Compact Discs were supposed to drop from 16 dollars I think I paidin the beginningonce demand was in full swing to under 10 dollars. Til today they go most places for around an average of14 dollars per copy. That and the lack of quality music the past 15 yrs has caused the mp3 revolution.

Ha! I was paying $18-$30 a disc back in early 1985.

I don't care about mp3 files replacing CDs -- those of us who value sonic quality over portability and ease of transfer won't let the format die. You've got SACD and even DVD-Audio which trump the sound quality of MP3s. Let's not let audio quality be dumbed down for the dumb masses!

I may have missed it... but if memory serves, the CD was originally developed as a computer proggy storage medium. Floppy discs and HDDs were quite small when compared to today's utilities. The first multimedia PCs benefitted from CDROMs. I believe Sony came up with the music CD idea later.

As to the prediction that MP3s will replace CDs, I hope it's wrong. An MP3 is to the CD what a boombox is to a McIntosh amp. The MP3 cannot faithfully reproduce all the music that the CD can. But if one is listening through a cheap, Chinee-made set of earbuds while jogging, it wouldn't make much difference anyhow.

It makes a difference to me. Doing away with the audio CD would be a grave mistake in this old dog's opinion.

wait a minute thats what some old dogs such as I said about the CD while comparing Vinyl. somehow we have made it. Though we could always just use wav files or Flac files which are claimed lossless with the advent of terabyte HDD we can easily copy the vinyl bypassing and in fact having a better Tonal quality from a file. Rip it to MP3 at the 320 range and still be a more quality sound than Compact Disc.
