Looking for ideas.... planning to market "oldies" dances....

Papa Deuce

I'm going to creat a website for my business that features just "oldies".... from the 50's - 90's. I'll be particularly focusing on the 70's and 80's, while the other decades will not be featured as much.

So, I am looking for ideas for a business card and a logo......but any ideas, including marketing, I'll be happy to listen.

Not yet. It could be yours. (it was a suggestion) :sqwink:

I always have ideas. :sqwink:

I just thought that since you won't be locked into one decade, that you would want a name with more elbow room. If you like that name, I'll knock it around in Photoshop. If not, I'll wait til' you're ready.

What do the arrows mean?

And I would like 70's, 80's and 90's, if that's OK.

I'll supply you a phone number.

BTW, besides pay, I see some BBQ sauce headed your way! :sqwink:

What do the arrows mean?

I am sure that potential clients could associate the arrows with going "back"; however, they are also going down, so they can indicate the act of "getting down."

I think that the logo is awesome. May I suggest making the record a little bit smaller, so that it would be the same size as a regular "O"?

Papa Deuce

I like the bottom one if we can make the writing a little more plain.

Mr. K

OK...you're talking to Mr. Retro here (actually, it's Mr. K, but you know...), and the style of first one (with a smaller record) is much more appealing.

Well... I've been waiting an opportunity to speak in this forum. Since none has yet been presented I will speak anyhow. :D

Papa, "oldies" has a broad meaning to audiences. In reality, '70s and '80s are not "oldies". These decades are better referred to as "retro".

"Oldies" is best left to refer to music that was released when the Baby Boomers' parents were young and still partying. That's mid '60s and before. Pre-Beatles as it were.

I dunno about rock but I can definately share some suggestions for Country music. Remember, Country is the oldest form of American popular music. It existed long before Bill Haley and Elvis stole the style of artists that Motown picked up later.

American Country music has influenced everyone from ABBA to ZZ Top. Popular styles can be found in some of the old Bluegrass tunes that were written back in the 1930s. Gosh, look at Hank Williams, Jr. He's made a fortune on his Daddy's songs. He ain't alone.

My suggestion would be to get some Legion and VFW shows. Play what they like, get what you don't have and give the music some thought. These folks can be very loyal and they'll give you the best references.

I know you don't like Country. Neither did I at one time. But it's big and has a long history behind it. Besides, Country still has real musicians playing real instruments. And you can dance to it. How about that? ;)

Fred, that is why the name Hank came up with works better that what I was looking at.

BTW, I like new country and SOME old cold country... I like Johnny Cash and Duane Eddy. I LOVE Patsy Cline.

Oh, we had a station that called itself an oldies station here in Phlliy.... they played TONS of 70's music.

while nothing is there yet, www.retrospins.com is now registered by me.

Sorry, Johnny!

Well, there you are. I'm sure Uncle Rick will add his thoughts. ;)

In the meantime, old or classic country isn't just Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Patsy Cline. George Jones is in there, too.

Also, there are:

Ronnie Milsap
Ricky Skaggs
The Osborne Brothers
Marty Stuart (old country with a new flair)
Kentucky Headhunters/Brother Phelps
John Conlee
Brenda Lee
Porter Wagoner/Dolly Parton
Statler Brothers
Eddy Arnold
"Whispering" Bill Anderson
Roger Miller

There are many more. Here's a good collection: Amazon.com: Country Stars on C.D.: 62 Hits: Various Artists: Music

Sorry, Johnny!

Hey, I just added a little thing on my You Tube video from last Friday's 50th anniversary party: "Coincidentally, The Vinyl Spinner is able to provide the closest thing to an authentic 'retro' dance."

Ha! So there!! :)

Hank, I like that. Go with it.... if you can just add a name and phone number that I gave you...

Only question I have is, do you think the word "dance" should be in the line with the 70's, 80's....?

Also, shouldn't it be "apostrophe" s for the decades? Not 100% sure...

70's 80's

1. So, set it up like a card?

2. So, "The 70's, 80's & 90's Dance Specialists" ? (may seem like you teach dance) We could do Retro Spins DJ Service - "Specializing In 70's, 80's & 90's Dances" ??? Parties? Events?

3. Not sure about the punctuation. I've seen it so many ways. I think it's '70s, but we can either do it the way you want or check with Bryan Durio. :sqwink:

4. What about color?

Instead of Dance... how about Party... I like that.

I checked... you need the apostrophe.

I would love a B & W copy as well as a colored version... you pick a color.

I'll be using the RetroSpins part as my logo for a web page. And I will be making business cards as well....

Thanks.

Love it! But can I also see it with a "hot" pink and a yellow background? Like the yellow used in the 70's for Smiling Faces?

Just want to see what color I like best, but I definitely love it!

Between 3 colors, one will hit me the best, I am sure.

I also need just the B & W, version for a cling decal, I would think.

I could do that, but it may take your eye off the company name.

If you want all three backgrounds, I can include them. The logo for the web can be transparent so you can drop it on any of the colors.

My honest opinion is that the arrows show no consistency in these latest cards.

My first reaction is, "Where do I go?"

Can I do Retro-Spins Eh! ?

Seriously, I'm going to give this some thought. I'd like to include 50's and 60's.

Anyone have thoughts on names?

Oh, I will too, but I didn't want to overload the graphic. Hank came up with RetroSpins, which I really love.

My original idea was to call it ThatOldiesDance.com ... which is available.

RetroSpins.ca? ..... and then we can link to each other's sites... :sqwink:

Papa, you should have no trouble. 40% of my annual events are "theme" dances (50s, 70s & 80s) . I have quite a few clients that rent the local VFWs and such for them. They sell tickets for $25 and we eat, drink & dance.

Simply the best!
