Mobile Beat Question

Mobile Beat...and various other music vendor catalogs.

I just started receiving Mobile Beat this year and I am wondering: for those who have been receiving the magazine for years, do you find it to be more of a helpful resource (tips for DJing, doing better business) or more as a guide for learning about some of the newer products on the market?

I have yet to formulate an opinion yet as I have only received 3 issues, but I'm just wondering what other DJs use it for.

Anna I think that Mobile Beat is great because of the Variety they do rotate their fluff a bit as every magazine does but you can usually find something worth reading. I do like to read columns about DJ skills, ideas and marketing

I like to see the mugs of Ben and the Crew

I like equipment reviews although we do get a lot of vendor stuff, videos, desciption pieces etc direct from companies a little before they get published.

For the mobile scene its pretty darn good.

I dropped my subscription several years ago after it got to the point there was more advertising and hype than there was real substance.

It comes free with ADJA membership. I'd probably purchase it anyway.

I like it because it's aimed at the Mobile DJ, whereas DJ Times is aimed more at the club DJ.

For that reason, it may be more beneficial to go to a MobileBeat show rather than DJ Times. Alas, I live in NJ, so I've always gone to AC, and wished I could go to Vegas...

It comes free with my adverts :)

I do enjoy looking through it though. I read what articles might concern my company, and I like seeing the ads for new toys. Since I'm on the other side of this business from the DJ, it behooves me to keep an eye on what is happening on the mobile scene, as I don't deal much with the club scene.

90% of my customers don't visit DJ chat boards, but a large portion reads MB ;)

Also, I like to see what kind of trouble the good doctor and crew are getting into these days :sqlaugh: :sqwink:

I had found there is no real information in Mobile Beat. Their writers are very narrow minded. It also seems that they favor any equipment that buys advertising. Their annual gear review is a joke.

While I can see yer point to an extent Cam -- it's the same with any magazine, TV show, etc.

Subscription fees don't pay near enough to produce any of them, so advertising pays most of the costs.

Do you bite the hand that feeds you...? For example, you work a lot of clubs -- would you put your name on an in print article, that says that one of your weekly establishments suck?

The trick is to read between the lines of the reviews and such, IMHO... ;)

I like some of the equipment reviews and when they do the top song lists. I also get mine for free through the ADJA.

there is only ONE issue worth buying: the one that contains the MB 200.

I just got a freebie year from my Amazon Wishlist and this is the first time I've read the mag in a few years - sad to say I feel it hasn't evolved and still has the same old faces waffling on about the same old thing.

I truly believe it is crap and more can be learned at chat boards (like this) all you have to do is ask a question and you will doubtless receive instant gratification

Once again egos prevail and the first nice thing I hear about Bruce Keslar is the death announcement - sad.

Too much fluff and me me - magazines and newspapers are dying fast

I think the next brainwave for Mobile Beat should be Pet of the Week and the Fat Bastards Recipe Corner.....

I've been writing for MB for 5+ years now. I've never been told to give a good review for an advertiser. I can't speak for the other writers but I've written good & bad things in every review I've done. I don't read all the reviews but the ones I do read seem impartial to me.

I don't know - the last article was VERY slanted toward DJ Intel for comfort...

I don't know if MB edited what I wrote but here's what I sent:

An example of a call to action on a DJ website is an availability checker. A prospective bride is perusing your website, skimming the text and looking at the pictures when she sees a box that says “Select your event date to instantly check availability. Request additional information at no obligation.”

Without even really thinking about it, she inputs her wedding date. It brings up a new page that says “Good news--we are available for the date of your event! The next step is to get a free, instant price quote using our automated online system.” On this page it’s asking for her contact information and information about her wedding. She enters in all the information so she can receive her instant price quote. The best part about this is this can be done from anywhere at anytime—whether she’s at work and can’t make calls from there about her wedding or it’s 2am and there’s no way she’ll get someone on the phone, she can get a price quote.

After she hits submit, a new page comes up with her price quote. She can stop there or go even one step further and hit the ‘book online’ button at the bottom of the page. Using that button she can print a contract and even pay her deposit online with a credit card. If she decides she wants to think about it a little more or possibly talk to the DJ company before booking now at least the DJ company has her information to follow-up. Without all these calls to action she might’ve just bookmarked the site to check out again before booking her DJ and maybe she would never get back to the site.

Tell me how that's slanted towards DJ Intelligence? Did I even mention DJ Intelligence? Did I say DJI is awesome? Did I even comment on if I like it? No, all I was doing was giving an example of tools you can put on your website.

I think you're grabbing at straws with your post.
