Nothing. If they have fun than that's what matters. Karaoke isn't about stars. Perhaps a bad singer will help motivate the stage fright folks who don't want to compete with the "stars."

This topic is the exact reason I never did Karaoke. Drinking + Singing = EEWWW!!! LOL

You are right having fun is great! Haven't you ever had a singer where you just wish you could hold your fingers in your ears.

No, I've only had ones that I want to hold their heads under water.:sqeek:

I just got back from a Christmas party for a local restaurant. I think they had the workers bring a guest. Total was about 30 people of mixed ages. We did karaoke and it went really well. It was a nice gig since everyone basically knew each other with few outsiders.

In a Christ Farley voice:

"Holy mackerel you SUCKKKK!! Oh look at me singing la-dee-FRIKKING-da! Keep singing like that and you'll be living in a VAN, DOWN BY THE RIVER!!"

Many times when I have a really bad singer I actually go outside and talk on the phone for a min.

When they are done I ask everyone for applause and remind them it's all about having a good time.

What is a really bad singer? Any person that has the nerve to get up in front of a crowd and belt it out is alright in my book!

Cam, has the right answer! ;>)

Also, you never know who the singer might be. One singer was so bad, we had even turned the mic off while he was singing. People were running from the room in tears, and we still had to move on when he was finished. Well, as he approached me with 3 more song slips, people in the bar offered me money not to take them from him, but its Karaoke plain and simple. As he came to me he said, "I know I suck but this is just so much fun!!" Turns out he gave me his business card and he wrote for the San Fransisco Cronicle. We got a great spread about how we handled him and the other singers in the club. and he also tipped us towards our charity we were collecting money for that day.
You never know who the singer might be, but always be polite no matter what. Thats our jobs as hosts I guess, "The Good-The Bad-And then the Real Bad Singers!!!!!(LOL!!!!) Give em another round of applause wont ya!!!!

I've got some CDs we made at one of my shows of some really bad singers. I'll have to figure out how to post some of the clips.

I third it!

I also say ( on mic) That was our own ------singin' her heart for you! ( it so happens my biggest fan/follower - with LOTS of friends- is a tone deaf female, hence the "her" )

However, my philosophy is " It's karaoke, not world hunger" and " It's not about sounding great, it's about having a great time" Note: The second quote was stolen from my friend, another host known as Geryoke, but I agree completely.

I always say "If any of us we're really good, we wouldn't be singing karaoke in a bar."

Never immediately after a bad singer though. :sqwink:

Ah Tact! It goes a long way. But what do you say when there are national acts dropping in on your shows, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jimmy Fortune, Dwayne Dupuy and Kenny Alphin. Do you make a statement like that when someone of this caliber is visiting LOL!

If it were Bob Dylan, yes I would. :sqwink: He's a much better songwriter than a singer, eh?

Little off topic but when I went to Cleveland in July of course had to stop in the Rock n Roll hall of fame. One of my Favs in Cleveland. Anyway the top floor is changed out regularly dedicated to different artists and it was Bob Dylan while I was there. Man has had an amazing career.

I have been running Karaoke shows long enough now that I have built an imunity to bad singers. I belive in evolution and I believe that my hearing has evolved to the point to cancel out bad singers. I can hear them only as background noise and their poor singing does not reach the conscience mind. I can still mix their mike and still not really hear their singing, just how the off-key song volume matches up to the on-key music.

Most of the time, bad singers know they are bad singers. Most of them get up their and make a big joke about it and it is entertaining. The bad ones are those who think they sing well and really bring down the show. They just suck and are not entertaining. I have had bad singer who can send a half a dozen non-singing patrons out of the bar to find better entertainment elsewhere. There is a fine balance between keeping the singing patrons happy and keeping the show entertaining for the non-singing patrons or to keep the waiting patrons entertained until their next turn.:sqcool:

Actually, one of my bars LOVES it when my tone deaf groupie shows up. They actually sell shots to almost the entire bar when she sings......

First of all, i respect EVERY single singer that has the courage to get up and sing.

What I can't stand is people who will heckle but won't get up and sing themselves..

Altho I used to have a lesbian friend when i frequented the karaoke bars in Vancouver.. Her main purpose in life was to embarass the hell out of me as often as she possibly could.

The most vivid memory I had was one night my singing was a little off, and someone out of the audience yelled "YOU SUCK DUDE!!" to which she got up on a table and yelled at the TOP of her lungs.. "James doesn't suck! I won't let him"

boy did my face ever turn red. *lol*

As for what I do when i get a really really bad singer.. I usually say something like "Thank you <insert name> for the most...interesting version of 'my way' I've heard in years. Everyone give them a hand for having the courage to get up and sing"

The host here just tells them they were good if they ask, if not, he claps and gets the next person up.

If no one claps, you either sucked or the song went for too long, or had a long outro.

If people clap, who cares. >_>

Second time you mentioned "the host here". Can you narrow that down to, say, a state? :sqlaugh:

Here's my take on bad singer's. I use the old addage "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"

I will always say after a song where I don't think they did a good job. "Thank you <insert name> Let's here it for <insert name> *start mock appaulding cause I'm using holding my wireless*"

Now if it's really bad , and I have the urge to wrap the microphone cord around their neck to make it stop, then I will usually try and force myself to say something like "Thank you <insert name> for the most interesting rendition of 'My Way' i've ever heard at karaoke" :sqlaugh:

Yes sometimes there are times when I feel like my ears are going to bleed to death, but i STILL don't care.

I have an immense amount of respect for anyone who has the courage to get up and sing in front of an audience. That's why I encourage everyone to applaud after every song, no exceptions.

just my two cents

None.

I looked up "hardest song to sing" in google, and there was a link to this thread so I joined up.

I just like going to karaoke's and I can play guitar and keyboard.. make music on computer sometimes too, I can't DJ anything though. ._.
