I politely explained that I didn't think that our company is n geared for doing "large-events" like a prom and said that I hated to turn business away, but that I wouldn't book a job, unless I felt that I could do it right.
I gave the young lady the names of two other DJ services in this area that were more suited for what she was looking for.

Who needs an excuse? :sqeek::sqlaugh::sqwink:
We don't do "videos" and have no intention of adding that to our offerings.
Proms are not figured into our business plan. We might do smaller dances at a school, but not da prom...
I just figured that there were more qualified DJs in my area that can do a superior job for this type of event.

Very professional of you to politely turn it down and steer them toward others who cater to this type of event.

Thanks John! :)
Plus I don't think I could stand listening to all the Hip-hop that I would have to play at one of these gatherings... :sqeek:

I have already started the initial planning for getting prom flyers in the mail.
I am gearing towards rural communities and smaller high schools... Unless a client asks me to perform at such bigger schools... By which I would either rent or buy... Depending on the costs involved.

I've recently added a substantial amount of gear to try and tackle the prom market in my area (trussing, lighting, two video screens...) but you know you have truly arrived as a professional DJ when you can turn down business for the right reasons. Early in my DJ career I was so eager to book every call I got I would do whatever it took to book the gig. Now I realize that there is so much more involved in working an event. Being able to pick and choose the right events doesn't make you a snob DJ, it makes you a true professional, and what seperated the "bottom feeders" from the pro's.

I have done some recent research. I have a friend that does many school dances for an agency. So we got to talking.
It appears most proms in my area are 200 or less students. The average dj rate is $500 to $600. I have been pushing packages starting at $1500. I wonder why I have not gotten any calls.
For the amount of work and the product I want to sell I guess I'm staying out of this market. I need to find a use for dual 18"s though they are collecting dust. As with much of my gear.

Nice Job Kirby.... I feel that proms and weddings are those events that are a "once in a lifetime deal"

Thanks, you all have reaffirmed that I definitely made the right call on this!
