Kirby Ball 08-18-2007, 03:45 AM You'll love this one, we're doing pics and music (tomorrow) for a couple that were once an item when they were teenagers but went their separate ways and married. Both of their spouses died and they have found each other again...awwww ain't that sweet?
Well the good part (that you can appreciate) is that we're doing their reception and it's going to be in a VFW hall!
We went down there tonight and set up, so I'll be ready to roll tomorrow...!
Fred Stewart 08-18-2007, 06:14 AM Awwww.... that's sweet indeed, Brother Kirby. Enjoy the show and have a good time. :)
Gosh, if I could only recall all the receptions I've done at the old VFW hall back home. Some even had their ceremonies there. They're a lot of fun and often semi formal. Best part was, you don't need wall-shaking sound.
They can get rather funny, too. One VFW wedding I did was for the commander's daughter. She was his youngest. This gal was a real sweetheart. Until a couple of her coworkers got tipsy and started flirting with her father, that was.
Dad was single and loving every moment, of course... them young gals rubbin' all over him on the dance floor. But his little girl didn't think that was appropriate behavior at her wedding. So she grabbed those gals, ushered 'em out the door and slammed it shut. Just threw 'em out the door.
Then there was the bride in the red miniskirt... :D
Ah, the stories I could tell. I miss those days. :)
Jeff Romard 08-18-2007, 08:47 AM We don't have VFWs here in Canada but I can tell you some of the best weddings I've done have been at fire halls, legions and community centers. Theres nothing like the laid back wedding
Go get em Kirby
djxpress 08-18-2007, 12:44 PM You go Kirby! It sure is fun doing a good old "beer can" reception sometimes. What a great atmosphere; relaxed, casual, and fun. Have a blast and post some pics...thx
Chuck The DJ 08-18-2007, 09:04 PM OK,,, my wife and I dated in High School,,, broke up, went our separate ways for 17 years... I DJ'd her 15 year class reunion, we were both divorced at the time, talked and have been together ever since... We just had out 16th anny in July.....
SoftJock Rick 08-18-2007, 09:41 PM So, you met back up in the VFW...? :sqlaugh:
Hey Chuck, almost thought I saw a hair on that globe -- you slackin'?
:sqwink:
Chuck The DJ 08-18-2007, 11:10 PM that must have been a piece of lint on the camera... LOL
Kirby Ball 08-19-2007, 05:16 AM Absolute blast and we only had to play one "Thumpa-Thumpa" song (SexyBack) which was some kind of "in-the-family", "inside" joke.
I don't think we ever got so many compliments after a show as this one. It was a breeze to program the music, as it was families and a lot of people closer to my age! :)
Joann and Larry (the B&G), were probably one of the nicest couples we've ever had the pleasure of working for.
VFW hall was a lot bigger than I expected. Left the SP2s at home and just went with my EV's and the Peavey TLS speakers, which was more than enough as I didn't have to turn the music up to "stun"!
B&G were pleased, the guests were pleased and we had fun! :)
Fred Stewart 08-19-2007, 06:33 AM Well... there you are, my friend. Congrats on a great show.:)
Keep in touch with this lodge. Offer to do their Christmas or NYE party. Don't dicker over price, just get in there for the big show. NYE at the VFW is a night to remember, trust me on this one. :D
Take care of them and they'll take care of you. They'll post your phone number on their bulletin board and recommend your service when the house is booked for a party. Need a DJ? Good. We've got the best. Here's their number. :)
Remember... the VFW parties are frequented by local business owners. You can grab some corporates from the VFW gigs. :)
Kirby Ball 08-19-2007, 06:41 AM Will do, Mr. Fred!
The Groom is the Mayor of this village just south of us.
And you're right, his buddies are all local business owners and we "pressed the flesh" and made some contacts.
We haven't had any bookings from this particular village before and this was our opportunity to show them our "stuff" and I think we did quite well. :)
Fred Stewart 08-19-2007, 07:27 AM Oh yeah. You did fantastic and it gets better.
The VFW folks are a tight-knit group. They do a lot of community service things. Some of the "officer elections" ceremonies may seem kinda kooky... but when you're dressed in a clown suit visiting ill pups at Children's Hospital, it all makes sense. :)
Referrals spread to other organizations. Many of your VFW members are also in with the Moose, FOP, Shriners etc. They're all supporters of the local fire and rescue paramedic services as well. Now we're talkin' rental halls and parties all over. :)
We're not talkin' $700.00 shows here. The fraternal houses can't afford that. More importantly, we're talkin' referrals to the big shows. Upscale weddings and corporate functions will come from referrals.
You might even get a street festival placement out of it. The Orange County Street Fest back home was a staple for a few years before I moved north. It was a non-profit to benefit the county fire and rescue so I wasn't paid. But boy, the referrals were gold.
Even had a sexy gal from the VFW come out to rub... um, elbows. ;) Aw, Baby, come on over here. Talk dirty to me. Sit by my side and let's do some DJin'. Adjust this knob. Naw, not that knob...
One year I loaded out of the street fest and drove to a housing development and did a block party afterwards. They paid in cash. It was a long day but I got paid.
Once you get in with the local fraternal houses, you're set. :)
