You... as a DJ then... vs. You as a DJ now...

Think back to when you started versus how you are now.... how have YOU improved? Not your equipment... but YOU?

The focus is no longer on me "acting" like the entertainment, with stupid schtik and silly banter. You and I started around the same time, with the same company...looking back, I can't believe some of the stunts I used to pull at weddings.

ohhhhh sorry....

I'm not gonna site the obvious stuff, but as I got more used to being up on stage (but I still get butterflys) my self image projected better, my personality comes across more to the audience... If you look comfortable on stage, they will see that and in turn, make them feel better, connected like a friend as opposed to just some guy or girl up there.

Uh... they kind of made us do it, if you recall. The guy in charge of my office was fanatical about that stuff.... It was the part I hated most... except for those crappy lights they made us use... how embarrassing.

Oh god...remember those lights! Frigging clamp-on flood lights from Rickle's with different colored floods all plugged into this homemade wooden controller box that consisted of a row of standard wall outlets and a row of standard wall light switchs. Ah, good times...good times. I may actually have pictures somewhere...

we used the row of colored deck bulbs with a breaker socket booster which caused the lights to flash on and off (Green, Red, Blue and Yellow).

I knew when I turned 12 years old what I wanted to do with my life - be a Disc Jockey - most notably on the radio. When I started out doing the mobile thing back in High School (God, has it really been 30 years?) I did it for the love of the music. I didn't receive money for it - and most of the stuff I was doing back then was high school dances and pool parties.

How have I progressed since then?

I took a page out of my Dad's PR book - to treat each and every potential and confirmed client like they were the only person on the face of the planet and make them feel as though every word they spoke would be their last.

I taught myself how to beatmix. -

I learned the nuances of wedding formats/music

I learned the Professional way of performing Wedding Receptions

I learned the importance of networking with other professionals like my brethren here

I've gone thru the ups and downs of what kinds of advertising works and doesnt work

I continue to try and learn as much about differnet techniques used across this country in the Mobile DJ world as possible.

I'm sure I've left out a ton of things that make me the Pro I am today.

Much more Comfy on the mic. As a kid I stuttered. Lotta speech therapy. I started out terrified.

Much better at sound setup

WAY BUNCHES BIG TIME more knowledge of music.

People skills the same- always my saving grace.

Then, I thought that I was cool because I was a DJ.

Now I know better.

I opened up a lot more to different styles of music. Back when I first started it was hip hop, house and reggae music. Now I play everything. Back then I was more of a scratch DJ, now I beatmix in sets. My mic game has improved a lot from back then.

A lot more organized, but still need improvement.

A lot more confident in my abilities and more willing to take that risk and try something new (for me).

Running a serious business, instead of "DJ'ing for Beer". :)

Willing to listen to the advice of others, take what I can use and discard the rest. In the past, I just ignored anyone's and everyone's advice. So, I guess I've made progress on that front.

Enjoying it a whole lot more now than in the past.

Doing more events and getting paid better.

Just to name a few things.. :p
