What's Happening with Hip HopDougF 08-20-2007, 02:03 PM http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1653639,00.html Jon Tuck 08-20-2007, 03:10 PM Pyrrhic ?????? DJ Cam 08-20-2007, 03:23 PM While I agree with the statement sales are down. The people that listen to rap music don't pay for it. Actually very few people pay for music. There are guys that come in my one bar and sell burnt cd's $1 each. I'm sure this is going on all over the country, plus the fact that if anyone wants music they download it or get it from a friend. The rock bands are doing just fine as they have always made their money touring, but it looks like the rappers need a way to feed their kids. I would say listening is up but sales are down. All people request anymore is rap. Bryan Durio 08-20-2007, 06:10 PM Pyrrhic ?????? Pyrrhic (http://www.answers.com/Pyrrhic) achieved at excessive cost: a Pyrrhic victory [after Pyrrhus, king of Epirus who sustained heavy losses in defeating the Romans] Kirby Ball 08-20-2007, 08:41 PM Good article, Thanks for sharing it. jfactor1 08-20-2007, 08:55 PM You know what can fix the rap industry? More 80 BPM "hits". :puke: djxpress 08-20-2007, 10:19 PM Aw now, ya'll quit trippin! Holla at ya buoy-G! Kirby Ball 08-20-2007, 11:19 PM You know what can fix the rap industry? More 80 BPM "hits". :puke: And make 'em use real drummers... :D patrickrlewis 08-21-2007, 05:17 AM And make 'em use real drummers... :D :sqlaugh::sqlaugh::sqlaugh::sqlaugh: That would actually require some skill and talent, two words no one in the rap/hip-hop industry even know the meaning of. smallworld 08-26-2007, 12:24 AM Come on guys hip hop isnt so bad. I bet you guys get requests for some.DJ Cam,I think most people download music illegally own a computer,Rap,country ,rock etc. From what I understand most Illegal downloading is from your rich college students who can afford to buy but choose not to.There is nothing happening to hip hop,we are just a bunch of old dj's who are set in our ways. Fred Stewart 08-26-2007, 01:00 AM Hip hop ain't the problem. We've all rocked the floors with TLC, 69Boyz, Will Smith and others. Rap is the problem. It seems that every time a halfway decent dance beat is goin', sure enough here comes the rap. And there goes my dance floor. The rap needs to go. Kirby Ball 08-28-2007, 12:36 AM Amen Brother Fred! barry stamper 08-28-2007, 09:24 AM It's too over commercialized, it could implode on itself like disco did:sqfrown: the dogman 08-28-2007, 10:13 AM Hip hop ain't the problem. We've all rocked the floors with TLC, 69Boyz, Will Smith and others. Rap is the problem. It seems that every time a halfway decent dance beat is goin', sure enough here comes the rap. And there goes my dance floor. The rap needs to go. Fred is so right here. People dont dance to the words they dance to the beat. Ive seen my pal djjungle go from a song with words to straight music with a beat and NOT lose the dance floor. The next time you get a chance to watch BET or MTV and watch the hip hop artist. Pay attention to the way they look, the very movements they go through. It is practically all the same. Nothing original. You could actually stop a song and insert a different artist and lose nothing once you started up again. Even the beat in alot of cases doesnt change so where is the uniqueness of the artist. I know every once in awhile something comes down that is different but its getting to be so rare. I love the dance ability of some of it but the lyrics just make it same ole same ole. Yes some people probly do download music...but think about it they have one song that is worth it. The rest are pure garbage. Maybe its time for them to slow down and really work the creative side and put out something that appeals to everyone. Take a song to the club that they think will work and let the dj try it. If the crowd reacts positively ya got something. But thats just me thinking. Brian Martin 08-28-2007, 06:41 PM It just plain SUCKS! smallworld 12-30-2007, 02:32 PM It just plain SUCKS! I also love the oldies, but most guests that only listen to that music are either in bed by 10 pm or cant dance for more than 10 min.Get the picture?:sqcool: barry stamper 12-30-2007, 03:24 PM I hate threads like this. So you don't like rap and think they have no talent why bash? for Dj's some of you guys can be very narrow minded. All music styles have their big moments Country in the Nineties, Heavy metal in the 80s rap and hip hop has had it mainstream popularity as of late. Something else wil come along and Be "Cool" soon, but rap isn't really going away it just may not be as mainstream as it once was. Brian Martin 12-30-2007, 03:55 PM I think your area has more to do with it than age. What will clear the dance floor faster, oldies or rap? Rap, without a doubt. Maybe in a club or in your area this may not be true, but oldies prevail in most places because it is simply good dance music and has broad appeal with people young and old. How many times have you heard, "Don't play any of that rap crap". The old school hip hop was nothing like the trash that's out there today. Tone-Loc, Run DMC, PM Dawn, M.C. Hammer, Bell Biv DeVoe, Coolio, Snow, Kris Kross - this is the stuff that had respectable lyrics and a beat you could dance to. :sqwink: barry stamper 12-30-2007, 04:11 PM I have decided to longer participate in any musical threads from this point on, it simply makes me not want to come back to ourdjtalk. Example is Motown Dead. that one actually had me very mad at some of the absurd comments made. Rap and Hip Hop threads too, I just can't believe as "professionals" we slam the music that we play. My boss taught me 3 simple rules. 1 People don't know what they like they like what they Know! 2 A good song is a good song is a good song. 3. When in doubt play that funky music. Whether it be rap or hip hop or whatever I'll play it without regard to my taste. Fred Stewart 12-30-2007, 05:36 PM Brother Barry, Please... don't let it get under your skin. Most of the comments you'll find on any bbs forum are regional, same as tastes in music genres. My experience is just that. It's not a recommendation by far. What flies around here in DE may not fly where you work. That's how music is. Gosh, I got a serious culture shock when I moved here, lol. :D To be honest, if my audiences liked rap I'd play the heck out of it. If they wanted Barry Manilow I'd play the heck out of it. I don't give a care either way. I'm just sayin'... we don't market to the under 20-something shows. :) Brian Martin 12-30-2007, 09:39 PM Barry don't let this get to ya or take it personal. As Fred said, most of us will play whatever makes us money. Some like rap and some hate it. We have opinions that are deeply rooted and we are never going to change each others mind. Some embrace this music and others like myself are just too set in their ways. it simply makes me not want to come back to ourdjtalk You shouldn't talk like this. You never know when you are being considered for the position of moderator.:sqwink: Papa Deuce 12-30-2007, 09:48 PM ....You shouldn't talk like this. Rappers tour and "perform" live as well. As to making money, as long as I see no name artists and producers who have not been in the business long on "Cribs" showing off 5 Bentleys, and the room they never go in, I will dispute either the lack of earnings argument, or question the origin of their earnings. The Wizard Of OZ 12-31-2007, 01:07 PM From what I see Rap and Hip Hop are the most popular music genres right now and have been for at least the last ten years. I don't know about sales, earnings or number of CDs sold, but I see what young people are listening to and as far as I know they are the largest consumers/listeners of music. My opinions and observations-not necessarily the facts.
