Balanced Line 09-18-2006, 04:57 PM I’ve never seen a thread on one of the "great" debates of our time: Stand or Sit? It has been mentioned in threads along with other “great” topics like Vinyl vs. Digital, Bose pro or con and others.
Other than when you address the audience (talk on mic), do you feel it is important to remain standing all night? If you do, what technology do you use? Vinyl, CD or Computer/Digital? How long are your typical gigs? Do you feel strongly one way or the other or is it a judgement call - do what is appropriate at the time?

I use vinyl.
I use Peavey.
I stand all night, minus an hour or so, during most of the speeches and part of dinner (I have nothing against eating).
My typical gigs are around eight hours. Standing the entire time is important for me, especially because I am spinning vinyl; however, there are some moments when I think it is silly to stand--especially because I am fairly tall.
edit: Oh! And I like to dance.
Travis B 09-18-2006, 09:27 PM No Matter how long the event is, or how tired i try to remain from sitting down if at all possibly. I recently completed a 5 hour gig and only sat down briefly because the rest of the partiers were in a different location, and it was just a few personal friends. (Had my partner at the controls, he was standing however).
I find sitting down makes your job much easier, and clients pay you much more money to go the extra mile. Another thing is nobody can see you if your huddled behind your laptop (which I use). I spin on a computer, and use mackie speakers.
djrox 09-18-2006, 10:27 PM Bounce,
There ain't no "spinnin" on pc.:sqwink:
I stand unless the room is empty.
I spin cdj1ks.
NEVER EAT AT A GIG, unless it's my family or if a host brings me something they have made or are proud of. Then I taste it, politely comment and then have on of teh servers remove the plate from my area.

I think is about the same for most of us Canadian DJs
I Spin Mostly CDs at Weddings (Take out the Vinyl when I know we're gonna kick it up a notch),
I Sit through Dinner/Speeches
(I eat at my Functions, & Drink & ocasionally go out for a Smoke)
Alway sstanding through Dance

You just reminded me of a great idea I once had but didn't like it but now do just because of the way you worded it.

Virtual DJ? I can use my mouse take that ;) actually I have the time coded vinyl spinning on a PC is for me!
DJ Dan 09-19-2006, 03:08 AM I normally work bars; early in the night when everyone is getting wasted I'm sitting in on a stool in the booth. Once people are ready to dance I'm on my feet for the rest of the night.
Fred Stewart 09-19-2006, 06:24 AM Oh yeah... I sure remember that. :D
I got yelled at by a certain DJChat member some years ago about images on our website that showed me sitting in a bar-height director's chair at the street festivals. I had to redirect my time and email him to explain that my back does not permit me to stand for long periods on concrete.
Guess what? The director's chair is still at our shows. It's epecially useful during the bachelor auction when all I have to do is push the Play button on command. The emcee is doing all the work entertaining the crowd and itro-ing the bachelors. I sit back in my chair, push Play at the appropriate time and enjoy the show. :)
When I got started in the biz I sat for the duration. My system at the time (if one is generous enough to call it that) was set up at table level. I sat in a chair to be comfortable.
I don't often sit anymore. The bar-height director's chair keeps me at eye level but I only use it on occasion to take a load off and rest my back when it starts hurting. I use the chair as more of a sit-stand than anything else. I'm standing when I use the mic.
For those who can stand on concrete floors for hours at a time, bless ya. I can't do it anymore.
We use CDs. Shows are typically 3-4 hours duration. The street fest gigs were all day long. We don't do 'em anymore.
Hope it helps.
Ken Petersen 09-19-2006, 06:42 AM I sit at events when I am eating at them.
I stand at events when I am drinking at them.*
* Lurkers, lookie-loos, and slam-gatherers: That was HUMOR.
:sqwink:
Carolyn 09-19-2006, 07:53 PM I always stand, very rarely sit. I know alot of older DJ's here that sit. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, do what you are comfortable with.
eklondon 09-19-2006, 10:20 PM You just reminded me of a great idea I once had but didn't like it but now do just because of the way you worded it.

Will you share?
Mr. K 09-19-2006, 10:45 PM Will you share?
Not yet...when I am ready...remind me if you don't hear from me in the next few days or so.
Balanced Line 09-21-2006, 04:39 AM Well it seems that it will require more to start a food fight here. In general, it seems the consensus is to stand when active but if you need to sit no bigge, sit.
Thanks to everyone that contributed their ever so moderate views.
Fred Stewart 09-21-2006, 04:58 AM If I recollect correctly this topic arose some years ago at Sid's site. Sure enough, the usual suspects (the renegades) proceeded to flame anyone who did things differently than they. After chasing everyone else away they proceeded to flame each other. :D
We have a decent crew here. Some of these guys take potshots at one another on occasion but it's all in good humor. :)

Sid who? What site?
djxpress 09-21-2006, 12:15 PM Even at 43 years young, I still stand most all of the time. On occasion when there is a long dinner line, I will lean back on a very tall bar stool that I have. But even with that, It almost looks like I'm standing. Darn that getting older...:tcry:

This is how I feel. I use a DJ topper of sorts. If I sit to much I can't see the dancers and they can't see me. But I'm 45 and also have Scoliosis. In my lower spine. If I stand to long the pain in my lower back really starts to get to me. So I try and follow the above comments. :sqbiggrin:My Arthritis allows for a moment or two on occasion to have a seat as well.
Mr. K 09-24-2006, 04:56 PM If I stand to long the pain in my lower back really starts to get to me.
Interesting.
I am the opposite...sort of...
Once I haul in all my stuff, the longer I stand/dance, the better it is for my back...to give it rest for the haul out.
Balanced Line 09-24-2006, 06:28 PM Standing good for the back Vinyl?
Let me steal Fred's term.
That's because you're still a pup. Give it another twenty years.
Mr. K 09-24-2006, 06:37 PM Standing good for the back Vinyl?
Let me steal Fred's term.

Standing still? No.
I have heard more reports of moving being better for the back than NOT moving.
Another thing that I have learned and tried and seen to work is, if you MUST stand, and it IS possible, then stand with one foot on something elevated, about as high as a step.
I am sure that this is not the same for everybody ALL of the time.
But I shall let you know in twenty years.
DJ Dan 09-24-2006, 08:06 PM From a medical standpoint, moving is in fact good for joints. Staying in any position for a long period of time leads to aches and pains.
Fred Stewart 09-24-2006, 11:14 PM There are extenuating circumstances as well. The type of shoes worn, the type of surface you're standing on etc.
I agree that walking about is better for the back than standing in place for hours.
DJ JohnThe1 09-24-2006, 11:56 PM I stand for all events. I spin CD's and the events are from 4-6 hours. I usually eat before my events or on the way home after. I will also have a drink or 2 if offered by the host of the event.
Kirby Ball 09-29-2006, 08:44 PM I try to stand and keep active/moving for the whole event.
One thing that I have found helpful, is that we bought some of those square rubber mats that lock together from Sam's. I usually make sure I have about 10 of them with me, that way I can use as many as I need to cover the floor area behind the table.
We also purchased some inexpensive folding bar stools from Osco's or Walgreen's and take those along for the moments that you just have to take a load off the feet for a few minutes.
DjDennis 10-03-2006, 01:27 PM Oh here we go again
- to sit or stand
- eat or dont eat
- to drink or not to dont drink
to have sex or dont have sex (lol)
what else will it be
to be gay or not to be gay (LOL)
djfatman 10-07-2006, 06:27 PM I don't sit, but I don't stand still, either. I'm pretty animated when I DJ.
DjDennis 10-11-2006, 10:20 AM oh by the way isnt there a sit/stand chair out there somewhere ?
I saw it on mobile beat mag a long time ago and was thinking of importing a few but never did
still dont know if they are still availkable as no one knows iof you are sitting or standing...

That device is no more! Peeps have been looking for the SitStand for years and to no avail.
P.S. To answer your poll questions:
to sit or stand - SIT
eat or dont eat - DON'T EAT
to drink or not to dont drink - DON'T DRINK (Alcoholic beverages)
to have sex or dont have sex - HAVE SEX (But not during the reception or mitzvah)
to be gay or not to be gay - NOT BE GAY (Seems like it would be a real pain in the Azz, literally & figuratively)
barry stamper 10-12-2006, 09:16 PM I stand and dance and sway, but I dont drink one is too many and 10 is not enough. And don't eat I'm not comfortable with that so I politely pass....
djrox 10-12-2006, 10:09 PM My reply should read
to sit or stand - DON'T SIT
eat or dont eat - DON'T EAT
to drink or not to dont drink - DON'T DRINK (Alcoholic beverages)
to have sex or dont have sex - HAVE SEX (But not during the reception or mitzvah)
to be gay or not to be gay - NOT BE GAY (Seems like it would be a real pain in the Azz, literally & figuratively)
I left a don't out
djxpress 10-13-2006, 02:22 AM Don't sit, eat, or drink(alcohol) at any events...period!
GoodKnightDJ 10-13-2006, 03:22 PM Auctioneer: Gentlemen! Please take your seats and the auction will commence.
Thank you.
Gentlemen, I am here tonight on behalf of Le Chiffre, of whom you will have heard, to auction this unique collection of art treasures.
Are there any specific bidding instructions?
Russians: When we sit, we are bidding. When we stand, we are not bidding.
Americans: We'll do our bidding sitting down. When we stand up, we're not bidding.
Chineese: We stand, we bid. We no stand, we no bid.
Auctioneer: And the British representatives?
British: Well, I don't know actually. A bit of both, I suppose, really.
- Is that all right with you chaps?
- That's fine.
Of course that was the sit or stand dialog from the 1967 version of Casino Royale.
Mr. K 10-13-2006, 04:27 PM And if a Greek offers you food and you decline, then you may as well run.
