Is The Tux Dead?

Chuck The DJ

What do you think and why? I used to wear mine all the time, but now when I ask, I get shirt and tie or aloha wear.... well that comes with the territory. :)

Kirby Ball

I voted no, but I don't wear a "full" tux. I'm kind of in the middle "tux-wise".

I usually have a tux shirt, bow tie, vest and black dress pants. I don't wear a tux coat and not one of my customers has asked or required me to wear a jacket (I'd burn up in one anyway). They know how I will be dressed ahead of time.

For a couple of events, it has been black dress pants, white dress shirt with a regular tie.

Actually, I wish I could wear my "Hawaiian" shirts all the time..(Chuck, you're a lucky dog!).:sqwink:

I use a silly approach as to what I wear at a reception. I allow the client to choose. I have been asked to wear a tux, a suit, linen pants and shirt, shorts and flip flops, well you get the point. They pay, they choose my attire. It is ALL about the client.

Jamie

I'm with Jamie on this one. I always ask the client. I would feel real stupid(more than usual) if I dressed up in a tux and the whole wedding party was in tropical attire.:sqeek:

For me it depends on the occasion and venue. For weddings most of the time i wear a tux.

i always let the customer decide.

BTW,
I don't think the tux gave DJ's a bad name. A bad DJ in a stupid looking TUX(or anything else not professional, for that matter) doesn't help anyone, but i find it hard to believe that anyone was turned off to DJ's when the DJ showed up in a nice looking tux.

But the option is open for a tux, since I am starting to take the wedding market in this area!

I also agree on it depends the event. I however will reject wearing any silly costumes, like per say, bunny suit, banana, hot dog...lol! You get the picture!

But yea, I pretty much will wear whatever my client desires. Wether is a full on "hick" party, or a laid back, baggy pants party. I'll wear what the client is comfortable with.

Besides letting the customer pick, i think we need to be smart when the customer DOESN'T pick.
Take chuck's pics for example....i would think that most people that get married in Hawaii are incorporating the hawaiin or island theme. In that instance, dressing in a professional way while also having an "Island" vest is classy but fun.

Good Job Chucky!!

DJMC

Ironically......the ONLY time DJ-MC ever wore a tuxedo???

As a civilian.....

on Maui....

at the Ritz-Carlton (Kapalua), for a formal "black tie" dinner that was sponsored by my wife's company retreat.

Her company paid the $100 tux rental costs! I was very uncomfortable in this getup, but since all the other husbands were doing it, I went with the herd.

as a DJ? NEVER!!! (never been an issue with my customers)

My standard attire at weddings is a gray pinstriped suit & tie, very neatly attired but not too stuffy. I'm comfortable and always get compliments about my appearance from my clients.

We do not give the client the option to choose.

We dumped the tux over 2 years ago (I know my avatar shows me in one...but that's an old pix). We believe we are "entertainers" and, therefore, choose to dress as the entertainment. Presently our dress is black slacks, dark blue shirt and gold tie. With most of our jobs, there is normally 2-5 of us so the outfit looks cool.

Set-up is company polo and slacks.

We have done a couple of hundred jobs since then and never had a compaint.

I think you have to dress as you feel you need to........after discussing with the client. When I do Wedding anniversary parties or any party that sets up where the guests are either Black tie or Black tie optional I wear my tux. Even when the dress is business casual attire I will at least wear a suit. By dressing up people don't treat you like the "hired help".......

In my humble opinion........

My vote is still no, and I have now switced to nice black dress slacks, white button down dress shirt with our logo stitched on it and a tie, which I lose after all the "formalities" are over with....and of course the sleeves get rolled up, because I mean business...:sqeek::sqcool:

Tux still has it's place for the more formal clients, but we don't market to them.

I did a wedding as a favor for a friend recently. It gave me a chance to test out using my new laptop and the PCDJ software. I walked in and people were in shorts and flip flops or blue jeans etc. -very casual. I had on black dress pants and a white button down long sleeved shirt with no tie, not exactly what I consider to be very dressed up, more like upscale casual. People looked at me and made comments like "he must be the brains of the operation" etc. I was one of the best dressed people there. You get respect and people assume that you know what you're doing if you look sharp. I have a tuxedo and plan to wear it as much as possible depending on the event.

It almost is for me, because after deciding I hate weddings, I stopped doing them. There's not much call for them at Corporate events (my specialty), but I still keep 2 around. Every once in a while you run into a very formal Bar/Bas/Bat Mitzvah, or New Years party, or even Anniversary ( usually gold or silver) party, or even a corporate installation..

In 30+ years of DJ'ing, I never once wore a tux. In fact, the only time I wore one, was my wedding, and it was white, to show off my tan :)

The last 10 years or so, I simple wore "my outfit", which identified me. Very casual, laid back island type stuff -- certainly no tie, and sneakers (always white).

Like Johnny mentioned earlier, I am an entertainer, not a waiter :)

I remember being at a big corp. Christmas party once, and asked this guy in a tux if he could take away my plate, and get me a beer -- turns out, he was the DJ -- I got a chuckle out of it, but apparently he didn't :sqlaugh:

I tried wearing a tux years ago. I said to myself, self, what the hell am I doing? That was the end of that. No one ever asks me to wear one either. I've had a few ask the question but only because it was on one of those dumb @ss "10 things to ask a DJ" cheat sheets.

I wear my tux for virtually all of my gigs which are weddings.

When I met a B&G for their May 3rd wedding reception a couple of months ago, they said that a suit would be fine instead of a tux.

Yesterday I had my final planning meeting with the B&G. They told me that the bride's mom saw the picture of me in my tux on my website and decided that she liked how I look in my tux, so the suit is out. I'll wear my tux.

Sorry, people, but the tux is in style here in Atlanta! And I really don't care either way...I'm so used to wearing my tux, it doesn't bother me except when my tux shirt has too much starch in it and I can't get the damn tuxedo studs to button in!

My tux makes me stand out, which is fine with me since I am the Master of Ceremonies. I get a lot of compliments on the way I look in one.

I, too, like Bryan, wear a tux. On our planning information, it clearly gives them a choice and most people pick tux. But I hardly think anyone would complain if I wore a nice dark suit.

just like a suit, you can wear a silly cheesy looking tux, or a stylish formal tux.
the only reason someone would say NO NO NO to a tux is if no one else is dressing up at all...or they've been a a wedding where the dj is wearing a powder blue tux with the big ruffled shirt.

I do find myself wearing fewer bow ties with my tux.

I sincerly don't believe formal wear will ever go out of style....but don't be wearing the same tux in 2028 that you are wearing today.

No tux for me. I wear a nice pair of gray dress slacks with a slight blue pinstripe, a white button-down shirt, and a tie.

I will wear my jacket when I meet the wedding party to line them up but once the festivities get started, the jacket comes off.

I will usually try to find out what the colors are for the wedding, and try to find a tie that will go well with their colors.

Use your salesmanship to get the answer you want. If you want to wear a suit instead of a Tux you say something like this to the client. "You won't mind if I wear a suit would you?" or "Its OK if I wear a suit, right?".
What if you ask them what should you wear and they come back with "All the men are wearing Sky Blue Tuxes" :sqembarrassed: who you gonna call? LOL Ghostbusters!
