Handhelds?
Meaning do you think my Shure rcvr, could handle a handheld that I could switch in / out? Do they make such a matching mic?

Check the specs with shure for the unit you have.
Make sure (no pun) you get the same frequencies for the unit. I have an audio technica unit with handheld, lav, and headset. All will work with the same rcvr.
Just remember, you can't use more than one mike at the same time. Bad situation... feedback, noise, cancelling can occur.

Papa - you may find that the cost of the unit (mic) is almost as much as buying the whole package.....

I have an A/T Freeway 600 lav - I wanted to get a head (for back up)...Price of the head and receiver was around 299; the head alone was in the area of $200...so I bought a used Carvin wireless off ebay for $60.........

Papa -
Like Dan said - I also have a Shure Rcvr. that I can use either a handheld or a lavalier. Both transmitters are the same frequency, but you can't use them in tandem. If you do, one winds up cancelling the other out. As a matter of fact, I am using both for an event this coming weekend. I am going to put the lav on the minister for the ceremony, and then use the handheld for the toasts later on in the reception - same receiver, different mics. All I have to do is turn the lav transmitter/body pack off after the ceremony.
If on the other hand you are searching for a dual channel system that supports both a handheld and lav units, Ben has the Shure dual system in stock for $549.00

There are several other manufacturers that make similar systems. AKG makes a handheld/headset dual system that you can find thru other dealers for around $400.00
