Do You Dance With The Crowd?Chuck The DJ 04-02-2007, 11:08 PM Do you go out and dance, not lead a dance or the Electric Slide or anything, but you just like a song and go out and dance in the crowd? Mr. K 04-02-2007, 11:14 PM Actually, I'm just senile. I can recall, now, four times when I have been asked to dance. Only once did I refuse because I actually knew the lady from when I worked in a restaurant and I did not want to dance with her because I was in love with her and her husband was there and I would have felt really funny. Chuck The DJ 04-02-2007, 11:18 PM Actually, I'm just senile. ...I was in love with her and her husband was there and I would have felt really funny. only if it was a slow song :sqwink:  Mr. K 04-02-2007, 11:22 PM only if it was a slow song :sqwink:  Oh, that was when I danced with my best friend's mom! :love3: Kirby Ball 04-02-2007, 11:25 PM I've never gone out and danced at a reception, but at some of the private parties that are having way too much fun, I've been known to run out on the floor for a few moments and do what ever us white boys do that we call dancing before I dash back behind the safety of the equipment.. :p Jon Tuck 04-02-2007, 11:39 PM I will on occasion and its usually with Grandma call me strange but I enjoy getting my older folks up dancing its actually led to heartwarming conversation. MADNESS 04-02-2007, 11:43 PM I will depending on the party and sometimes if asked. I think it can be a good thing. Bryan Durio 04-03-2007, 07:52 AM I'm with Kirby on this one. DJ Gray 04-03-2007, 09:52 AM When it's appropriate I will check with client prior to gig and find out if it's alright. I try and use it to get things going if the floor slows down. barry stamper 04-04-2007, 09:09 AM I will on occasion and its usually with Grandma call me strange but I enjoy getting my older folks up dancing its actually led to heartwarming conversation. Actually I can recall many times being asked to dance, and often its when there is group dancing going on. But, I don't often just go out on my own and dance. DJ PAUL 04-21-2007, 10:55 PM I'm waaay to busy dance'n up a storm behind my gear to go out on the floor. Paul patrickrlewis 04-23-2007, 02:02 AM Let me tell you right now, if I ever danced, it would be the abolutely last show I ever did, because everyone in the room would die from laughter. cbarronx23 04-23-2007, 02:20 AM Let me tell you right now, if I ever danced, it would be the abolutely last show I ever did, because everyone in the room would die from laughter. Elaine Benes? patrickrlewis 04-23-2007, 04:25 AM Elaine Benes? Exactly!!! DJ Gray 04-23-2007, 03:17 PM Some of you know I love to dance, and God blessed me with rhythm. Well sometimes behind the rig, I can find myself be-bop'ing to the music, every now and then.................well Saturday night, and I can't remeber the song, 3 ladies, maybe early 20's, wanted me to come out and dance with them. Did I say All three were very attractive, and more importantly.... :dwink: ugh, yes, dear...Ok , "very good dancers"....Well I said No..... :dsad: ( The Client said He had no problem with My dancing) I know that was the right thing to do, Oh did I mention my Wife attended this function with some friends of ours.... :sqfrown: precisedjs 12-18-2007, 06:34 PM if a lady comes up and dances with you, are you REALLY gonna say no? I understand you need to stay professional but you cant just brush her off.. Papa Deuce 12-18-2007, 06:40 PM if a lady comes up and dances with you, are you REALLY gonna say no? I understand you need to stay professional but you cant just brush her off.. I'm married, and if I and my wife don't know the lady, I am going to say no.... DJ Gray 12-18-2007, 06:50 PM As I said before...I will only if needed to get party going. And it's with my wife. There have been times when I have been asked by friends of mine to dance, when I'm doing a friends party, and my wife is dancing I will dance. My wife and I have been dancing together for 45 years, and actually met dancing so it's natural for us to do this, and it usually perks up the party. Precisionpower 12-18-2007, 07:52 PM I had a chick hanging on me all night at a bar that i was spinning at. She asked me if i thought she was pretty, did i like her rack, (She flopped one out) and if i would dance with her. I tried to be professional, and decline.......She got frustrated, and asked me... "Do You Like Girls"??? I couldn't believe my ears!!! After this, i told her a few choice things.....Name & # I now have a friend. DJ Sue 12-19-2007, 12:52 AM I always dance with the crowd!! We have a great time! DJ Gray 12-19-2007, 01:56 AM I always dance with the crowd!! We have a great time! Now if I am out and about at a club it's a different story. I do a DOWD. " Dance Only When Drunk" barry stamper 12-20-2007, 03:14 PM I dance behind my booth I can't help it I love music and I feel it all through my soul..... jkcomputers 12-23-2007, 09:25 PM Define going out to dance... LOL... Does being at a bar, having 3 chicks grinding up against you, grabbing your ass, one closing the lid on the laptop and then them pulling you out to the dance floor count???? (I was out there for a while, thank god for play mode traktor)... Ususally I end up dancing in the both to pass the night.... But hey thats me... Or the Encore.... Fred Stewart 12-23-2007, 10:16 PM Well... Wolfie ain't into the bump 'n' grind stuff but I do enjoy a good slow dance turn or waltz with the ladies. A show just ain't a show without a few dance turns with the ladies. Back in the day when I was doing a lot of fraternal house dances, there were women who had no dates. Asking these ladies for a dance meant a lot to them. Meant the world to me, too. A slow dance turn with the client on NYE was standard practice. I knew the slow dance songs she liked. ;) Shirl and I always make a point of doing a buckle polisher dance or two during the shows. :) jokerswild 12-23-2007, 10:20 PM Define going out to dance... That's why if you act quickly you too can learn how to dance like a white boy. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3689560270595414198 DJembedrummer 03-02-2008, 01:35 AM Hey why not? I'd rather have the crowd saying "that DJ was nuts" instead of "that DJ sucked". Depends on how you dance though! Proformance 03-03-2008, 11:40 PM I don't allow myself to get singled out to dance with patrons or guests - but I'll go out to do a follow along or teach a line dance if it's needed. The topic has me wondering though: what does an "interactive" DJ do if he works at a strip club? DJembedrummer 03-04-2008, 07:44 PM The topic has me wondering though: what does an "interactive" DJ do if he works at a strip club? Hmmmm.... Good question. Carolyn 03-06-2008, 01:14 AM The topic has me wondering though: what does an "interactive" DJ do if he works at a strip club? Goes on a diet, so he doesn't embarrass himself on the dance pole. redhotdj 03-28-2008, 03:40 PM I usually don't go out on the dance floor i stay behind my equipment and dance with my wife Ron Auger 03-28-2008, 04:26 PM Peter, is that you? Alan Dodson 08-15-2008, 09:15 PM Depends...sometimes with the MOB or MOG if unattended. Ron Auger 08-15-2008, 11:53 PM Around here most of my brides like the cheese dances. If I'm going to do them then we are going to do them my way. I will start off and lead each dance. I want people going off in time and staying in time. Besides, most people need a little coaxing to the dance floor. I'm now teaching everyone the Cupid Shuffle. Not many around here have seen it. It's new and refreshing for wedding line dances. Even the brides who don't want the typical love the Cupid Shuffle. I'll also dance behind my stand. If I've got good music on then I'm reacting to is. Bam, on comes some KC. Oh no I'm getting Happy Feet, woh!:sqlaugh: That's why people love me. It certainly ain't my good looks and sexy body.:sqeek: Kirby Ball 08-16-2008, 11:21 PM Here's a picture of a fat white boy dancing at a holiday party. :D I'm sure glad that Hank did my Trading Card before I posted this!:sqlaugh: Kirby Ball 08-17-2008, 05:42 PM Yes, it was the last dance of the evening and yes (gasp) I had 1 Corona to celebrate a successful party. :) groovielou 08-17-2008, 06:22 PM YES... There are a couple of dances I lead, Conga Line and the bridal party "We are family" dance. G-Lou Cesar 08-19-2008, 11:58 PM Disclaimer........................................ .................................................. ..... I'm not talking about leading a Dance. I'm talking about dancing for ones personal enjoyment. .................................................. .................................................. ......... Now for a DJ to dance at a event he is paid to perform at is very unprofessional. You are not at your post to deal with Requests or Vendors you are assigned to work with. Dancing with a unknown person opens yourself up to the myriad of potential trouble scenarios that might materialize when dealing with the Public especially if alcohol is involved. Dancing takes your mind off of your primary responsibility thus depriving the client of your best performance. Kirby Ball 08-20-2008, 12:16 AM Disclaimer........................................ .................................................. ..... I'm not talking about leading a Dance. I'm talking about dancing for ones personal enjoyment. .................................................. .................................................. ......... Now for a DJ to dance at a event he is paid to perform at is very unprofessional. Merely a subjective opinion on your part. You are not at your post to deal with Requests or Vendors you are assigned to work with. In my case, it was the Last Song. No more requests were to be taken. Dancing with a unknown person opens yourself up to the myriad of potential trouble scenarios that might materialize when dealing with the Public especially if alcohol is involved. Not an unknown person, in fact was dancing with family and friends. What sort of problems? Give a "for instance." I've bartended for many years and I doubt that there's not too many situations that I haven't encountered where alcohol is involved. In my situation the last call had been given and no more alcohol was to be served. In fact the bartender was on the floor dancing also. Dancing takes your mind off of your primary responsibility thus depriving the client of your best performance. Again, we were on the last dance and I don't see how that deprives anyone of my best performance. In fact, in this situation the crowd loved it. Everyone's situation and or style is different and blanket statements can't cover every scenario. Cesar 08-20-2008, 12:22 AM Blanket statements are for the majority of the scenarios. Kirby Ball 08-20-2008, 12:25 AM Blanket statements can't cover all scenarios. Cesar, people are different. DJs are different. If all DJs were the same it would be a pretty boring industry wouldn't it? Cesar 08-20-2008, 12:32 AM But being Professional doesn't come with a gray area either you are or you aren't. I'm not trying to push your buttons Kirby it really is the way I feel and I don't dance at events I am performing at. I take it this was a event for your family and friends that let you let your hair down a little and have a drink. Kirby Ball 08-20-2008, 12:38 AM Ahh, but see that's where I tend disagree. There are different levels of all professions, including DJs. I can respect your viewpoint, but do you truly respect other's viewpoints? Event was a Holiday party, former place of employment, lot's of friends and some family. We've been doing their event for 3 years now. And yes I had one beer that took me over 1/2 hour to drink. Tore down my equipment and my wife drove. Do I drink at a wedding? No. Just some food for thought from an old man. Peace Cesar 08-20-2008, 12:56 AM Can't respect others view points when they don't see the danger in their actions. I learned a long time ago that there are no friends when it comes to DJing. If you want to put it to the test pick out your best friend and tell them you will DJ their next party for free and then back out the night before. If you have been DJing this event for three years and you enjoy doing it why would you put yourself in the situation that you might have a disagreeable conversation with someone at the end of the night and they would be able to say the DJ was drinking I smelled it on his breath. I use my own experiences to compare what someone is saying against what I have seen in the Real World. Just one old man sharing a view with another old man. Peace. Chuck The DJ 08-20-2008, 01:25 AM Calm down you two, this is my thread so I say so!!!! Cesar makes a very good point, but so does Kirby... The main problem I see here is that Cesar, you have to understand that the way that YOU feel and the way that you run your business may work for you. You have the experience to back up your feelings about how you choose to run your business..... BUT.... you have to understand that YOURS is not the only way to run a business and that not everyone will agree with how you run it. They want to run their business their way based on their experiences. Sometimes you do come across like "my way or the highway" and brah, that just ain't right. You can feel that for you, your way is right. You can point out that if you were doing it, you might not do so and so..... BUT You HAVE to respect that there are other ways of doing the same business that you are in and you HAVE to be able to say, "okay dude, that's not how I would do it, but if it works for you, that's cool".... Okay, you don't HAVE to do anything, but you could try and be a little more open to how someone does things that differ from you. You might not wear flip flops loading in, ;) that doesn't make it wrong.... Where you might see a danger in something, someone else might see an opportunity. I know I have shared this story before so I'll shorten it.....blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah..... Randy said to me, "why would you want to do that knowing that you might offend someone in the crowd?"... I said "because if someone in the crowd is going to be offended by that, I don't want to do their party" We all have different ideas of what is right, that doesn't make them wrong... Jeff Romard 08-20-2008, 04:57 AM But being Professional doesn't come with a gray area either you are or you aren't. In this business being professional comes with alot of gray areas..... Some would say that if you don't maintain a website you are unprofessional..I disagree I have many friends in this business who don't including a guy that has been at it over 40 years he's doing ok. Some would say if you don't stand all night you are unprofessional...Again I disagree. Sitting/standing does nothing to help your level of professionalisim Eating/drinking at a function is unprofessional? If you are invited to do so why would it be unprofessional? It's a simple fact of life you have to hydrate regardless of profession. I enjoy a few Diet Pepsis every time I play. I don't consume alcohol at a function but it's more for marketing reasons than the fact I actually feel it diminishes my abilities. I used to and to tell you the truth some of the best functions I have played I don't remember. I don't suggest this to anyone or feel it is for everybody but a beer at the end of the night among friends what the hell You are willing to pray at a function because the guy is a christian what would you be willing to do if he was an alcoholic? I have had my gear spread all over the table and it still didn't stop a couple of hundred people from singing the lyrics I had the time of my life at 1 AM. I play weddings with dress pants and my company shirt on I hang a nice big sign with my company name on it and although I am not as graceful as Kirby I have danced the last song of the evening many times I'll let my clients determine whats professional not the unknown comic/DJ Kirby Ball 08-20-2008, 08:36 AM I'm calm... :) I'll come back to this tonight after work. But while I'm away I'll leave everyone a snippet of some lyrics of a song that Dave Mason recorded many moons ago. There ain't no good guys, there ain't no bad guys. There's only you and me and we just disagree. Peace Cesar 08-20-2008, 10:45 AM Jeff you should be more worried about what the unknown prospective client thinks then the client. You already have the clients money your trying to get the prospective clients money. Thoughts? Jeff Romard 08-20-2008, 11:56 AM Jeff you should be more worried about what the unknown prospective client thinks then the client. You already have the clients money your trying to get the prospective clients money. Thoughts? I am over an 85% referral rate Cesar I guess they don't mind Cesar 08-20-2008, 12:00 PM Remember what Randy said Improve by 1 percent. Whats a matter with a 86 percent referral? DJMC 08-21-2008, 07:28 PM I come to bury Cesar not to praise him! (oops wrong thread....) Can I agree with him? Not the way he was badgering in this thread, but the fact that I Do Not Dance..... not that its unprofessional. When daughter Allie was co-emcee at weddings, she used to dance with the crowd. I guess when you're easy on the eyes, the rules bend. I stay behind the podium, while the "Interactive Assistant" takes care of the dancing. Cesar, some of the most successful DJs in my market teach the Electric Slide, the Cha-Cha Slide, & other line dances at weddings. Is that unprofessional? Whatever makes the customers happy. I know that MY CURRENT CUSTOMERS (the ones who are hiring non-cheese), do not want to see a dancing DJ-MC! That wouldn't be pretty. Kirby Ball 08-21-2008, 10:22 PM How about we respect Chuck's thread and move the conversation elsewhere? http://www.ourdjtalk.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=64 Ballphoto 08-21-2008, 10:34 PM What's with all these guys dancing with their wives?
