How Do You Pronounce "Karaoke?"HiDefDJ 02-19-2007, 01:14 PM I hear people saying this word 2 different ways. I've seen it spelled about a hundred different ways. lol DJ Dan 02-19-2007, 01:34 PM I've always pronounced it carry-okie Travis B 02-19-2007, 01:43 PM I've always done care-rah okie (but I'm wrong) Here's the dictionary reference to it: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/karaoke JoeChartreuse 02-19-2007, 07:55 PM I've always done care-rah okie (but I'm wrong) Here's the dictionary reference to it: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/karaoke The above is fairly close. My Sensei is from Okinawa, and a karaoke addict. He pronounces it Kah - the-n an R that sounds more like a very soft D- ah- okay. Accent on the O , but a slightly less defined accent on the "kay" Kah-dah-o-kay Fred Stewart 02-20-2007, 12:27 AM Sorry for the impolitic post... jfactor1 02-20-2007, 01:09 AM I found this years ago, but it seems strangely appropriate for this thread... http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f304/jfactor1/starposter.jpg Mikey V 02-20-2007, 11:45 AM Well in the Immortal words of Comedian Jerry Lewis, "Hey Flavin with a Microphone!!!! Kaaaarrrreeeunderwood!!! Or just plain Karaoke!!! MV:sqbiggrin: DougF 02-20-2007, 12:17 PM I always heard the REAL correct pronunciation was : kar ruh OH key (to spell it phonically with "key" pronounce someplace between key and kay) :sqconfused: Cap Capello 02-20-2007, 06:08 PM The proper Japanese pronounciation (and double checked to be certain) is: kahra o kay kahra is spoken almost apologetically, the long o is very curt and down an octave, the final emphasis is very strong on the kay. Kinda spoken like a smilie face mixer eq setting. JoeChartreuse 02-20-2007, 06:30 PM The proper Japanese pronounciation (and double checked to be certain) is: kahra o kay kahra is spoken almost apologetically, the long o is very curt and down an octave, the final emphasis is very strong on the kay. Kinda spoken like a smilie face mixer eq setting. Thought I said that........but not as well Cap Capello 02-20-2007, 07:48 PM Joe : Sorry. Jim Casey 02-21-2007, 10:11 AM I pronounce it "Krap - e - okee" LOL DougF 02-21-2007, 10:40 AM I knew I was in the ball park! Steve Miller 02-21-2007, 11:18 AM Jim, I have a hard time calling anything that turns me $900 to $1500 a week, every week, crap! Carolyn 02-25-2007, 12:31 AM I pronounce it "Krap - e - okee" LOL Please do not refer to how some of us make a living as crap, Thank you. Chuck The DJ 02-25-2007, 01:06 AM I've had to re-learn the word since I moved to Maui,,, Caps way is correct.... I have to think when I say it now.... I'll get there Jim Casey 02-28-2007, 09:49 AM I pronounce it "Krap - e - okee" LOL Still like my pronounciation... Carolyn 02-28-2007, 10:33 AM Wonderful, then keep it to yourself. Mikey V 02-28-2007, 11:59 AM The names we use, and the things we all say affect all of us in this Industry. I wonder if your name was made fun of on line, would you like it? Hmmm... Your opinion is ok, freedom of speech and all, but what if the tables were turned, and your name was being made fun of, would you like it? I dont think so. :sqcool: Jim Casey 02-28-2007, 09:29 PM Please...I have been made fun of more than you know... You guys and gals REALLY need to get some thick skin. When I listen to the same people belt out the same crappy songs and sing them crappy, it gives me the right to call it Krap-i-oke. HiDefDJ 02-28-2007, 09:39 PM Let's try to keep the thread on topic guys and not offend each other. Many of us earn a living with karaoke and take it seriously. There's really no need to keep repeating yourself Jim. Everyone gets your point by now.http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t101/Ctb29resonate/Smiley/SmBeatingdeadHorse.gif Fred Stewart 03-01-2007, 03:13 AM Please...I have been made fun of more than you know... Ah... I sure remember that, Jim. How do ya spell Teddy Rock? :D A fellow bbs admin can understand the difference between contributing and stirring. I'm walking in your old shoes now. Please, don't tick these folks off... I gotta answer to 'em. You know how that is. ;) eklondon 03-01-2007, 03:15 AM How about Scare & Choke Me? Steve Miller 03-01-2007, 05:00 AM Please...I have been made fun of more than you know... You guys and gals REALLY need to get some thick skin. When I listen to the same people belt out the same crappy songs and sing them crappy, it gives me the right to call it Krap-i-oke. Jim, You know this is nothing against you but most times you get out of it what you put into it. Properly run sound and a properly run show will attract a lot more good singers than bad ones. Would you say Chris Daughtry is a bad singer? Jimmy Fortune? Dave Mathews? What do you do when Kenny Chesney walks into your Karaoke show? Do you tell these people welcome to Crap a oke? I don't! Chris was a regular at my show for several years before AI fame, I often get singer from local bands who come into my shows and from time to time national level people when they are in town. You really would be suprised at what Karaoke can bring you. Mr. K 03-01-2007, 11:20 AM I voted for: Carry O Key. SoftJock Rick 03-01-2007, 11:36 AM I opted for option #1. I think it should be renamed though: Stay-away-unless-you-can carry-a-key I've seen some incredible singers, and some incredibly bad singers (I would fall into the latter group) :sqlaugh: I've been thrown out of my local favorite bar (on more than one occasion), for attempting to sing, then knocking over all the equipment doing my Elvis routine. They don't let me in on Karaoke nights anymore, unless I promise not to drink shots :sqwink: JoeChartreuse 03-08-2007, 06:02 PM Please...I have been made fun of more than you know... You guys and gals REALLY need to get some thick skin. When I listen to the same people belt out the same crappy songs and sing them crappy, it gives me the right to call it Krap-i-oke. Jim, I've got a skin like a rhino. But if you notice posting something produces negative feeling from others for no reason ( no debate going on, no points being made) then why do it? You most certainly have the right, but why do you have the need? JoeChartreuse 03-08-2007, 06:05 PM Jim, I left the last post up because I stand behind the gist of it, but I just realized your post was put up prior to our discussion on another thread where I believe we may have hashed this out already. Sorry jclaydon 01-24-2008, 12:30 PM Well most of the time I say "carrie o key" But from its origins from japan its "carra okay" and means "empty orchestra" hence the name of my company "Empty Orchestra entertainment". Kara -empty Oke - orchestra take care -James toqer 01-24-2008, 03:40 PM If I don't pronounce it correct I get whipped. Car Rah Oh Kay jclaydon 01-24-2008, 06:56 PM Well there you have it.. I was very close.. but Toq would know since he works in a Japanese community.. *lol* | |
