My Custom Sub Insanity

After a long time of not being able to find the right sub, I took upon the idea of having something custom put together. Today we has ran our first test and comparison. Let me say it was completely insane. The 150+db I have been hoping to achive is becoming a reality.

The boxes are being designed and built by Cazillia Audio of Swissvale, PA. They build custom car audio speaker boxes.

A little Speaker info: http://www.ozaudio.com/docs/P15_1.pdf

Quad 1 Ohm Voice Coils
Free Air Resonance 33.00Hz
Sensitivity 89.23 dB
4000 Watts RMS
8000 Peak Power

For the 1st test we power the cabnet via a Crown xs1200 in bridge mono sending 3000watts to the cabnet at 4ohms running the voice coils I believe in series to make the 4 - 1 ohm coils a 4 ohm load.

I plan to power the cabnet with a plx3602 when everything is finished. I also hope to use two cabnets for large dances.

We are looking for the best covering solution. Normally they match carpet to people car interior. We are currently investigating rhino liner as an option.

We do not have a db meter that works over 126db

The levels were tested today against a single Mackie SWA1501.

No comparison. The custom sub was at least 10 times louder. The Mackie toped at 117db at 1 meter the custom went overload.

We also tested against 2 Turbosound TXD-118's set next to each other. The Tubos overloaded the db meter. Again the single custom 15" was much louder.

We will be testing more ideas and perfecting the box over the next month or so. I will keep everyone updated.

Cam,

At 89 dB sensitivity 4000 watts will produce about 125 dB spl. The peak rating of 8000 watts would produce less than 128 dB.

Is this a Cam Audio speaker??? I've heard so much about those, way better than RCF ;)

Yeah, I would try using a RCF, B&C, Eminence or other brand driver with a higher sensitivity. You would then be able to reach max output with far less wattage driving it.

The problem I have found with other drivers they are not made to take someone beating the crap out of them.

In the 1st test the sub vibated the place inside and out. The gutters were vibrating outside.

That may be the spl math but I will tell you. 1 - 15" will dust both of my Turbosound 18's hands down.

I can't wait until out spl meter comes in it will show you the insane levels of bass we are producing.
