What's the difference between Reps and Thanks? Are reps the only things that make your little meter go all 'softjock"?

Thanks add 1 rep point at a time. Actually repping someone by clicking on the justice scales could be much much more. It depends on how much the person has that is repping you. For instance if Rick reps you, you will get more points added to your rep than if I rep you because Rick has a better (higher) rep than I.

I feel like I'm talking in circles. Did that clear things up for you any?

Edited to Add:

If you open your User CP (http://www.ourdjtalk.com/usercp.php) and look at the 5th heading titled "Latest Reputation Given" beside that title, on the right you will see "Your Rep power is X" that means everytime you rep someone you give them those number of rep points. My rep power is 84, so when I just repped you Hank I gave you 84 points or the equilant of 84 thanks in 1 shot. That's why there's limits on how much a member can rep in each day.

Cesar maybe if you thanked more people, they would thank you more and youd have more points to consider in dinging. If you have 8000000 thanks like rick or papa, then 117 might not be as many, if you have 4 or 5 than it is...

for good candor i thanked you every time in this thread

Cesar,

There is some mathematical equation at state which involved voodoo economics, the rate of inflation, along with the other persons rep score logrithmically squared times the inverse cotangent of pi.

Truthfully to my knowledge not to discredit Dan, but Dan nor I fully understand the equation, and wading through the forum code could be exhaustive, our forum software is VBulletin, maybe try their forum to get an accurate answer.

Papa

What Papa was trying to say is that the meter under your user name represents your rep power (although nobody can explain what the colors translate to). So look at Papa's...his is worth 117, now look at mine...I am worth 33. Best I can figure, somebody with no gold bars has less than 30 rep points and the gold medal (Rick & Fred) has at least 130. That may sort of help you roughly determine somebodies rep power, especially if others chime in with their numbers so we can compare them to their meter.

So if I get dinged by the same person that is rated at 130 points - I loose 260 points because he doesn't agree with me.

Seems like a system that needs to have some checks and balances to it.

Or does it even matter at all? The visitors and members of this site can fairly easily tell who is worthy of a decent rep and those who aren't.

Rick - Well then, let's grab a six-pack, and have a chat! :sqwink:

I really dont know what to say about this crazy thread.
Breaking it down to school girl math for some that need it

Say you were a bully in elementary school
The teacher devised a plan whereas everytime you complimented someone you got a nickel but every time you were mean they took away 137 nickels, well eventually, and pretty quick for some, you're going to be out of nickels and actually owe nickels. So that will cost you hypothetically $6.85 every time you're mean to someone. You take 1 step forward and 137 steps back.

FYI- Dan and The admin staff/moderators did not design the software it is Vbulletin, while they pay to not have a freebie board that often goes slower there is only so much customization one can do with any software like this.

Instead of figuring out or trying to beat the system, do as it is intended and you wont have anyone dinging you.

DJ Dan
08-19-2008, 12:11 PM
That's why there are limits in place so people cannot abuse the system. For instance you cannot double rep some one. You cannot red rep someone then go to another one of their posts and red rep that, you have to rep a certain number of other people before you may rep the same person again.

Overall the system is pretty smart and haven't modified the defaults as I'm afraid of throwing off it's 'mojo'. :)

@Cesar if you go negative those green and gold bars turn red. I haven't see anyone in the red here.

DJ Dan

I'm not sure what situation you're referring to. Link me/explain or something. :)

Generally speaking we don't police rep. It's a member to member option just like private messages. If someone left you red rep for what ever reason it was based on their opinion. If someone is abusing the system by continually leaving just red rep or continually rep repping one member, we'll look into it.
