PM I bet it is too late now, but it is always good to get a request list for each school ahead of time.... I can do two schools in the same town and the music is totally different....
You would need to go farther back with the Promo Only I would think...
Put a request list out for them to sign up at the start of the dance, work off that... keep it as clean as you can for that age group...
kevwebny 06-17-2008, 12:54 AM I will take your advice thanks. I will use jbl eon g2s and two jbl 18inch powered subs and leave the good stuff at home the bose. Havent done a scool funtion since I was around 13 years old. I have done many holloween and birthday parties sweet 16 and such even block parties. Will there be many adults /parents at these functions?
jkcomputers 06-17-2008, 07:02 AM Start off with what ever you want, leave out a piece of paper and let the kids go wild.... they will fill the sheet up for you.... just make sure you got it all...
Abbey Lane 06-17-2008, 08:14 AM I did a school dance two weeks ago and they give me an "Urban" dance song list.
When I started playing, they wanted country.
knardini 06-17-2008, 08:55 AM What's playing on the local hip-hop radio station? Play that, then go to itunes and make sure to have a good portion of the top 100, then get the clean versions of the top urban hits on itunes and you should be good.
Make sure to have some of the stand by's:
Jump on it - Mix a lot
Cotton eyed joe (cheesy as hell but everyone will dance to it)
Sandstorm (a good techno hit to get em moving)
Cha cha
Cupid shuffle
Baby got back
Thriller
2 step remix
Walk it out
Lean wit it
Crank that.....batman, jumprope, spongebob, spiderman
lollipop (clean version)
love in da club
My dougie
Move shake drop
it's going down
Ride a cowboy
macarena...
Don't forget the classics: (may not work depending on the crowd)
Mony mony
shout
staylin alive
YMCA.....
Sometimes I'll even tell them I have a new song that is so hot it hasn't even hit the radio yet...a new dance song like soulja boy...and they get to dance to it first here....then I play the hokey pokey....they ALWAYS dance to it as a nice little break from the rap.
Interact with them from the get go and you'll have them in your pocket!
Good luck!

djxpress 06-18-2008, 08:38 PM Ours schools have been out since the end of May; why so late on school dances...:sqconfused:
Could be year round or summer programs.
kevwebny 06-19-2008, 08:16 AM schools are still in to the end of June in new york public schools
kevwebny 06-20-2008, 01:17 AM less than 60 people at each event but all were on the dance floor for the majorIty of the events.HaD to pay 18$ for parking.Load in time was a breeze thanks to the rock n roller cart and some new bungee cords. Elevator to 3rd floor. I used two L1's and four B1's under my table. I used a facade made of black cloth like carpet used on speakers to hide the subs and wires. bose were great and I used the remote's and preset 58. I used a sure 58 mic on input two and preset 14. Laptop w/virtual dj pro 5.06 and hercules mkII w/ rca to xlr out to bose channel one. Sounds clear and better than my usual dj mixer the b-52 prodigy fx.
great party gave out a lot of cards.
the most requested song for the 8th graders was doo doo brown by luke
and the fifth graders wanted something called 5000 which i didnt have and a song called saucey that i did not have. The kids responded w/ excitment to alOT OF the other songs that were played and iT gave me great joy.
I will post more later and some cell phone pics later when i figure out how to get them off the phone to the computer two tired to type.
