Randy A 07-25-2008, 10:43 PM Be kind to me mods until I can find an answer.
I have a file --- my original logo artwork. When I upload the file (gif) into PS CS2, I'm not able to do anything with it because it's locked.
Is there anyway to unlock the file, so I can make some changes to it?
WaydeWest 07-25-2008, 10:53 PM You won't be able to change the actual picture itself because it is a .gif, if you had the original .psd file you could do whatever you want to it. What you can do is add stuff to the picture, apply filters and such, cut and paste. You can really still do whatever you want to it, it will just take a bit more work.
Think of it this way, with a logo in photoshop, a .gif or .jpg file is just like you had a photo in front of you, you can only work with what is in the picture or what you add to it. With the original layered .psd file, it's like you are working on the actual live scene, before the photo is taken. Don't like that oval in my logo...click and it's gone, whereas if I only had a .gif or .jpg I'd have to mask out, or basically paint over, the oval.
Randy A 07-25-2008, 10:55 PM Ah, I understand now. I'll see if I can round up the original file. Thanks!

Travis B 07-25-2008, 11:35 PM Take that locked layer and drag it into the new layer button, it'll create a duplicate, delete the locked layer (drag it to the trash can next to the new layer button). Perform that necessary changes.
Randy A 07-25-2008, 11:45 PM It will let me drag it into the new layer button. :(
Would anyone be interested in trying to duplicate the logo in ps, so I can work with it?

How complicated is it? Post a copy.

WaydeWest 07-26-2008, 12:37 AM That's a fairly easy logo to work with. You should be able to use the magic selection tool to select, for instance, the word "party" and copy it to it's own layer, then rotate it, filter it, whatever. Perhaps I'm not fully following what you mean by "locked".
Here's something...just playing around late at night with some simple effects...

I have no idea what changes you actually want, just showing that it is possible to work with what you have. I just copied the gif you posted and did what I said above...magic selection tool (actually I think it's called the magic wand tool) and rebuilt the layers.
Randy A 07-26-2008, 06:00 AM I'm just learning PS, so I'm not sure what I'm doing or what I'm doing wrong. When I open that same file, the layer is locked. In the layer tool, it's has a lock on the right hand corner. I can't do anything with it.
Thanks for helping.

Send me or tell me what the font is and I'll give you a hi-res layered copy.

Hank,
I'm not sure exactly what the font is. The guy that originally did it for me, is no longer living around here and I can't seem get into contact with him. (He gave me his email addy and phone, but it's been a couple of weeks and I can't get him to return my messages. I hope nothing is wrong with the guy, that's my worry.)
Anything real close would be fine. I've been using one called Clearface Gothic that seems to match fairly well. I could rebuild it (after a long time) but I can't seem to find the music note either. Ugh!
One of these days, I'll scrape up the cash to have you re-do a new logo for me, but I better start paying off some of the new toys before I do that. :)
Don't go out of your way. I realize time is money to all of us.

Request Line Productions 07-26-2008, 06:35 PM I have the music notes from when I worked on the original for you. I'll find the font or try the one you mentioned.
Randy A 07-26-2008, 07:02 PM I'm thinking it may be Franklin Goth, maybe. I seem to remember something Franklin.
I do remember you doing something for me a long time ago, what was it again? Heck, I forgot all about that. I may still have that file somewhere too.
Request Line Productions 07-26-2008, 09:29 PM OK Randy,
I have recreated your logo in Hi-Res (600dpi) and saved it as a layer in two PSD files. (Black & Green)
You can now add any effects you like. IE: Shadow, Glow, New Background, Etc
Here's a sample. I need your email addy to send you a zip folder containing the PSD files.
Randy A 07-27-2008, 07:02 AM Thanks Hank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep in mind that if you want the inside white (between the outlines) to be clear, use the magic wand and delete it. Then "save as" something else. I'll keep a folder on you just in case.

You can upload a PNG file made from your PSD file to www.cafepress.com (http://www.cafepress.com/) and have lots of items made.
